Here's the latest injury news from across the NHL! If you're looking for information about a specific player and don't see their name in this article, there probably haven't been any significant updates about their progress since last week's article. If you ever need injury updates for a specific player, shoot me a message on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza.
Jakob Silfverberg – The 30-year-old forward will be sidelined for the next four to six months as he recovers from hip surgery. This should finally provide some long-term relief for an injury that's been bothering SIlfverberg for the past two years. He had just 16 points in 47 appearances this season, which translates to 28 points in a typical 82-game campaign. It seems that injuries hindered his production this year, so next season could feature a bounce-back performance as he returns to full health.
Antti Raanta – According to coach Rick Tocchet, Raanta woke up on Saturday and didn't feel great. He was subsequently labelled day-to-day with an upper-body injury that isn't believed to be very serious. The Coyotes netminder was reportedly feeling better on Monday, although his status remained day-to-day. As I write this, his availability for Wednesday's game against the Sharks is still up in the air.
Conor Garland – We haven't heard much since last Thursday's announcement that Garland was week-to-week with a lower-body injury. This season, Garland spent most of his minutes on a line with Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller – a line is now rounded out by Michael Bunting. Bunting has eight goals in 14 appearances this year and is still available in 97-percent of Yahoo leagues.
Linus Ullmark – The Sabres netminder remains week-to-week with a lower-body injury. There are less than two weeks left in Buffalo's regular season and Ullmark still hasn't started skating, so I wouldn't expect him to feature in the team's final six games.
Carter Hutton – The 35-year-old goaltender suffered a setback in his recovery from a leg injury. While the Sabres hope he'll return before the end of the season, that's becoming less and less likely with 11 days left in Buffalo's 2021 campaign.
Noah Hanifin – The Flames defenseman will miss the rest of the regular season as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
Petr Mrazek – Is dealing with a very minor lower-body injury and could play if the team really needed him. However, seeing as Carolina has already clinched a playoff spot and considering the outstanding goaltending Alex Nedeljkovic has provided this year, the Hurricanes can afford to give Mrazek extra time to return to full health. He has been practicing, so I wouldn't expect him to be sidelined for too much longer.
Adam Boqvist – Broke his wrist during Tuesday's game against the Lightning and will miss the rest of the regular season as a result. The 20-year-old defenseman has had a solid showing in his sophomore year, posting 15 points through 35 appearances.
Jonathan Toews – In late December, Toews announced that he was experiencing symptoms which left him feeling drained of all energy. He had been consulting doctors to better understand what he was dealing with. Last week, it was reported that his health is improving and the he's expected to be ready for the start of next season.
Brandon Saad – The Avalanche forward will miss the next two to four weeks as he recovers from a lower-body injury. He has 15 goals in 44 appearances this season, which is pretty impressive when you consider he's averaging just 14 minutes of ice time – a significant reduction from the 17 minutes he's averaged throughout most of his career.
Bowen Byram – Was close to returning from an upper-body injury when he joined the COVID-19 protocol list on April 9th. He was taken off the list on April 19th, but the team just announced that he suffered a setback – presumably related to that upper-body injury – and hasn't been skating recently. He's officially week-to-week and it doesn't sound like he'll be back any time soon. The Avalanche have 10 games left in their regular season, with the last one currently scheduled for May 13th.
Joonas Korpisalo – The Blue Jackets netminder will miss the rest of the regular season with a lower-body injury. The team's other goaltender Elvis Merzlikins has been solid this year and should feature in most – if not all – of Columbus' final five games. The team closes out their season with a back-to-back against the Red Wings, so check your waiver wire for Merzlikins if you're in need of a late spot start. He's currently available in 58-percent of Yahoo leagues.
Tyler Seguin – Has been skating consistently as he ramps up his rehab from offseason hip surgery. The team continues to monitor his progress after each skate, but they're ultimately relying on Seguin to let them know when he feels ready to play. Coach Rick Bowness has made it very clear that they won't be rushing Seguin into the lineup, but he's definitely getting close to a return.
Joel Kiviranta – Has been skating as he works his way back from a lower-body injury. When he returns will depend on when he's feeling well enough to play, so we don't really have a concrete timetable. On April 17th, coach Rick Bowness said that Kiviranta was "a long ways away" from returning.
Dylan Larkin – Detroit's captain will miss the rest of the regular season with an upper-body injury. It was a disappointing year for Larkin, who posted 23 points in 44 games – which translates to 43 points in a typical 82-game season. Keep him on your watch list during next year's fantasy drafts as I expect he'll be undervalued.
Robby Fabbri – Has been skating but hasn't been taking contact as he recovers from an upper-body injury. He's officially day-to-day – a label which he's held throughout this 12-game absence.
Tyler Bertuzzi – Was officially ruled out for the rest of the regular season due to an upper-body injury that may require surgery. He had been sidelined since January 30th, but the team kept holding onto the hope that he'd be able to return at some point this year. He had seven points in nine games prior to the injury and is someone to keep an eye on during next season's fantasy drafts.
Zack Kassian – Was placed on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury and won't be eligible to return for the rest of the regular season.
Jujhar Khaira – There haven't been many recent updates but last we heard, Khaira was cleared to skate without contact. He seems to be dealing with a head injury as he had some trouble finding his balance after a hit during last Monday's game against the Canadiens.
Patric Hornqvist – The Panthers forward is officially day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Chris Driedger – The 26-year-old netminder is officially day-to-day with a lower-body injury and won't be available for Florida's next two games against Chicago. Driedger has been excellent this season, posting a 13-6-3 record alongside a 2.17 GAA and .923 save percentage.
Carter Verhaeghe – Is expected to return from an upper-body injury during the team's final homestand of the season, which spans from May 3rd to 10th and includes three games. Verhaeghe has been excellent this year, posting 17 goals and 18 assists through 42 appearances.
Carey Price – On Saturday, it was reported that the Canadiens goaltender was in concussion protocol and receiving treatment but hadn't made much progress. Fortunately, more recent reports indicate that things are now moving in the right direction. Recovering from a concussion is an unpredictable process, so we can't really come up with a timeline for his return. As a Canadiens fan, I have full faith in Jake Allen who has provided solid goaltending for the team all season.
Brendan Gallagher – Has resumed skating and is no longer wearing a cast. While those represent encouraging steps in his recovery from a fractured thumb, the timeline hasn't changed. He's about three weeks into the original six-week timetable and won't be back before the end of the regular season.
Jonathan Drouin – Is on an indefinite leave of absence from the team for personal reasons. He was placed on long-term injured reserve and based on my understanding, that means he won't be eligible to return during the regular season. Whatever he's dealing with, all we can do is wish him the best and hope everything goes well.
Filip Forsberg – According to General Manager David Poile, Nashville doesn't expect any of their injured players to be back in the lineup until next week at the earliest. As a result, Forsberg won't be returning from an upper-body injury on Saturday against the Starts.
Mark Borowiecki – We haven't had many updates about his recovery from an upper-body injury. General Manager David Poile did say that the team isn't expecting any of their injured players to return until at least next week, so it doesn't sound like Borowiecki will be back in the lineup any time soon.
Jacob Trouba – Remains day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He's been progressing well but hasn't been practicing with the team. He's been a solid option in multicategory leagues this year, registering 84 blocks and 111 hits through 38 appearances.
Matt Murray – Is dealing with a lower-body injury but the team is hopeful he'll return before the end of the regular season. After Wednesday's game against Vancouver (which Murray won't be available for) the Senators have six games left in their 2021 campaign.
Shayne Gostisbehere – Will be sidelined for about a week with an MCL strain. He started slow with one point in his first seven games of the season but has rebounded with 15 points in his last 30 appearances.
Carter Hart – Has been skating recently as he works his way back from a mild knee sprain. The recovery process is taking a little longer than the team originally expected as Hart is still dealing with some discomfort. Considering the Flyers have fallen out of the playoff race, it makes sense to prioritize Hart's long-term health at this point and ensure he's feeling 100-percent before returning to the lineup.
Evgeni Malkin – Was cleared for full contact on Wednesday and participated in a full practice. This is a very encouraging step in his recovery from a lower-body injury.
Brandon Tanev – Has been skating recently, which is an encouraging step in his recovery from an upper-body injury. With that being said, it still doesn't sound like he'll be back before the end of the regular season.
Colton Parayko – The Blues defenseman will be a game-time decision ahead of Wednesday's clash with the Wild. He missed Monday's game with an upper-body injury but looked good during Tuesday's practice.
Vince Dunn – Is dealing with an upper-body injury and we aren't sure how long he'll be sidelined. He did not travel with the team to Minnesota, where the Blues will play a three-game series against the Wild. I assume that means Dunn will be out for at least the next three games, but we'll see what the team says in the coming days.
David Savard – Was held out of Tuesday's clash with Chicago due to precautionary reasons but is expected to play on Thursday against the Stars.
Frederik Andersen – Was on the ice for Monday's practice, which was his first since mid-March. He hopes to see some game action before the playoffs but will have to get up to speed as he's been sidelined for over a month with a 'knee-related' injury.
Elias Pettersson – It sounds like he's progressing well in his recovery from a wrist injury. However, with just a few weeks left in Vancouver's regular season, it seems unlikely that Pettersson will be healthy before the 2021 campaign comes to an end.
Tomas Nosek – The Golden Knights forward is sidelined with an injury that will keep him out for longer that your typical 'day-to-day' ailment. However, he's still expected to return before the end of the regular season.
Reilly Smith – Will be a game-time decision for Wednesday's clash with the Avalanche. He participated in the team's optional skate on Wednesday morning, which is certainly a promising sign.
Justin Schultz – The Capitals defenseman remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury. He's missed the last three games as a result of the injury but was on the ice for Wednesday's optional practice. His status for Thursday's game against the Penguins hasn't been determined yet.
Alex Ovechkin – The Capitals' captain is officially day-to-day with a lower-body injury. He's missed Washington's last two games and hasn't been skating recently. As I write this, Ovechkin's status for Thursday's game against the Penguins remains up in the air.
Nikolaj Ehlers – The Jets forward will miss the rest of the regular season with an upper-body injury, but the team hopes to have him back for the start of the playoffs. Ehlers sits second in team scoring with 46 points in 47 games and his absence certainly takes some power out of Winnipeg's offense.
Adam Lowry – Has been skating but hasn't been taking contact. Lowry may be dealing with a concussion after taking a hit to the head last Thursday against the Leafs. There's no real timetable for his return but he won't be available for Wednesday's game against the Oilers.
