Geek of the Week: Playoff Roundup

So rather than the traditional format of focusing on a single player and their journey to becoming a fantasy-relevant hockey player, I thought most readers are now heading into playoff territory and would be more helpful to cover multiple players who might still be available in your fantasy leagues. Finding value can be tough at this time of year, and a lot of this analysis comes down to matchups and potentially grabbing guys who can slide into the off-nights next week to maximize your starts. With that being said, let's get right into it!

Teuvo Teravainen (CAR) LW/RW

Coming off a lengthy stint on the injury reserve with lingering concussion-related health problems, Teravainen is finally back for the Hurricanes just in time for the playoffs. Coach Rod Brind’Amour wasted no time reacquainting him on the top line with teammates Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, and he has already put up points upon his return.

What's better is that the Hurricanes play four times next week, with two of those coming on off-nights. It's also worth mentioning that three of those games will be versus the Chicago Blackhawks who aren't exactly the best defensive team in the league. There should be plenty of opportunity for Teravainen to get in some offense for your team.

Additionally, he is dual-wing eligible, so even on the busy nights in the schedule you may be able to sneak him in as well.  He's still only 68 percent rostered in Yahoo leagues, so if you are lucky enough to snatch him up, he could be a difference maker for you in your playoff matchup.

Jesse Puljujarvi (EDM) RW

While Puljujarvi hasn't been blowing down anyone's doors this season expectation-wise, he has certainly shown flashes of the type of player Edmonton thought they might get when drafting him fourth overall back in 2016. Though he only has a mere 21 points in 47 games this campaign, he does have six points in his last 5 games. It also doesn't hurt being put on a line with Connor McDavid, which is exactly where he currently finds himself. While he will only get you on average about two shots per game, he also is good for a hit or two most nights too.

What I find super attractive about Puljujarvi is his matchups for next week. Four games, all versus Vancouver, with two of them being played on off-nights. The Canucks don't have much to play for at this point, and the Oilers could use a strong final push heading into the playoffs. I see this as a solid opportunity for Puljujarvi to produce some good secondary scoring for your teams in fantasy hockey. He currently is only owned in 22% of Yahoo leagues, so there's a good chance you could scoop him up heading into next week.

Jason Robertson (DAL) LW

In my opinion, one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated rookies in the NHL this season has to be Robertson. Though he played three contests last season, for all intents and purposes this is his rookie year and he has delivered huge for his team. In 45 games he has 40 points with 15 goals and 25 helpers. That's a 70-point pace in a normal 82 game season! He has found a home on the top line for Dallas with veteran Joe Pavelski and Roope Hintz, a line that has seemed to form a decent amount of chemistry. Robertson is shooting at a decent rate and will usually net you about two or three shots per game.

Going into next week, Dallas has four games. While they aren't the easiest matchups (Florida, Tampa Bay back-to-back, and Chicago) the final two are on off-nights. The Stars find them right on the playoff bubble right now, so hopefully they can play some high-end desperate hockey and Robertson can provide your fantasy team with some production. He is still only sitting at 65% owned in Yahoo fantasy leagues, so go out there and grab him if you still can!

Nazem Kadri (COL) C

At this point of his career, Kadri isn't a very flashy option either in real games or fantasy, but he is a veteran who does a job and does it well. At first glance, this certainly doesn't seem like a great pickup, and full disclosure, it may not be, but here's my case nonetheless. The Avs were in a bit of a rut entering the weekend. In mid-April the team was riding a four-game win streak and riding high. Then everything went to shambles. Scoring phenom Mikko Rantanen went down with an injury, and then not long after that the whole team was shut down for a week thanks to COVID. When they started back up, they were treated with three straight games versus the St. Louis Blues and then a contest against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Combining the return of Rantanen, two straight weekend wins against San Jose, and the Avs' schedule next week has me optimistic. Next week the Avs play four games, two versus the Sharks and then two against the Kings. One of the Kings games is played on an off-night too. I am hoping the return of Rantanen mixed with some easier opponents could provide a boost to Kadri's offensive production and get him out of his current funk (0 PTS in his last 11 GP). Aside from offense, he still is reliable for three shots a game most nights, and can get you some extra draws if your league tracks faceoffs as a category as well. Kadri is currently 61% owned in Yahoo leagues, so he could be there for the taking this weekend.

Justin Schultz (WSH) D

Finally, if you are looking for help on your blueline next week, perhaps Justin Schultz could provide some complimentary offense to your team. At this point it's pretty hard to find quality defensemen, but Schultz is only 24% owned in Yahoo leagues so he should be pretty widely available should you need a streamer defenseman. He's got three goals and 22 assists this season, and while 25 points isn't amazing, it certainly is serviceable.

I really like the matchups he has next week as the Capitals will play four games. The first two will be on the road against the New York Rangers, and the Caps will head home for a back-to-back Friday and Saturday versus the Flyers. The Friday game is an off-night too as an added bonus. Both these teams aren't great defensively, so Washington's potent offense could do some damage, and if you're lucky enough Schultz could factor into some of that.

It's also worth noting that the Caps top defender John Carlson has been out recently with a minor injury, so that could be something to track as well. If Carlson is out next week, this add becomes a much stronger one.

That's all for this week everyone. I know this is a bit different from the traditional format of this column, but I figured that this would be most helpful at playoff time, and that's what we are all about here at Dobber Hockey. Best of luck to everyone in their playoff matchups, and until next time, cheers!
