Ramblings: Kyrou unstoppable, Hall stepping up, Atkinson underrated value (Jan. 10)

It sounds weird to say, but Sidney Crosby is quietly having a tremendous season. Maybe it's just because we've come to expect such greatness from the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar that 22 points in his past 15 games doesn't make a ton of headlines. Crosby is actually on an 89-point pace this season if he played all 82 games.
Sometimes it feels like Crosby gets a tad overlooked as the fantasy hockey season approaches because his game maybe isn't as exciting as some of his younger counterparts like Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid and Nathan Mackinnon, but the 34-year-old remains just as productive as ever.

Don't sleep on skaters from the Arizona Coyotes right now, who are suddenly filling the net with regularity. The Coyotes have struggled to find any kind of offense for the most part this year, but over the past five games they have a whopping 25 goals. Clayton Keller has nine points and 35 shots in his past six games and Lawson Crouse has six points in his past four contests. Both players should be widely available in most leagues. It's doubtful this scoring run lasts forever, but take advantage of it with short-term streams while you can.

John Klingberg is starting to reward those that held onto him or those who bought low. The Dallas Stars defenseman has recorded seven points in his past six games, and similarly to teammate Roope Hintz, it just took him some time this season to get going. It's always challenging to know how long to hold onto a player that's struggling to start the year, but with someone that has the talent of a Klingberg, it's rare that you'll come out ahead by giving up on them.
The question now is will Klingberg finish the season in Dallas? Reports surfaced this week that he asked for a trade and where he ends up could significantly impact his value down the stretch.

It's been a rough go if you drafted Mitch Marner this year. After starting the season with just one point in his first seven games, Marner then missed almost all of December with an injury only to now find himself in Covid protocols after just two games back. A lot of this has simply been bad luck for the Toronto Maple Leafs forward, but that's little consolation to your fantasy team if you took him with a high draft pick.

Even the most studious of fantasy experts would be lying if they told you they saw this Brady Skjei offensive explosion coming. The Carolina Hurricanes defenseman is on a wild run of four goals in his past three games and eight points in his past five contests, already bettering last year's point total in only 33 games. Skjei's career numbers would indicate he's unlikely to keep this going, but at only 12% rostered, there are worse options for a stream if you need a defenseman.
Even if his points start slipping, you may be able to take advantage of his shots. Skjei is averaging almost four shots per game over his past five contests.

Someone who looks energized coming back from the pause is Taylor Hall. After recording only five points over a 13-game stretch before the break, the Boston Bruins forward now has six points in his last five outings. One good thing about Hall for the second half of the season is the Bruins have played the third fewest games so far, with only the Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders playing less. That bodes well if you have Hall and are in a league with volume categories like shots on goal.
Due to all the postponements, games played is going to be an important factor down the stretch, especially if you're in a roto league. For instance, the Islanders have played 10 fewer games right now than the Vegas Golden Knights, so keep things like this in mind when adding players to maximize their value.

It seems like there aren't many forwards on the Florida Panthers that aren't worth rostering these days. Anthony Duclair is one that's been very productive lately, scoring eight points in his past six games. What's most notable about Duclair is his ice-time, as it's steadily increased throughout the season. Duclair averaged just over 13 minutes a game in October and then that jumped to over 16 minutes in November and December. Now in four games in January he's pushing 17 minutes and it's paying off in production.

Flashy is one word you wouldn't use to describe Cam Atkinson, but he certainly is efficient. Even though the Philadelphia Flyers aren't having a great season this year, Atkinson is still providing tremendous value for those rostering him. Not only does he have six points in his past four games and is on pace for 60 on the year, but his shots on goal numbers are some of the best in the league. Atkinson ranks in the top-20 in the entire NHL in the category and registered an eye-popping 14 shots on goal over his past two contests.

Jordan Kyrou picked up two more points Sunday, giving him five goals and six assists in his past five games. He's now on pace for a ridiculous 92 points this season. With an ADP in the mid-13th round, Kyrou is likely going to end up as the steal of fantasy drafts for this year.
