Fantasy Take: Florida Adds Giroux to Deep Forward Attack

The Florida Panthers have acquired forwards Claude Giroux, Connor Bunnaman and German Rubtsov and a 2024 fifth-round draft selection from the Philadelphia Flyers for forward Owen Tippett, a conditional 2024 first-round selection and Florida’s 2023 third-round draft pick. The Flyers will also retain 50% of Giroux’s contract.

In their quest for the Stanley Cup, the Panthers have landed what might be the biggest prize of players on the trade block in Giroux. Although he might turn out to be a rental as a potential UFA this summer, Giroux was only willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to Florida. His scoring totals have been on a slow decline since his career 2017-18 season, when he cracked the 100-point mark for the only time in his career. He's still on pace for just under 60 points, so he will provide an already stacked Florida forward unit with yet another offensive option.

Based on his name value, Giroux will probably slot in somewhere on the top 6, but that's not a guarantee. He offers versatility because he can play either center or on the wing, which provides many different options for Andrew Brunette when constructing his forward lines. On the wing beside Aleksander Barkov? Centering Jonathan Huberdeau? How about beside Sam Reinhart and Anton Lundell on what might be the league's best third line? There's no poor spot for Giroux to be in this lineup, so the worst-case scenario should be that he retains his current value, even if his icetime takes a bit of a hit. It might only decline if he is moved around the lineup and can't stick anywhere, but it seems far more likely that his value will improve surrounded with the amount of talent on his new team.

Unfortunately, Tippett had been buried down the lineup in Florida, so this could be the fresh start that he needs. That being said, he hasn't been able to consistently produce at a top-6 level in the NHL even when given a shot beside Huberdeau. He's been scoring at over a point-per-game level in the AHL this season (18 PTS in 12 GP), and there are current openings on the Flyers roster, even in the top 6 with Giroux going the other way and Sean Couturier out for the season. The 10th overall pick in 2017, Tippett could be worth a speculative add in deep single-season leagues (1% rostered in Yahoo; 32% in Fantrax).

Rubtsov is a former first-round pick of the Flyers whose progress has been stalled. He has just six points in 37 AHL games this season.
