Geek of the Week: Riding the Hot Hand!

We've arrived at the end of another week, and you know what that means! It's time to comb through the waiver-wire and see what stands out. By this point of the season, a lot of the league’s "best-kept secrets" have been scooped up by this point, but there's still some value to be had. This week I am focusing on some players that are riding decent hot streaks, so in the short-term there could be some upside that normally you wouldn't expect. Let's see what we can find!

Kirby Dach

After somewhat of a pedestrian start with his new club in Montreal, Dach has been on an absolute tear as of late. With 11 points over his last seven games, he is finally showing off what Chicago Blackhawks fans were hoping to see from him during his time in the Windy City. It was a rough start to his career, especially after a nasty wrist injury at the World Juniors a couple years ago cost him a ton of NHL playing time. Even after a pretty forgettable season last year, I was shocked when the Blackhawks dealt him at the NHL Draft this past offseason.

Dach now finds himself surrounded with a lot of young budding stars much like himself, and the Canadiens are already showing signs that they could be dangerous sooner rather than later. Dach is currently penciled in literally the best scenario possible as of right now. He is playing on the top line with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, and if that wasn't enough, he is also getting top power-play time as well. Of his 14 points thus far, five have come on the man advantage.

To be an effective fantasy asset though, Dach will need to keep his offense going, because he doesn't provide much in the way of peripheral stats. It would probably benefit him to start putting more pucks on net, as his shot rate currently sits below two per game at an average of 1.6. In a fantasy league that counts shots, that's a less than ideal number. As long as he is playing alongside Suzuki and Caufield though, I like his potential offensive upside.

In Yahoo leagues Dach is owned in just a third of leagues at 33 percent, while over on Fantrax he will be tougher to snatch up as he is just over 60 percent owned. On both platforms his ownership has skyrocketed over the past few days, so if you have a spot for him you may want to move quickly. Dach has clearly found a bit of chemistry with the other elite young talent on the Habs, so as long as he is getting good deployment, he is worth taking a shot on.

Tomas Tatar

From a current Habs winger to a former one, Tatar is on a nice little streak of his own. This probably is thanks to the fact the New Jersey Devils are one of the hottest teams in the league as of right now. Tatar has three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 15 games so far this season. Nine of those points have come in his last seven contests. Much like Dach, Tatar has been the beneficiary of some line juggling and he finds himself on the wing of Nico Hischier, a player who has been red hot to start the season.

Saturday versus the Coyotes, Tatar played a season high in minutes, which resulted in a goal and an assist. If he can keep his average ice time north of 15 minutes a game, that should go a long way to making him a bit more of an appealing fantasy option. On the flipside of that though, he isn't seeing much meaningful power play deployment, so his special teams stats are non-existent at this point. And honestly, I think the best he could do is crack the second unit on the man advantage barring some sort of injury to one of New Jersey's top players.

While he is lacking in power play time, he does make up for it slightly in his peripherals. He is by no means going to blow you away with his extracurricular stats, but he will chip in about a hit per game and some blocked shots here and there. Also, comparatively to Dach, Tatar shoots at a better rate (2.2), so he at least contributes in other areas.

While Dach is a hot-hand with some long-term potential, Tatar is just a good streaming option if you need to find some additional stats and have to plug a hole on your roster. Tatar is pretty available in most leagues. On Yahoo he is just five percent owned, and on Fantrax he sits at 15 percent owned. I think as long as the Devils stay hot, Tatar could be a serviceable option, but don't go dropping anyone major to slide him into your lineup.

Phillip Danault

The Canadiens theme oddly continues for my third and final pick this week. Besides being the man who haunts my dreams for his masterclass job of shutting down the Leafs in the 2020-21 playoffs, he is also a very good NHL hockey player! The 29-year-old is in his second season with the LA Kings and looks to build off of what was his best offensive season last year. So far he has been decent, putting up five goals and seven assists for 12 points through 17 games. After starting the season off with goose eggs through his first three games. Danault hasn't gone more than two games without a point since.

Danault is heavily considered a defensive-first, shut-down type forward. He plays an excellent two-way game, but his offense continues to improve. He has become the fixture for the second-line center job and he is rock solid in that role. Currently his linemates consist of Viktor Arvidsson and Trevor Moore, which in my opinion isn't optimal, but he's been making due nicely this far. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing one or both of Kevin Fiala and Arthur Kaliyev make the jump to the second line to add some offensive punch.

Aside from his offense and stellar defensive play, Danault provides a lot of value in peripheral stats. He averages right around a hit per game and also chips in with shot blocks here and there. Last season saw him put 194 shots on goal which was by far a career best for him, but his shot rate has been down a touch this season. It's also worth noting Danault is above-average at taking faceoffs, so if you are in a faceoffs league, he is a formidable choice in that department as well.

Danault can be had in most leagues. Yahoo has him listed as 21 percent rostered, while Fantrax shows him being owned at 44 percent. As a nice added bonus, the Kings also play four games next week, so there should be some extra opportunities to sneak him into your lineup.

Well that's a wrap for this week. I urge everyone to keep an eye on players who are on major heaters. It can really pay off to capitalize on things like that both in roto and head-to-head leagues. Every extra bit of production matters so do your due diligence to give yourself every advantage possible! Until next week, have a great week and take care!
