Lining Up: Prime Positioning for Tatar, Milano, Ruzicka, and Bean

Welcome back to another edition of Lining Up. With injuries continuing to mount across the league and decimating particular teams, players who are widely available in most leagues now find themselves in prime positions to produce. Keep an eye on the line combinations here as they can change quickly from game to game.

Let's dive in.

Tomas Tatar – Fabian Zetterlund

Tomas Tatar has been the quintessential Lining Up candidate so far this season as he has played nearly 50% of his time so far with the red-hot Nico Hischier. More recently, this line combination along with Fabian Zetterlund are really clicking to the tune of nine points in seven games for Tatar and four points in four games for Zetterlund. The line has six goals for and only one against with a CF% of 66, dominating the competition. Tatar is currently on track to double his point output from last season and although his PDO is high, indicating he is currently lucky, his shooting percentage and secondary assist rate are actually within a normal range. This means that while Tatar likely cannot sustain his 105 point-pace from the last seven games, the regression when it comes will not be extremely severe and he should still to be considered worth rostering.

For his part, Zetterlund finds himself in a phenomenal position for a young forward, averaging 13:28 of TOI so far this season and taking nearly three shots per game. He comes with a high pedigree as a prospect, producing 52 points in 58 games in the AHL before debuting last season and making an early impression of eight points in 14 games. He is a shooter and has comparable upside to Viktor Arvidsson.

New Jersey is hot and will take a trip through the Atlantic division this week against Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. All are potentially high scoring games before playing four games next week. Tatar is still widely available in Yahoo leagues at only 17% rostered but if he happens to be taken or you are looking to stack, Zetterlund is rostered in 1% of leagues.

Sonny Milano

The former Anaheim forward took a somewhat surprising length of time before being signed by a team but based on his recent line combination, it looks as though it will pay off in the short term. Washington Capitals beat reporter Samantha Pell reported that Sonny Milano is currently lining up alongside Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov which is a significant upgrade to his previous linemates so far this season in Marcus Johansson and Dylan Strome.

Milano has four points in his past three games including a three-point effort on Friday night. Kuznetsov is on a hot streak right now with six points in four games, so it goes without saying that finding himself on the top line here is an excellent opportunity. If you have space on your roster this week, Washington plays on busy nights but still has three games remaining between today and Saturday.

Adam Ruzicka

As a brief mention and something to keep a close eye on unless you have space available on your roster, Adam Ruzicka has been lining up alongside Tyler Toffoli and Elias Lindholm. Even with Jonathan Huberdeau returning last night, Ruzicka still retained his spot. In the previous three games prior to last night, he was even moved to the top power-play unit and has so far averaged 15:29 of TOI which is a five-minute increase from his career high. He produced two points on Saturday night to show for it and another two points last night, giving him five points in four games.

He is flying far under the radar at only 1% rostered in Yahoo leagues and unfortunately, though not unexpectedly, lost his power-play spot to Huberdeau. However, playing on a line with two solid point contributors in Toffoli and Lindholm is worth taking a flier on while he is producing. Calgary has tough schedule this week in a Florida road trip, but they will play four games next week which may be the opportune time to scoop him up.

Jake Bean

Columbus's woes continue as the number of injured players are mounting. Currently on the list are Jakub Voracek, Nick Blankenburg, Adam Boqvist, Zach Werenski, and now Patrik Laine. Consequently, with three defensemen now missing time, the sole blue liner becomes Jake Bean who immediately slots into the top power-play role. In the two games he has played so far, he has averaged 78% of the available power-play time, including an extremely high 92% on Saturday night. He also saw 26 and 21 minutes of ice time in both of those games which is an increase of nearly nine whole minutes more than his season average so far. In that same Saturday game, Bean recorded two assists including one on the power play. Columbus may have the lowest power-play goal total in the league but that will regress with a star like Johnny Gaudreau on the squad and at least for the foreseeable future, Bean will be there to take part in that regression.

Columbus plays four games this week starting tonight, all at home. Regardless of the team's performance, Bean can still be a boon to your roster with the prime deployment and ideal schedule. At only 9% rostered in Yahoo leagues, add him for the extra man games and reap the rewards.
