Geek of the Week: Late-November Waiver-Wire Picks

Happy Sunday everyone! It's the end of another week which means it's time for us to go looking for a few more options to fill out your roster in the coming days, weeks, or even months if we're lucky! Hopefully our American readers had a good Thanksgiving this week. The US holiday definitely created for a bit of wacky week scheduling-wise in the NHL. We are right on the cusp of December now, so the likelihood of finding real game-changers for your team is pretty low at this point. But with that being said, it's still always going to be beneficial to ride guys who are on hot streaks or to use players who have a busy schedule coming up. Let's see what we can find.

Jordan Eberle

Man this makes me feel old! It feels like just yesterday when Eberle was Canada's most clutch player in multiple world junior tournaments, but 877 NHL games later, Eberle is a veteran player in his 13th NHL season. He's always been a serviceable NHL player, but never a superstar like many people, myself included, thought he would end up being when he was younger. While he hasn't been fantasy-viable for quite some time, he currently has been on quite the roll as of late.

Eberle finds himself stationed on the second line of the sophomore Seattle Kraken. The Kraken have proven to be a real pesky team to play against this season. So much so that they are sitting second place in the Pacific Division with at least one or two games in hand on all their opponents. The Kraken didn't quite have the storybook inaugural year that the Vegas Golden Knights had in their first year, but they often kept games pretty close and on most nights weren't an easy two points for the opposition. This year they are winning a lot of the close games they lost last season.

One major difference this season has been the presence of Matty Beniers, who is centering Eberle's line. The two have been paired together pretty frequently so far this season, and they are starting to find some decent chemistry together, especially as of late. In Eberle's last ten games, he's got nine points. Overall, on the year he's got six goals and ten assists for 16 points in 20 contests so far. He also finds himself on Kraken's top power play unit which has yielded him five points while on the man advantage.

Eberle is currently on pace to hit 66 points which would make for his best season in almost a decade. He hasn't gotten past the 60-point plateau since 2014-15, so it may be a lot to ask of the winger. He's managed to stay pretty healthy for most of his career, so it hasn't been a matter of injuries setting him back. He spent four seasons on Long Island where offense is normally pretty hard to come by, and followed that up by joining the Kraken for their franchise’s maiden voyage last year. Eberle could be a bit of a victim of circumstance I suppose.

Regardless though, what matters now is that he is having himself a nice resurgence and he could be worth adding, even just in the short-term while he is hot. You'll need him to keep burying points as he won't get you much in peripherals. He shoots enough to be fantasy viable, so no problem there. He's only owned in 10 percent of Yahoo leagues and 32 percent of Fantrax leagues, but he's seen a recent uptick in ownership on both platforms due to his strong play as of late. He's fairly available if you have a spot for him, but don't go forcing anything. Right wing is a relatively weaker position this season, so Eberle could be a solid depth add for a lot of people.

Erik Haula

Despite snapping their massive winning streak this past week to Toronto, the New Jersey Devils continue to impress as their record now sits at 18-4-0 which easily puts them at first in the Metro Division with a six-point cushion to play with. What's kind of scary in some ways is that the Devils have been red-hot, and only just recently has Jack Hughes started to find his scoring touch. If you were to tell me the Devils were one of the top teams in the league this season, I would have assumed Hughes would be top 10 in league scoring.

Haula finds himself alongside the aforementioned Hughes on the second line and I believe could be the beneficiary in this scenario. The 31-year-old Finnish forward is in his tenth NHL season and has shown flashes of being a dynamic threat, but has been hampered by injury throughout much of his career. He's been able to stay healthy through the first major portion of the season, but he's been a bit of an anomaly. He just finally got the monkey off his back this week when he buried his first goal of the year. Alongside his seven assists, he's still sitting at just eight points.

You can't sugarcoat it, that's definitely not an ideal start to your season. Part of what stands out to me though is that he is shooting at a career-best rate this season of 2.4 shots per game, which is great. However, his shooting percentage is just 1.8 percent through 22 games. I am a big believer in the law of averages, and at some point that number should balance out a bit. I am hoping that now that Hughes is regaining his form from last season, Haula can get hot now as well.

Outside of his scoring woes though, there are still some things to like about Haula. He's been getting a lot of faceoff opportunities so far on the second line and been quite well. On the season he has a win rate just under 59 percent which is fantastic. So if your league tracks faceoffs, he has some hidden value there, especially when he is left-wing eligible. Getting those draws from the wing position is a real game-changer so that's something to keep in mind. Additionally, he plays with a bit of an edge and is usually good for about a hit per game.

Haula's slow offensive start has obviously been a deterrent for a lot of fantasy players, so he is pretty widely available. On Yahoo he is 13 percent rostered while over on Fantrax he is sitting at just 16 percent. The Devils are hot, Jack Hughes is now hot, so if you have an open spot I think Haula could be a decent flier. He has shown a bit of offensive pedigree during his career, so it's entirely possible he could heat up soon.

Nick Schmaltz

Rounding out the list this week is Schmaltz, who is seeing a late start to his season after recovering from a rib injury. I should preface this by saying that the Coyotes only play two games this upcoming week, so this could be a situation you want to monitor and maybe jump on for the following week. Nonetheless, Schmaltz has gotten off to a great start so far with two goals and an assist through three contests thus far.

Schmaltz has shown he can put up numbers on the dreadful Coyotes. Last season he scored 23 goals and added 36 assists for 59 points in just 63 games. That's just shy of a point-per-game pace, and doing that in Arizona is pretty impressive. The Yotes aren't easing him back into the lineup either. He has been placed on the first line and on the top power-play unit immediately, so there certainly won't be issues with his deployment.

Schmaltz is a lot like Eberle, in the sense that you will need him to put up points to be an asset to your fantasy team. He won't get you a ton of outside peripheral stats, but I think the offense will be there for him. He gets a few bonus faceoff wins here and there and can be placed on the wing, just like Haula, so there is that, but even that is marginal. Schmaltz is still just 26 years of age and last year seemed to be the start of him breaking out into a big-time player.

In a perfect world he would get traded to a better team, but he's locked up another three seasons and is on a pretty club-friendly contract, so I don't see him going anywhere. Schmaltz is just 21 percent owned on Yahoo but over on Fantrax his ownership has already risen to 51 percent. As I mentioned off the top, this week isn't an ideal spot to add him as the Coyotes have a pretty quiet week ahead of them.  You could opt to wait another week, but he could be scooped up if your fellow fantasy players are savvy and paying attention.

That's a wrap for this week folks. Sorry for the lack of an article last week, as some things came up for me abruptly and I wasn't able to get the article out, but we should be back to a normal schedule now. For all my fellow Canadian readers out there, let's pray for a strong showing versus Croatia today in the World Cup!! Until next week, everyone stay safe out there and be well!
