Geek of the Week: Roster Upgrades for Mid-December

It's been seven days since the last column and there's been no shortage of intriguing hockey storylines and great NHL action during the past week. I was particularly intrigued by the Stars/Leafs game earlier in the week that pitted two of the hottest players in the league against each other. Mitch Marner and Jason Robertson had the two longest points streaks in the league. Marner extended his, but unfortunately for Stars' fans and Robertson's fantasy owners, he was held off the scoresheet. Since then, Marner has extended his streak to an incredible 22 games which is the most since Patrick Kane had a 25-game streak in 2015. Also, Tage Thompson continues to prove last season wasn't a flash in the pan. Monday night he put up five goals and an assist versus the Blue Jackets. Looking to next week and beyond though, here are a few players that could be worth scooping up!

Jack Quinn

Quinn is a key player of the young nucleus the Buffalo Sabres are currently constructing. The 21-year-old Canadian winger served a short two-game stint at the end of last season that was intended to get his feet wet, but this season he has suited up for the Sabres on a regular basis. After some early season line shuffling, it seems the Sabres are sticking with the line of Quinn, JJ Peterka, and Dylan Cozens to serve as their second line. It's a young line on a young team, but they have seemingly found some chemistry as of late.

The Sabres are a super fun team to watch. Are they a playoff team? No. Do they have flaws? Surely. But one they do extremely well is bury goals. In fact, the Sabres, who are currently 7th in the Atlantic, lead the entire NHL in goals scored with 109. And in fantasy hockey, that's a great sign. Quinn has been on a nice little point streak over the past couple weeks as well, with 11 points in his last 11 games. After a slow start, Quinn is up to six goals and ten assists for 16 points on the season.

The rookie will have to continue to evolve and learn on the fly, but for such a small sample size in his career thus far, I think he has a ton of potential going forward. For now though, I think you could tide him while he is hot. There's a few things to keep in mind though. If you're in a plus-minus league, be prepared for some pain. As much as the Sabres score, they also give up a ton of goals, hence their position in the standings. Also Quinn's shot rate is a little low, only averaging 1.4 per game so far this year.

One last thing to note is that Quinn finds himself on the second power-play unit, which admittingly isn't ideal, but he's actually made the most of his limited chances on the man advantage up to this point. He has six power play points so far, which isn't too shabby for a guy who will be a depth piece on your fantasy team. If you weren't able to land Tage Thompson in your draft, or you didn't snag Alex Tuch off waivers earlier this season, Quinn could be a great flier pick for now. He is only 23% rostered on Yahoo, while Fantrax lists him at 59%.

Brandon Hagel

In the last two weeks, this is my third Tampa Bay Lightning player I've covered. But here we are, and Hagel seems like a sneaky good recommendation right now. He's coming off of a breakthrough season last year that saw him put up 25 goals and 44 points in total.  Most of that damage was done while was playing lackluster minutes for the Chicago Blackhawks though. He was a trade deadline acquisition by the Lightning, and honestly it felt like the deal kind of missed the mark.

Nonetheless, Hagel is still under contract for the remainder of this year and all of next season as well. While he hasn't lit the lamp quite as much as he was last year, he is still having himself a formidable year. Through 27 games he has eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points. That puts him on pace to beat his personal best for points. It's also important to highlight his deployment. He's riding shotgun on the first line with Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov, so he's definitely in a fortunate scenario. He's getting nearly 19 minutes of ice time per game which is a huge uptick from his first two seasons.

His offensive potential and his first-line deployment was enough to pique my interest, but he also brings some sneaky value in some peripheral stats as well. He has 23 hits and 21 blocks so far this year, which for a forward are both pretty solid numbers. He shoots a pretty average rate of 1.9 shots per game.  The Lightning shuffle their special teams lines up a decent amount, but Hagel has gotten looks on the first power-play unit as well. On the season he has seen about 40% of the team's power play time, and with that he has managed five points on the man advantage.

The Lightning have really returned to form over the past few weeks and are starting to look like that powerhouse that they've been for the last handful of seasons. Hagel will continue to find himself in great scenarios to produce so I think he's an ideal candidate for a waiver-wire pickup if you have the space. On Yahoo he is 22% rostered, while on Fantrax he is owned in 55% of leagues.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau

It's that time again! Time for my yearly pumping of Pageau's tires!! This is my third year writing for DobberHockey, and every year I have covered Pageau at some point or another during the season. He ain't pretty. He ain't flashy. But he is so sneaky good at getting you value across the board in so many areas. Aside from that season where he randomly scored 26 goals, he isn't going to put up crazy offensive numbers. He will get hot once in a while, but mostly the points are sort of a bonus.

It's admittedly a hard sell to most people to go and pick up a center who doesn't score a ton. The position is just so deep. But depending on your league format and what stats you include, Pageau can provide a decent amount of value. Let's start with faceoffs. Over the past few seasons, Pageau has blossomed into one of the better players in between the dots. This season he is winning just over 56 percent of his draws, which is a great percentage. He's averaging around 10 faceoff wins a game, which is top tier.

Another area where he shines is physicality. He was naturally a great fit for the Islanders, especially when Barry Trotz was the coach. Pageau is a great two-way player, and he's very chippy. Last year saw him dish out a career high 171 hits, and this year he is on pace to crush that number by sizable margin. In 29 games he already has accumulated 81 hits, which is about 2.7 per game. That's an elite number for a forward. He also is known to block a decent amount of shots as well, though not quite at the same rate as his hits. Just know you can count on him for a blocked shot once every game or two.

Oddly enough, Pageau is actually getting reps on the team's top power-play unit, so he has actually gotten some offensive production on special teams. He also is a key part of the Islanders penalty kill too, so thanks to all his special teams play, he sees over 18 minutes per night on average. If you already have a lot of good scoring options on your team, but are looking to boost some of your peripherals, Pageau could be the guy for you.  He's only 22% rostered on Yahoo, and on Fantrax he is currently sitting at 38%.

Well, that's a wrap on another week. I look forward to doing it all again next Sunday. Until then, best of luck with your teams and stay safe out there!
