2022-12-19

At around this time of the NHL season, players and teams have played around 80 games in the calendar year of 2022. I've looked at the statistics for players for that period using Dobber's Frozen Tools and came away with some interesting takeaways below.

Points

Connor McDavid leads the NHL and the West with 133 points in 81 games, while surprisingly Matthew Tkachuk is second in the NHL with 117 points in 82 games. Next in the West is Kirill Kaprizov with 114 points in 82 games and then McDavid's teammate Leon Draisaitl with 113 points in 81 games, Mikko Rantanen at 100 points in 80 games and Jason Robertson 100 points in 83 games.

Some notable point totals are Clayton Keller with 69 points in his past 66 games, Samuel Girard with only 17 points in 65 games, Erik Karlsson 55 points in 57 games, Quinn Hughes 67 points in 70 games, Nick Schmaltz 64 points in 66 games and Josh Morrissey 62 points in 80 games.

Goals

Auston Matthews leads the NHL with 56 goals in 78 games, but is closely followed by Jason Robertson who has 54 in his last 83 games and Kaprizov has 54 in 82 games. McDavid is next with 53 in 81 games while Draisaitl has 52 in the same number of games.  From there we have to go all the way down to 43 goals for Rantanen and then 42 for Kyle Connor and Bo Horvat (in 67 GP).

Erik Brannstrom in Ottawa hasn't had a goal in 82 games which is ahead of Jack Johnson in Chicago who is goalless in 79 games and Robert Bortuzzo in St. Louis who hasn't scored in 67.

Some notable goal totals are Lawson Crouse with 25 goals in 64 games, Roope Hintz with 38 goals in 84 games, Elias Pettersson with 40 in 76 games and Ilya Mikheyev with 30 in his past 79 games.

Assists

McDavid shares the lead in the NHL with Artemi Panarin at 80 assists, in 81 games for McDavid and only 77 for Panarin.  Johnny Gaudreau is at 77 assists in 83 games while Matthew Tkachuk has 74 in 82 games, with most of those being in Calgary for both. Next in the West is Jonathan Huberdeau with 72 assists in 78 games and then Roman Josi with 71 assists in 79 games.

Power Play Goals

Leon Draisaitl leads the NHL with 24 PPGs, followed by Kaprizov at 22. Next in the West we have to go to 18 PPGs from McDavid and Horvat and then 17 for Timo Meier

Some notable players are Pierre-Luc Dubois who has 14 PPGs of his 29 goals, Joe Pavelski 12 of 26, Roman Josi 10 of 19, Arthur Kaliyev 10 of 17 and Brock Boeser who has 10 of his 18 goals while playing with the man advantage.

Power Play Points

McDavid leads the NHL with 54 PPPs, followed by Nikita Kucherov in Tampa Bay with 47. Next in the West is Draisaitl with 46, Kaprizov at 42 and Cale Makar at 40.

Quinn Hughes has 33 points on the PP, which is almost half of the 67 points he has. Tyson Barrie has 29 PPPs which is more than half of the 49 points he has.

The most points a player has without a power play point is Blake Coleman in Calgary with 38, followed by Adam Pelech of the NY Islanders with 35 points and Frank Vatrano in Anaheim with 34 points.

Plus/Minus

Leading the NHL in plus/minus is Matthew Tkachuk at plus 51 followed by Michael Bunting and Gustav Forsling at plus 45. Leading the West is Cale Makar at plus 44 followed by his teammate Devon Toews and Jared Spurgeon at plus 38.

The league worst plus/minus is Seth Jones in Chicago who is a minus 52 in his past 68 games. He is followed by Lucas Raymond in Detroit at minus 37 in 80 games, Patrick Kane at minus 34 in 82 games and John Klingberg in Anaheim who is minus 33 in 75 games.

Penalty Minutes

Gone are the days of penalty minutes in the 300 to 400 range. Nicolas Deslauriers who is now in Philadelphia leads with 133 PIM in 79 games. The top Western player is Luke Kunin with 124 in 81 games then Tanner Jeannot with 122 in 78 games. Next is Jeffrey Viel in San Jose with 111 PIM in only 33 games.

Shots on Goal

Auston Matthews leads the league with 370 SOG, followed by Timo Meier at 361 in 83 games, then MacKinnon with 353 in 71 games. Other members of the 300 club in the West are McDavid at 329, Kaprizov at 312, Roman Josi at 304 and Kyle Connor at 301.

The player with the highest shooting percentage (more than 50 GP) is Nick Ritchie of Arizona who has 18 goals in 54 games on 83 SOG (21.7 shooting %). He's followed by Ryan Johansen at 21.6, then Lawson Crouse and Bo Horvat at 21.4.

Hits

The league leader in hits is Luke Schenn in Vancouver with 339 in 79 games, followed by Jeannot in Nashville with 329 in 78 games. Jani Hakanpaa with 268 hits and Keegan Kolesar with 259 are the only other Western players close to the leaders.

The least physical player over this calendar year is Phil Kessel who has seven hits in 85 games (he was actually credited with a hit this weekend). He's followed by Quinn Hughes, Jordan Kyrou, Jack Hughes and Johnny Gaudreau who all have nine hits.

Blocked Shots

Jacob Trouba of the NY Rangers leads the NHL with 190 blocked shots in 82 games. The leader in the Western Conference is Jake McCabe in Chicago with 175 in 75 games, followed by Brayden McNabb in Vegas with 172 in 68 games, then Chris Tanev in Calgary who has 167 in 77 games. Alec Martinez would more than likely be on top as he has 158 blocked shots in only 48 games.

The player with the least amount of blocked shots for anyone over 40 GP, is Daniel Sprong who has six in 59 games.

Faceoff Wins

Patrice Bergeron leads the NHL with 1,054 faceoff wins, followed by Sidney Crosby at 947. The leader in the West is Elias Lindholm at 911, followed by Anze Kopitar at 869, Draisaitl at 860 and Ryan O'Reilly at 844.

The highest faceoff winning percentage (over 350 faceoffs) is Jonathan Toews at 61.5 percent followed by Patrice Bergeron at 61.1 and John Tavares at 60.5. The lowest winning percentage is Tage Thompson on Buffalo at 40.5 followed by Ryan Hartman on Minnesota at 43.8.

Time on Ice

Five of the top six in the NHL play in the Western Conference. Cale Makar leads with an average of 26:31, Drew Doughty at 26:21, Seth Jones at 25:52, Roman Josi at 25:52, Thomas Chabot in Ottawa at 25:30 and Quinn Hughes at 25:22.

The league leader in average power play time per game is Alex Ovechkin with 5:00 per game, which is well ahead of Nikita Kucherov who is next at 4:11. Leon Draisaitl is tops in the West at 4:02, just ahead of Rantanen at 4:01, McDavid at 3:56 and Cale Makar at 3:51.

The league leader in average short-handed time per game is Andrew Peeke in Columbus at 3:31 just ahead of teammate Vladislav Gavrikov at 3:26. Leading the West is Esa Lindell in Dallas at 3:12 followed by Chris Tanev and Mattias Ekholm at 3:07.

Points per 60

I was a little surprised to see Matthew Tkachuk at the top in this category at 4.6/60 with McDavid, Gaudreau and Kucherov just behind at 4.4. Other players above 4 are Kaprizov at 4.3, Tage Thompson, Steven Stamkos, Auston Matthews and David Pastrnak at 4.1. Right at 4 are Mitch Marner, Huberdeau and Artemi Panarin.

Expected Goals-For Percentage

I chose 40 for the minimum amount of games for this category. Patrice Bergeron led the NHL with a 69.4 xGF% in 78 games, followed by his teammate Brad Marchand who is at 65.4 in 71 games. They are in a league of their own in that category as we have to go all the way down to 58.8 to get the highest player in the Western Conference who is Nino Niederreiter in Nashville, followed by Jason Robertson on Dallas at 58.7

.

A surprising player who didn't quite qualify as he only played 32 games, but sits at 58.0 is Kevin Labanc of San Jose.

The lowest expected goals for is Patrick Nemeth of Arizona at 36.0 in 55 games. He's followed by his teammate Dyson Mayo who is at 36.2 in 55 games and Jakob Silfverberg in Anaheim who is at 36.8 in 56 games.
