Here's the latest injury news from across the NHL! If you're looking for information about a specific player and don't see their name in this article, there probably haven't been any significant updates about their progress since our last article. If you ever need injury updates for a specific player, shoot me a message on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza.
Trevor Zegras – The Ducks forward missed Tuesday's practice because of an illness. As I write this, his status for Wednesday's clash with the Oilers remains up in the air.
Jake DeBrusk – The Bruins forward is expected to be sidelined for four weeks while he recovers from injuries to his hand and lower body. DeBrusk has been benefitting from an increased role in Boston this year, racking up 30 points in 36 games while skating 17 minutes a night.
Frederik Andersen – There haven't been any significant updates on Andersen's injury status over the past week. As a reminder, on January 3rd, General Manager Don Waddell said the team hoped to have Andersen back in a week or so. It doesn't sound like that's changed, so Carolina's netminder should be back very soon. He's been sidelined with a lower-body injury for the past two months but has been practicing with the team consistently in recent weeks. It sounds like the Hurricanes will be rostering three goalies when Andersen returns. They risk losing Antti Raanta to waivers if they send him down to the AHL, and rookie Pyotr Kochetkov has been playing much too well to be sent down.
Alex Stalock – Didn't practice on Tuesday because of a non-COVID illness. His status for Thursday's clash with Colorado remains undetermined as I write this. Stalock has quietly posted strong numbers behind a lacklustre Blackhawks team, sporting a 2.54 GAA and .923 save percentage through 13 games.
Patrick Kane – Has missed Chicago's last two contests because of a lower-body injury. It sounds like he could have played in those games had they been more meaningful, but with Chicago out of the playoff race, it made more sense to rest and avoid reinjury. Reports indicate this is a nagging injury that's been bothering Kane for a long time. It's possible a more long-term solution like surgery may be on the table at some point – although that doesn't seem to be the plan right now. On Wednesday, Kane skated on his own but didn't practice. That suggests he won't be available for Thursday's game against Colorado.
Bowen Byram – After more than a month off the ice, Byram was skating by himself on Monday. He'll need to participate in a few full-contact practices with the team before returning, but this is an encouraging first step in the right direction. Byram has been sidelined with a lower-body injury since November 4th.
Valeri Nichushkin – Was supposed to travel with the team for last week's two-game road trip but ended up staying home to let his ankle heal. Coach Jared Bednar recently said the team won't be getting any injured players back soon, which suggests Nichushkin may be out for longer than originally expected. The Avalanche forward is reportedly dealing with the same ankle injury that caused him to miss time earlier in the year.
Josh Manson – Has been ramping up the intensity of his solo skates, which suggests he's getting closer to a return. Manson has been sidelined with alower-body injury since December 1st.
Joonas Korpisalo – Was unavailable for Tuesday's tilt with Tampa as his wife is/was due to give birth to their first child.
Boone Jenner – Has been skating recently but that doesn't mean a whole lot, considering he's working his way back from a thumb injury. On December 19th, we learned he'd miss four weeks while recovering from surgery to repair a fractured thumb. Based on that timetable, he could be back within the next week or so.
Roope Hintz – Is dealing with an upper-body injury, so he's not on the road with the Stars right now. That means Hintz won't be available for Thursday's game in New York. Although there's no concrete timetable for his return, coach Pete DeBoer doesn't think this will be a long-term issue for Hintz.
Evander Kane – According to General Manager Ken Holland, Kane is ahead of schedule in his recovery from wrist surgery. If all goes well, the Oilers forward could play the final two or three games before Edmonton's All-Star break, which begins on January 29th. If Kane isn't feeling well enough to play before the break, there's a good chance he returns for the first game after it – set for February 7th in Detroit.
Stuart Skinner – Has flown home to Edmonton to be with his wife as she gives birth to their first child. This means that Skinner won't be available for Wednesday's date with the Ducks or Friday's tilt with the Sharks.
Spencer Knight – Was recently placed on Injured Reserve, which requires him to miss at least a week of action. That means Knight won't be available for Thursday's game against Vegas or Saturday's game against Vancouver. He's still being evaluated, so there's no concrete timetable for his return.
Trevor Moore – Is officially week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
Arthur Kaliyev – Sustained a lower body injury after blocking a shot on December 20th against the Ducks. General Manager Rob Blake recently said Kaliyev is out week-to-week.
Jake Allen – Montreal's starting goaltender is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He holds a 3.52 GAA and .892 save percentage through 27 games this year.
Kaiden Guhle – The rookie defenseman will be sidelined for at least eight weeks because of a knee injury.
Nathan Bastian – Has been practicing recently and will travel with the team as they embark on a four-game road trip through the West Coast. He's working his way back from a shoulder injury that's kept him out since late November.
Mike Matheson – The Canadiens' defenseman has been skating recently and is expected to return from a lower-body injury in two weeks. He's been sidelined since December 17th.
Sean Monahan – Has been skating recently and should return from a lower-body injury in two weeks. Monahan has been out of the lineup for over a month now.
Oliver Wahlstrom – Hasn't been skating recently. On December 30th, we learned that Wahlstrom would be sidelined indefinitely because of a lower-body injury.
Adam Pelech – The Islanders' defenseman has been skating on his own recently. He's been sidelined with an 'upper-body injury' for the past month. It's believed Pelech is dealing with a head injury, which is always hard to put a timetable on.
Chris Kreider – The Rangers' forward is officially day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He wasn't on the ice for Wednesday's practice, which casts doubt on his status for Thursday's date with Dallas.
Sean Couturier – Continues to skate on his own, which suggests he's still on track for a return in late February/early March. Couturier is recovering from back revision surgery, which he had in late October.
Tristan Jarry – According to coach Mike Sullivan, although Jarry is day-to-day, his return isn't imminent. The Penguins netminder skated on Tuesday morning, for the first time since suffering a lower-body injury during last week's Winter Classic.
Kris Letang – Had been dealing with a lower-body injury but remains with his family as his father recently passed away.
Jeff Petry – Continues to skate on his own but there's no concrete timetable for his return from a wrist injury, which has kept him sidelined for a month now.
Auston Matthews – Won't play against the Predators on Wednesday because of a nagging injury. He's officially day-to-day but hasn't been ruled out of Thursday's game against the Red Wings just yet.
Thatcher Demko – Has been skating and progressing well, but won't play during Vancouver's upcoming road trip. That means he'll miss Thursday's game in Tampa, Saturday's game in Florida, and Sunday's game in Carolina. On December 3rd, we learned Demko would be sidelined for six weeks with a lower-body injury. That timetable will have run its course after this road trip, so he could be back in the lineup shortly after the Canucks return home.
Shea Theodore – There haven't been many updates on Shea Theodore since he was labelled week-to-week with a leg injury in mid-December. He hasn't been practicing recently, which suggests he won't be back any time soon.
John Carlson – It sounds like the Capitals defenseman will be sidelined for months, not weeks, as he recovers from taking a slap shot to the head on December 23rd.
