Happy Super Bowl Sunday everyone! As is the case most years on the day of the big game, we are treated to a busy matinee slate of hockey games since I'm sure Uncle Gary doesn't wanna compete with one of the biggest sports events of the year. Throw some hockey on during the day while you're getting your spread ready later! In the time being, though, let's take a look at a few players who might be available on the waiver wire that could help out your team!
Who could forget the big splash the Habs made when they went out and traded for Dach at the draft this past summer? While the Habs continue to rebuild and develop, Dach is showing positive signs that he can be a solid contributor and perhaps a decent fantasy asset. He's already broken out this season and achieved career-bests in all offensive categories. In 52 games he has 12 goals and 22 assists for 34 points.
Montreal has really given Dach a solid workload as well this season, especially as of late. On the season he's averaged just over 18 minutes per game, but lately he's been in the 21-to-22-minute range which really affords him all the opportunities to stuff the stat sheet. The results are there to back it up too. Over his past ten games he has 21 shots, 16 blocks and 14 hits. He is providing value in all areas which can make him very useful.
He’s also been a fixture on the Canadiens top power-play unit all season, and has thrived there, scoring 14 of his 34 points on the man advantage. Throw in the fact that he has dual-position eligibility on center and right wing, and that he chips in with a handful of faceoffs every game, he really can contribute across the board for your fantasy team. The Habs just came off their elongated break, so hopefully Dach can carry over his hot streak he had before the All-Star break. If you can get some decent sustainable offense to go alongside the peripherals he's been accruing, he could be a solid pickup.
Dach is available on Yahoo in 71% of leagues still, but over on Fantrax he is owned in 62% of leagues so he may be harder to acquire, it all depends on your league's format. I am close with some Habs fans, and they all seem encouraged about Dach's play as of late. Hopefully he can finish the season on a high note and next year he can really break out into a bonafide stud.
As most of you already know, Beauvillier was a major piece of the package that came back in the Bo Horvat trade last week. The Canucks management (finally) made a smart decision and sold high on Horvat who was having a career year. Vancouver clearly is in need of an overhaul, and Beauvillier is still just 25 years old and could still have a ton of untapped potential. He had previously been with the Islanders for six and a half seasons, but he was always in a middle-six role. On top of that, the Isles weren't exactly the most offensively-minded team, especially during Barry Trotz's tenure as head coach. This could be a fresh start for Beauvillier and early indications are that he's going to get some major opportunities to show what he's capable of.
He's already been featured on the team's top line alongside elite scorers Elias Pettersson and Andrei Kuzmenko. On top of that, he's also getting looks on the top power-play unit as well. If the Canucks decide to go with this set up the rest of the season, I believe it could yield some decent results for your fantasy team. The last two games he's already picked up two goals and an assist, both goals coming on the man advantage. Those ironically are the first two power-play points of the season for him!
Another upside of his is that he shoots the puck at a pretty solid rate. His 123 shots this season is an average of 2.3 per game, which is certainly respectable. He doesn't do a ton else in terms of peripherals, but he does have 45 hits, which isn't quite a hit per game, but it's close. You aren't really looking for Beauvillier to provide peripheral stats though. If you have a spot on your roster, you are taking a flier on him in hopes he can find an offensive spark in his game.
He's had a disappointing season up to the time he was traded, but I am excited to see what he can do in a new environment. The Canucks don't struggle to produce offense, that's definitely not their main issue, so it's not crazy to think Beauvillier can produce some solid numbers especially if he sticks in the top-six and plays on the top power-play unit. Beauvillier is rostered in just 6% of Yahoo leagues, while Fantrax shows him as 24% owned.
Alright, much like last week, I am going off the board with my last player again this week! The Blue Jackets have begun to infuse their roster with their next wave of up-and-comers this season with the likes of Marchenko and Kent Johnson. Marchenko joined Johnson in early December when he received his NHL call-up. He mostly has played on a line with Johnson and another young gun, Cole Sillinger. The three are all super exciting players with a ton of potential.
Through 30 games so far, Marchenko's statline makes him look like a finalist for the Cy Young award, but nonetheless, he's posted 14 goals and one assist (the assist coming on Saturday night!) 14 goals in 30 games is pretty impressive no matter how you chalk it up. It's important to note he is shooting at a 25% rate right now, and that's clearly unsustainable, but I think it's also unlikely for him to keep going without assists as well!
Of his 14 goals, six have come on the man advantage. He has found himself a home on the Blue Jackets' top power play line, which always has the opportunity to yield good results. As I mentioned before, up until now he had been playing middle-six minutes on the kid line with Sillinger and Johnson, but last night he was promoted to the top line and lined up with Johnny Gaudreau and Boone Jenner. It could just be a one-off, but if he could stick to that top line with Johnny Hockey, that could also be a great opportunity for the young Russian winger.
Marchenko won't bring much else to the table in terms of peripherals. He does have 21 hits through his 30 games, so that's something. He shoots just under two shots per game, a total which could be improved upon. To me the main selling point is his offense. The fact that he’s averaged under 14 minutes per game so far this season, and still has managed to score a heap full of goals is impressive to me. The minutes have been trending upwards as of late though, so if you are in need of some scoring on your squad, Marchenko could be worth the flier. He's only 1% rostered on Yahoo, but on Fantrax he is up to 35%.
That's all for this week everyone. Get your beers on ice, baste those wings, and bake your nachos, it's time for another Super Bowl! But most importantly, don't forget to sort your lineups out for the coming week! We are inching closer and closer to the nitty gritty. There's not a ton of time left in the fantasy hockey season, so be diligent! Best of luck out there, see you next week!
