Wild West: Update on Power Play Units per Team

Dobber's Frozen Tools has a new feature available to Patreon members that gives the ability to look at every team's last three games and see what the lines were at even strength, on the power play and shorthanded for that period.

I realize I don't write the Frozen Tools column any longer but I still use it on a daily basis and want to share some of the cool features that are being added to help us all in our hockey pools.

We're going to check in with each team in the West and see what players are on the first and second units of the power play. We will look at some of the injured players who might be due back soon and see how the players have done that have replaced them in the lineup.

Anaheim

Troy Terry has been out of the lineup for the past four games but should be back early this week. In his absence, Derek Grant has been elevated to the first line and seen time on the second unit of the power play. In the past three games, Grant has had three assists and has averaged just over 17 minutes per game.

The first unit of the power play has Adam Henrique, Ryan Strome, Trevor Zegras, Mason McTavish and Cam Fowler. When Terry is back it will be more than likely that Strome is dropped to the second unit.

The second unit had Jakob Silfverberg, Derek Grant, Frank Vatrano, Isac Lundestrom and either John Klingberg or Kevin Shattenkirk.

Arizona

The top six consisted of Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller, Barrett Hayton, Nick Bjugstad, Lawson Crouse and Matias Maccelli while Juuso Valimaki and Troy Stecher led the defense in ice time with the Coyotes holding Jakob Chychrun out of the lineup for trade reasons.

Bjugstad, Schmaltz, Keller and Hayton were all on the first unit of the power play with Valimaki as the quarterback. Valimaki had five assists in the past five games with three of those points on the PP.

The second unit had Lawson Crouse, Nick Ritchie, Matias Maccelli, Travis Boyd and J.J. Moser.

Arizona went two for six over the past three games.

Shayne Gostisbehere is out until early March with an injury and is more than likely to be traded before the deadline as well.

Calgary

The top unit of the power play over the past three games has been Nazem Kadri, Jonathan Huberdeau, Andrew Mangiapane, Jakob Pelletier and Noah Hanifin. Rasmus Andersson missed three games due to injury and played in the past two games while Elias Lindholm missed the last game due to the birth of his child.

The second unit had Mikael Backlund, Tyler Toffoli, Dillon Dube, Lindholm and either Hanifin or Andersson.

The Flames went two for nine over the past three games, so expect Andersson and Lindholm to be back with Pelletier and Hanifin replaced.

Chicago

The Blackhawks power play had gone zero for 13 over the past four games.

The top unit consisted of Patrick Kane, Tyler Johnson, Max Domi, Taylor Raddysh and Seth Jones. The team could replace Raddysh and Johnson with Andreas Athanasiou and Sam Lafferty or Philipp Kurashev if it continues to struggle.

The second unit had Athanasiou, Lafferty and Kurashev with Ian Mitchell and Caleb Jones.

Colorado

Cale Makar missed four consecutive games, returned for one and then missed the last Avalanche game on Sunday.

In his absence, Devon Toews has played the majority of the time on the first unit of the power play which has gone two for 11 in the past four games.

The rest of the first unit has been Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen.

The second unit had Evan Rodrigues, Alex Newhook, J.T. Compher, Samuel Girard and Bowen Byram.

Dallas

The Stars power play has gone cold over the past three games going zero for nine.

The first unit of the power play consisted of Joe Pavelski, Jamie Benn, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen.

The second unit had Tyler Seguin, Mason Marchment, Wyatt Johnston, Ryan Suter and Nils Lundkvist.

Edmonton

The Oilers power play continues to be near the top of the league as they went three for eight over the past three games.

Zach Hyman has secured his spot on the first unit along with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Tyson Barrie.

Waiting in the wings are Evander Kane, Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard. Warren Foegele and Ryan McLeod also saw limited time on the second unit.

Los Angeles

The King’s power play has been potent over the past three games going six for 11 with both units contributing.

The first unit consisted of Anze Kopitar, Kevin Fiala, Adrian Kempe, Gabriel Vilardi and Drew Doughty who had three of the goals.

The second unit consisted of Phillip Danault, Viktor Arvidsson, Trevor Moore, Arthur Kaliyev and Sean Durzi who had the other three goals.

Minnesota

Rookie Calen Addison who had been quarterbacking the first unit of the Wild power play has been scratched the past three games.

The Wild power play has gone three for 14 over the past four games.

Over the past three games the first unit of the power play has consisted of Mats Zuccarello, Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek, Matt Boldy and Alex Goligoski.

The second unit had Ryan Hartman, Frederick Gaudreau, Adam Beckman, Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin

Nashville

The Predators have gone three for 13 on the power play over the past four games.

The first unit consisted of Matt Duchene, Ryan Johansen, Nino Niederreiter, Mikael Granlund and Roman Josi.

The second unit had Cody Glass, Philip Tomasino, Tommy Novak, Juuso Parssinen and Mattias Ekholm.

San Jose

The Shark's issues over the past three games have been two-fold as they have not had a power play goal, but also have only had four opportunities.

The first unit was Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier, Alexander Barabanov and Erik Karlsson.

With Meier and Karlsson rumored to possibly be traded, Michael Eyssimont, Oskar Lindblom, Kevin Labanc, Matt Benning or Jacob MacDonald appear to be the next players on the list.

Seattle

The Kraken are still on a bit of a roll and have gone three for nine on the power play over the past three games.

The first unit had Oliver Bjorkstrand, Alex Wennberg, Jared McCann, Eeli Tolvanen and Vince Dunn. The second unit had about 45 percent of the power play time and consisted of Jordan Eberle, Jaden Schwartz, Yanni Gourde, Matty Beniers and Justin Schultz.

The Kraken have two pretty good units that they can put on the ice.

St. Louis

The Blues have traded Vladimir Tarasenko and Ryan O'Reilly who have both been fixtures on the first or second unit of the St. Louis power play over the past few seasons.

In the past four games, the Blues have gone two for 14 with the first unit consisting of Brayden Schenn, Ivan Barbashev, Jordan Kyrou, Robert Thomas and Torey Krug.

Pavel Buchnevich was injured on Saturday night against Colorado and missed the game on Sunday.

Vancouver

The Canucks power play has gone two for eight over the past three games and has consisted of J.T. Miller, Anthony Beauvillier, Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser drawing in over Andrei Kuzmenko.

The second unit had Conor Garland, Sheldon Dries, Vasily Podkolzin, Kuzmenko and Ethan Bear.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson was injured in the first period last week against the NY Rangers and missed the Canucks game on Saturday night.

Vegas

The Vegas power play has not scored in three games.

The first unit had Reilly Smith, Jonathan Marchessault, Jack Eichel, Nicolas Roy and Shea Theodore.

The second unit consisted of Phil Kessel, William Karlsson, Chandler Stephenson, William Carrier and Alex Pietrangelo.

Pietrangelo and Theodore switch back and forth throughout the season, but it's interesting to see Roy on the first unit right now as he has three points in his past four games.

Winnipeg

The Jets have struggled over the past three games and have one goal in 13 opportunities.

The first unit consisted of Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Kyle Connor and Josh Morrissey.

Once again Nikolaj Ehlers has been stuck on the second unit with Kevin Stenlund, Cole Perfetti, Nate Schmidt and Neal Pionk.

If the power play continues to struggle, it would make sense for Ehlers to move up even though he has just three assists in his past eight games.
