Fantasy Take: Gostisbehere to the Hurricanes

The Hurricanes bolstered the offensive skill on their blue line by adding Shayne Gostisbehere from the Coyotes for a 2026 third-round pick.

What the Hurricanes Get:

An offensive defenceman who has been revived this year by the Coyotes. Gostisbehere's value jumps because he suddenly has a lot more offensive talent to distribute the puck to, and he also should see his plus-minus rating get a huge boost. He's a powerplay specialist, and should fit in well on a team that runs two units and has Brent Burns running the other one.

What the Coyotes Get:

Another draft pick to stock their cupboards, more salary off their book, and maybe the ability now to take back a short-term contract or salary retention which should give them some more flexibility around the deadline.

This also subtracts one of the more skilled players from their roster, allowing for a better audition for incumbents like J.J. Moser who will eat up the offensive opportunities voided by Gostisbehere (and Jakob Chychrun when he is likely dealt too).

Additionally, the team gets a little worse on paper, which may hurt the goalies a tad – though not much because Gostisbehere's defensive skills are replaceable. This is what the Coyotes want though, as they now have a slightly better shot at the bottom of the standings.
