Top 10 Waiver-Wire Additions

Missed out on your league’s trade deadline? You’re not alone. Whether you were too busy with real life, or you just couldn’t make a deal, numerous people weren’t able to swing a deal.

It can be frustrating to not be able to make a move to improve your squad, especially if you are contending for a playoff spot. However, it’s not too late to make improvements to your squad. The waiver wire is still open, and there are plenty of great options available in many leagues.

Below are 10 players available in at least 50% of Yahoo leagues. I’ve tried to list names that would be available in shallow leagues, and some that would be available in deeper leagues, so you might find some help no matter how deep the league.

Before I start, I want to note T.J. Oshie as an honourable mention. Available in 68% of leagues, he’s picked up at least one point in each of his last five games. He has eight points in that span, including three with the man advantage. He has some tough matchups this week, but starting March 15, Washington plays the Sabres, Blues, Wild, Blue Jackets and Blackhawks. Four of those five teams are among the bottom 10 in goals against per game, so don’t be surprised if Oshie has some more great numbers at that point. He’s someone to keep in mind to snag a week from now.

10. Tyler Bertuzzi, available in 64% of Yahoo leagues

Bertuzzi had an awful start to the season, but has been much better since the start of February. In his last 13 games, Bertuzzi has 10 points with 21 PIM, 27 shots, three power-play points, 10 hits and six blocked shots. His first game with the Bruins was a success as he picked up an assist. However, he was on the third line and the second power-play unit, which is why he is ranked lower on this list.

9. Robby Fabbri, 87% availability

Fabbri was a popular pickup two weeks ago after he was put on the top power-play unit. He responded with seven points in four games, including six with the man advantage. He then went on a six-game pointless streak, but he was still productive in leagues that counted peripheral stats as he had 14 PIM and 15 hits in those six games. He now has two points in his last two games, but more important is that he continued to get the opportunity to produce during that pointless streak. It’s always a good sign when a player continues to get ice time and power-play minutes even through a cold snap.

8. Viktor Arvidsson, 76% availability

Arvidsson’s recent point totals may not be as high as some others on this list, but there are not many better options if you need a boost in the shots categories. In the past 10 games, he has five goals, eight points, 36 shots and four power-play points (despite playing on the second unit with the man advantage). Those 36 shots since February 13 were tied for the 13th highest heading into Sunday’s action. On the season, he’s only had two games where he failed to pick up a shot, but he’s had three games where has taken seven shots.

7. Ryan Hartman, 70% availability

Hartman had a serviceable fantasy season a year ago, thanks in large part to playing alongside Kirill Kaprizov, but an early-season injury this year helped lead to early struggles. His ice time is down significantly (almost three fewer minutes a night compared to a year ago), he’s shooting less and he has only one power-play point (he had eight a year ago). However, Hartman has started coming on the last few weeks. In the eight games since February 19, Hartman has seven points, plus-five, 25 shots, seven hits, 10 blocked shots and 41 faceoff wins. He’s up to 18:25 minutes per night over those eight games, a great sign going forward.

6. Jack Quinn, 93% availability

One of my strategies in one-year leagues is to not draft any rookies as they’ll be overvalued. However, keeping an eye on them during the regular season for hit streaks is a smart move. In his last nine games, Quinn has four goals and nine points to go along with a plus-four, seven PIM, 14 shots and nine hits. Normally, this wouldn’t be sustainable as he’s not getting any power-play time and just over 13 minutes a night overall. However, he is getting rewarded for his high production as he’s been moved to the top line with Tage Thompson over the last four games. If he can stick on that line, he should continue to pick up points.

5. Adam Boqvist, 91% availability

While the 22-year-old has battled injuries this year and Columbus is tanking hard, Boqvist has been excellent recently. Rolling into the New Year’s Eve game against Chicago, Boqvist had played only six games at that stage and had gone pointless. He picked up an assist in that game and has 17 points in 24 games since. If you want a more recent timeline, look at his production since February 10. Since that date, Boqvist has eight points in 11 games, with four of those coming with the man advantage. He’s the clear-cut number-one defenseman on a team where there are no challengers.

4. Mike Matheson, 68% availability

Matheson has been great since the all-star game. In those 12 games, he has 11 points, plus-eight, 31 shots, 17 hits, 22 blocked shots and two power-play points. He’s averaging 24:35 minutes per contest during that time and is on the top power-play unit. Matheson has been great all season, but has been limited to 30 games due to various injuries. He’s not in any danger of losing his prime spot, and even though Montreal is a team that will continue to struggle, Matheson should continue to produce.

3. Ivan Barbashev, 67% availability

We wrote about Barbashev last week in our column about players who could see a production boost if traded. Well, he’s definitely been productive in Vegas. In his four games with his new team, he has two goals, five points, plus-three, seven shots, 12 hits and seven blocked shots. Maybe most importantly, he is lining up on the top line alongside Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault at even strength. Expect him to stay in that spot until Mark Stone is ready to return to action, but there’s no word on how long that may be.

2. J.T. Compher, 55% availability

It always amazes me to see a player having a career year and being used in a top-six role still sitting on the waiver wire in the majority of leagues. But that’s where we are with Compher. In his last 10 games (not including Sunday night’s tile against Seattle), he’s averaged 20:42 a night while playing with Mikko Rantanen at even strength. The only downside is that he’s only on the second power-play unit. However, in those 10 games, Compher has 12 points, plus-six, 15 PIM, 23 shots, one power-play point, 19 blocked shots and 116 faceoff wins. All this might change once Gabriel Landeskog is back in the lineup, but until that happens, Compher should be an easy pickup.

1. Anthony Beauvillier, 83% availability

With the Islanders, Beauvillier was infamous for struggling at the start of the season and then coming on in the second half enough to convince some fantasy GMs to take a flyer on him in the next draft. Now we’re in the second half, but with a new team, and he continues to fly. He went pointless in his first two games as a Canuck, but since then, he has six goals and 11 points in 11 games to go along with 28 shots, three power-play points and 10 hits. He’s playing with Elias Pettersson and Andrei Kuzmenko at five-on-five and is also on the top power-play unit. He’s averaging almost 19 minutes a night with the Canucks, compared to fewer than 16 minutes per contest in New York. Keeping that top spot will go a long way to convincing fantasy general managers to draft him higher than expected again next season.
