DFS Saturday: Senator Stack

Stephen Dotzel

2023-03-11

After a very light slate on Friday that consisted of only two games, and a handful of Saturday slates over the past few weeks that have been a bit shorthanded for one reason or another – we have in store for us tonight one of the large Saturday slates we became accustomed to for much of the season. Tonight, that means 11 games. With so many options at our disposal, only a fraction of which I'll touch on in this article, it's a good time to give our tools at DFS Central a look to see who our formulas are liking for this slate to give you a few other choices for your lineups. As for me, here are a few spots I'll be targeting. All player prices are from DraftKings, but the information and concepts can be applied to any site.

Top-Tier Stack to Pay Up For

After a hot streak of five games in a row with at least five goals scored, the Senators burned all of the fantasy world this week when they got shut out against the Blackhawks on Monday. The team rebounded on Thursday against Seattle though returning to their high scoring ways with another five-goal performance. While the Canucks have been playing better as of late, I'm still willing to take my chances stacking against them in this one. I'm looking at the top line for Ottawa here of Brady Tkachuk ($7,500), Tim Stuetzle ($7,100), and Claude Giroux ($6,100). Excluding the aforementioned shutout, Stuetzle has scored at least 14 DraftKings points in four straight games and Giroux has done so in three of four. Tkachuk who rounds out that trio, has underperformed of late from a fantasy perspective but is typically one of the most reliable sources of points in the league, so a big-time performance is never far out of reach.

Mid-Tier Stack to Target

This stack is likely to be a bit off the beaten path but sometimes that's what you need in tournaments. The Blue Jackets have been a disappointment this season as they sit alone at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division. However, they do draw a home matchup tonight and their opponent, the St. Louis Blues, have lost eight of ten and have given up all hope of making the playoffs this season. With all that considered, give the Columbus top line of Johnny Gaudreau ($5,800), Boone Jenner ($6,200), and Kirill Marchenko ($4,300) a look. There's not many numbers to point too here outside of the matchup; however, this is a fully correlated line which means the trio skate together at both even strength and the power play. We also know the talent is there with a playmaker like Gaudreau on the wing. While the production has not been there as of late, when skaters are on the ice this often with each other there is a built-in upside that exists if they can combine for some magic on a given night. I wouldn't roll with this stack if only building one lineup but I think they're worth a sprinkle in some tournaments because I don't see them carrying much ownership at all.

Cheap Stack to Build Around

The Kings are winners of five straight and have worked their way into a tie for first place in the Pacific Division. Much of the credit for the recent winning streak can be attributed to the team's top line which is always among one of the cheapest top lines in the game. Over the five-game winning streak, Anze Kopitar ($5,800) and Adrian Kempe ($5,500) have combined for nine goals and four assists. Their linemate, Quinton Byfield ($3,100), hasn't shared the same production having failed to find the back of the net during this run; however, he has kicked in five helpers. Given his price of just $3,100, eight fantasy points is plenty and an assist and two shots is all that it takes to get there – something Byfield is certainly capable of. The Kings get a plus matchup in this one against a Predators team who had a fire sale at the trade deadline and are coming off losses to the Canucks and Coyotes this week. It will also be their fifth road game in a row, so I'd expect the Kings to take advantage and come away with the win in this one.

Goalies

Between the pipes I'm typically looking to stack my goalie with one of my stacks from that lineup. However, if looking for a standalone option, I'd consider Jake Oettinger ($7,800). Oettinger has failed to crack double-digit fantasy points in two straight games however prior to that he had an impressive run of doing so in seven of nine starts. Also, as recently as March 1, Oettinger was $8,500 on DraftKings so the fact tonight he is priced at $7,800 is a discount we can take advantage of and spend elsewhere with our lineups.

Don’t bet against Van when they have nothing to play for.
