Ramblings: Quick Work for Vegas, Devils Goaltending, Greenway, Zucker, and more (Mar 13)

Because of another commitment this evening, I'm posting this an hour or two later than I normally do. If you live in a time zone where the clocks move ahead one hour, then it's going to be like 2-3 hours behind the normal time. Hopefully better late than never, and hopefully your internal clock can handle the time change as well.

Although the Capitals made some changes to their roster at the trade deadline, they have decided to retain defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk, signing him to a three-year extension worth $3 million per season. Van Riemsdyk has recorded a career-high 19 points in 66 games, and he should be able to surpass his career high of 155 blocked shots soon. He currently leads the Capitals with 146 blocked shots, which is in the top 10 in the league. Just someone to keep in mind if you need to make up ground in the blocked shots category, as TvR is rostered in just 2% of Yahoo leagues and 9% of Fantrax leagues. As an added bonus, he's also been playing on Washington's second-unit power play.
Sorry, Leafs fans. Rasmus Sandin's fantasy value has skyrocketed since his trade to Washington. Sandin assisted on three goals on Saturday, giving him eight points over his four games as a Capital. Even though Sandin has been on the first-unit power play, only two of those eight points have been with the man advantage. That spot has been fantastic for John Carlson and then Erik Gustafsson when Carlson went down with an injury. It's not known when Carlson will return, but Sandin's value should take a hit once Carlson returns.
With a goal on Saturday, T.J. Oshie now has six goals in his last eight games.

Power-play specialist Alex Chiasson is back in the NHL, which is nice to see. After signing with the Red Wings a week ago, Chiasson has recorded three points in four games, including a power-play goal on Saturday. Not surprisingly, two of Chiasson's three points this season have been on the power play, and he was in front of the net again on the Wings' top power-play unit on Saturday. Even though Chiasson has never had a 40-point season in his decade-long career, he has posted double-digit power-play points in three of his previous four seasons. If you need power-play points specifically, he could fill that need in deeper leagues.
Just like the Flames/Ducks game last night, the Bruins/Red Wings game showed a disproportionate number of blocked shots. The Wings blocked 25 shots while the Bruins blocked just nine. Olli Maatta led all players on Saturday with seven blocked shots. Maatta doesn't block as many shots as Moritz Seider or Ben Chiarot, but he's now the third Wing to block 100 shots this season. This category is underrepresented even though many leagues now use it, so I will try to report it as much as I can.
Linus Ullmark overcame a rough start (two goals allowed in first five minutes) to post his eighth consecutive win. He has posted 12 consecutive quality starts, so you have to go all the way back to January 14 for the last time he did not post a quality start. As well, you have to go further back to November 1 for the last time he allowed more than three goals, which has happened only once this season. Start him regardless of the matchup and your other goalies.

Checking in on Mikael Granlund, he scored his first two points (goal and assist) as a Penguin on Saturday. He entered the game without a point in his first three games as a Penguin and last four games overall. He's about where we thought he would be as a middle-six forward with second-unit power-play time. His value could improve if he is moved onto a line with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin.
Fantasy Take: Granlund Traded to Penguins
Jason Zucker scored another goal, giving him eight goals in his past seven games. He's been benefitting from playing on the Malkin line, as no one has scored more goals than he has since February 26. The only downside is that Zucker doesn't have any assists over that span, but all the goals are fine. Finally without injury for a significant stretch, Zucker has reached double-digit goals for the first time since the 2019-20 season. His 23 goals this season is his best total since 2017-18, when he scored a career-high 33 for Minnesota. Ride the hot hand, although he'll undoubtedly cool off.
Rickard Rakell hasn't been scoring nearly as many goals as Zucker recently, but he ended a 10-game goal drought with a goal on Saturday.

Jordan Greenway is one of the top-searched players on Frozen Tools because he has been moved up to the Sabres' top line with Jeff Skinner and Tage Thompson. Greenway scored a goal in the Sabres' previous game on Thursday on that line, but he has otherwise had trouble finding the scoresheet this season (8 PTS in 49 GP). Perhaps he is worth a look in deeper leagues with the recent line deployment. The 6-6 Greenway is now 26 years of age, but he still may have development time remaining as a result of being a bigger player. However, he will need to make good on this golden opportunity presented to him; otherwise, he may not receive another one like it again.

Victor Hedman returned to the Bolts lineup on Saturday following a two-game absence, but Steven Stamkos left the game with what looked like a leg injury. Stamkos's status for today's (Sunday's) game against Winnipeg should be considered questionable, although Jon Cooper said he was held out as a precaution.
–
Even though Connor Hellebuyck allowed four goals on Saturday, he registered his first quality start in six games because he had to face 48 shots from the Panthers. The Jets have been in a tailspin, which has affected Hellebuyck's numbers. Since January 24, Hellebuyck has a 5-8-1 record with a 3.36 GAA and .904 SV%. Those numbers are average at best, which likely pulls him out of the Vezina Trophy race. But the win on Saturday is encouraging as he had to face a high volume of shots.
A Josh Morrissey injury would not be encouraging for the Jets. After leaving the game during the third period, Morrissey is considered doubtful for Sunday's game.

Dawson Mercer simply won't stop. Mercer assisted on Nico Hischier's goal on Saturday, extending his point streak to 12 games. Over that span, Mercer has 20 points, including 11 goals. He's been clicking with Hischier and Tomas Tatar during that time, as the three have been driving play with a 57.4 shot attempt for percentage. Over that same span, Hischier has 14 points (including seven goals) in 12 games, while Tatar has nine points in 12 games.
Akira Schmid has started each of the Devils' last two games, posting quality starts in both of them. He's allowed a combined three goals in those two games, including stopping 23 of 24 shots against the Habs on Saturday. Meanwhile, Vitek Vanecek has allowed at least four goals in each of his last three games and has not posted a quality start over his last five games (with three really bad starts over that span). Of course, Schmid's status depends on how long Mackenzie Blackwood is injured, but this could turn into a case of the minor league callup outplaying the starter for the time being. Schmid's numbers (1.91 GAA, .927 SV%) show that he is NHL-ready over 14 games. Vanecek should start the second of back-to-backs on Sunday, but expect Schmid to start at least one of the two games that the Devils play against Tampa Bay next week.

In the Leafs' 7-4 win over the Oilers, Mitch Marner scored a goal and added three assists with five shots, while John Tavares scored two goals along with an assist and four shots. Noel Acciari brought it in the bangers leagues, scoring twice along with a plus-2, seven shots, and five hits. The other guy in the Ryan O'Reilly trade, Acciari snapped a seven-game point drought and had only registered a single point in nine games as a Leaf prior to Saturday. In spite of the lack of scoring, Acciari has averaged 3.5 hits per game so far as a Leaf.

Jordan Kyrou posted a hat trick on Saturday, putting him close to the point-per-game mark (60 PTS in 62 GP). Kyrou has taken at least five shots in each of his last three games and four of his past five games, so he is really racking up the shots. His 220 shots on the season places him just outside the top 20 in that category.
With another assist on Saturday, Pavel Buchnevich has 14 points over his last eight games. He's well over the point-per-game mark (57 PTS in 50 GP), although he's missed a bunch of games this season because of injuries. I won't remove him from the Top 100 Roto Rankings for that reason. But hey, if you think he should be, or if you think there's another player that you'd move in or out of the rankings, let me know. I'll have the March rankings ready in a few days.

Jonathan Quick has wins in all three of his starts for the Golden Knights, including a 33-save shutout of the Hurricanes on Saturday. With Adin Hill out with a lower-body injury, the now-37-year-old Quick has a chance to go on a bit of a run. The Golden Knights have too many goaltending injuries to mention, which necessitated Quick's acquisition. He struggled mightily with the Kings this season, and the season was too important for them to hang onto their franchise icon until his contract runs out at the end of the season. What a storyline that would be if he were to face his old team in the playoffs, although one of Hill or Logan Thompson could be back from injury by then.

Without Thatcher Demko, the Canucks had serious goaltending problems. With Thatcher Demko back from injury, the Canucks are winning games. Demko has now posted three consecutive wins and four consecutive quality starts. Demko has not allowed more than two goals in each of those four starts. The more structured approach of new coach Rick Tocchet could be helping Demko's game. Expect more wins as well simply because the Canucks have a relatively easy schedule down the stretch and they tend to play well once the games don't matter anymore.
Andrei Kuzmenko already has 31 goals in his first NHL season, but don't call him a rookie because he's already 27. Over his last 11 games, Kuzmenko has 10 goals. Those worried that Tocchet's presence would hurt Kuzmenko's value shouldn't be. He's now a top-line fixture for the Canucks.

I didn't like the result of this play because I started Philipp Grubauer, but this is quite the pass. Also, if you're curious about Max Domi, he has three points in four games with the Stars.

I think Carlson will play in the next 7 to 10 days if not sooner.
I hope you’re right. I have a fantasy team that could sure use him.
