Wild West: Early Trade Returns

Grant Campbell

2023-03-13

We are going to check in with each team in the West and see how the new trade addition(s) to their roster are doing.

Anaheim Ducks

Brock McGinn was the only roster player who Anaheim added to their team. He has two more years remaining after this one at $2.75 million AAV.

After putting up just one assist in his last 27 games as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, McGinn had a goal in his second game as a Duck and has now played four games with one goal to show.

In the last Anaheim game he was on a line with Trevor Zegras and Ryan Strome at even-strength (ES), and did see some limited penalty killing time. He might be a consideration to add in deep fantasy leagues.

Going forward, the 29-year-old can be a useful third or fourth line winger for Anaheim, but probably makes too much for his production and current role in the NHL.

Arizona Coyotes

The Coyotes added three roster players in Jakub Voracek, Brett Ritchie and Connor Mackey and Michael Kesselring who played his first game in the NHL after 128 games in the AHL.

Voracek has one more year remaining on his contract at $8.25 million as a cap hit and $7.5 million in salary. The 33-year-old has managed just 11 games this season and is unlikely to play again as he is suffering from a concussion.

The 29-year-old Ritchie is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. In three games with the Coyotes he had two goals and two assists on eight shots. In the last game on Sunday night he had three points and played almost 19 minutes playing on a line with Clayton Keller and Barrett Hayton.

The 26-year-old Mackey will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season, and if he plays well down the stretch with Arizona, he might find himself a home for next season.

In five games, with the Coyotes he had two assists, with 16 hits while averaging just over 14 minutes per game. He has been an 8th or 9th defenseman in Calgary for the past three years, but could find himself as the 6th or 7th defender in Arizona next year.

Calgary Flames

The Flames added Nick Ritchie and Troy Stecher at the trade deadline. Both players are set to become UFAs at the end of this season.

In three games with the Flames he had one goal on six SOG and nine hits while averaging around 14 minutes per game. In Friday night's game he was on a line with Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau, but was a healthy scratch in the Flame's 5-1 win over Ottawa on Sunday night.

The 28-year-old Stecher should be a 6th or 7th defensemen on most NHL rosters. He has the ability to slot up into the top-four for a limited time as he showed earlier in his career with Vancouver. The impending UFA has played five games with the Flames and has one assist, is minus two, with three hits and one blocked shot while averaging just over 14 minutes per game.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks added four roster players in Nikita Zaitsev, Andreas Englund, Joey Anderson and Anders Bjork, who should all see some games to close out this season for Chicago to make some decisions on them for next year.

The 31-year-old Zaitsev has one more year remaining on his contract next season at $4.5 million. He has dressed for five games with Chicago so far with no points, a minus four, seven hits and 10 blocked shots while averaging about 16 minutes per game. It doesn't look like he will be anything more than a 6th or 7th defender with Chicago the rest of this season.

Englund will be a UFA at the end of this season, but it looks like Chicago will give him some ice time to see if there is anything there from the 27-year-old for next year. In five games with Chicago he had no points, was minus one, had 16 hits and five blocked shots while averaging just under 16 minutes per game. His ceiling is probably a 6th defender on a weaker team, but at league minimum he might be appealing for Chicago to retain for next year.

The 26-year-old Bjork is set to become an RFA next season, but it's unlikely that Chicago qualifies him as his current salary is $1.6 million. In five games with the Blackhawks he had three assists but Chicago could re-sign him for less rather than qualify if they like what they see.

The 24-year-old Anderson has been on the verge of the NHL for four seasons now and now that he is with Chicago, probably has his best chance to get a regular role. In eight games, he has one goal and one assist, a minus one, seven SOG, six hits and seven blocked shots while averaging just over 11 minutes per game. He is set to become an RFA next year and makes the league minimum.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche added some depth with Lars Eller and Jack Johnson being added by trade.

Both Eller and Johnson are rentals as both are impending UFAs next year.

The 36-year-old Johnson was a member of the Stanley Cup winning Avalanche last year, but did not play a game in the playoffs. He is pointless in seven games since being acquired, and is even in plus/minus, has 15 hits and five blocked shots while averaging just over 15 minutes per game.

Colorado doesn't have the depth they had last season, so Johnson could see some playoff action this time around.

The 33-year-old Eller won a Stanley Cup with Washington in 2017-18 and had 18 points in 24 playoff games that season. He has played 96 career playoff games with 15 goals and 34 assists.

In six games with Colorado so far, he is pointless on seven SOG, a minus two, and has five hits and two blocked shots while averaging just under 14 minutes per game. His linemates in his last game were Andrew Cogliano and Logan O'Connor.

Dallas Stars

The Stars added Evgenii Dadonov and Max Domi to their roster for their playoff run. Both players are impending UFAs.

The 34-year-old Dadonov has played seven games with the Stars and seems a little re-ignited with two goals and four assists on 15 SOG while averaging just over 14 minutes per game.

His linemates have been Jamie Benn and Wyatt Johnston, so there is an opportunity for Dadonov in Dallas the rest of this season in Dallas.

The 28-year-old Domi has played four games with the Stars and has a goal and two assists on 10 SOG while averaging just over 16 minutes per game. His linemates have been Ty Dellandrea and Mason Marchment.

Domi appears to have jump-started Marchment since joining the roster as he has three goals and three assists in those four games after going 32 games without scoring a goal.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers added Mattias Ekholm and Nick Bjugstad to their roster during the trade deadline.

Ekholm is 32-years-old and signed for three more seasons after this one at $6.25 million AAV with the Oilers responsible for $6 million per year. Ekholm has played six games for Edmonton and has a goal, two assists, plus seven, has 12 SOG, 10 hits, 10 blocked shots while averaging just under 21 minutes per game.

He has been paired with Evan Bouchard and in the six games since Ekholm came to Edmonton, Bouchard has one goal and five assists, a plus three, with two of the assists being on the power play.

Bjugstad is a 30-year-old impending UFA and has played four games since joining the Oilers. He has a goal and an assist on five SOG, with nine hits and three blocked shots while averaging just under 13 minutes per game.

His early linemates have been Warren Foegele and Mattias Janmark. Bjugstad will have a more limited role in Edmonton than he had in Arizona, but he provides some much needed depth as he can slide anywhere in the bottom-six.

Los Angeles Kings

The Kings added goalie, Joonas Korpisalo, defenseman, Vladislav Gavrikov and forward Zack MacEwen to their roster. Both Korpisalo and Gavrikov are set to become unrestricted while MacEwen is set to become an RFA.

The 28-year-old Korpisalo has had two starts with the Kings and won both games while posting quality starts in both. His GSAA in the two games was a combined 1.32. I could see the Kings re-signing Korpisalo before he becomes a UFA, but they can't make the same mistake they made with Cal Petersen.

The 27-year-old Gavrikov has played five games with the Kings and has a goal and an assist, with a plus five, six SOG, four hits, nine blocked shots while averaging just over 20 minutes per game.

He has been paired with Matt Roy and in the past five games, Roy has four assists, and is a plus five as well.

Gavrikov will be looking for more than $5 million AAV, but perhaps the Kings feel he is a good enough fit to warrant two defense first defenders (Mikey Anderson being the other) with that price tag on the back end. I don't think they will do it.

Zack MacEwen had seen an elevated role in Philadelphia this year where he was averaging about 12 minutes per game. It doesn't look like he will get that opportunity with the Kings as he has averaged just under eight minutes in the three games he has played there.

Minnesota Wild

The Wild added Marcus Johansson, Gustav Nyquist, Oskar Sundqvist and John Klingberg to their roster, which is a bit of a potential impact on an existing roster, both good or bad. All four players are impending UFAs.

The 32-year-old Johansson spent an injury-riddled year with the Wild in 2020-21 where he only played 36 games. In six games with the Wild since being re-acquired, he has a goal and two assists on 11 SOG while averaging 16-17 minutes per game.

He has been handed a fairly good opportunity as his linemates have been Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy.

33-year-old Nyquist hasn't played since January 25th, but it appears that he might be back in a week or two from an upper body injury he suffered while still with Columbus.

The 28-year-old Sundqvist has played four games for the Wild and has two assists on three SOG while averaging just over 14 minutes per game. His linemates have been Marcus Foligno and Frederick Gaudreau.

The 30-year-old Klingberg has the potential to make the most impact to this roster. In the 2019-20 playoffs while with Dallas he had 21 points in 26 games. In 59 career playoff games he has 35 points.

In his first five games with the Wild he had three assists and was plus five. His ice time was all over the place from 16:40 to 23:20, but he averaged about 19-20 minutes per game.

Calen Addison has been a healthy scratch in all of the past five games since John Klingberg was acquired.

Nashville Predators

The Predators added Cal Foote, Tyson Barrie and Rasmus Asplund to their roster this year.

The 31-year-old Barrie is signed for next season at $4.5 million, while the 24-year olds Foote and Asplund are both impending RFAs.

Barrie has a goal and an assist in his six games with Nashville but is minus two while putting up 13 SOG while averaging about 21 minutes per game. The Predators might be seeing if Barrie can manage an increased workload as he has been in the 18-19 minute range for the past two seasons in Edmonton, but did see 22-23 minutes per game while in Colorado a few years ago.

The rest of this season will more than likely be a trial for Foote to see if he fits in the plans of Nashville moving forward. In seven games since being in Nashville he has been a healthy scratch once and has no points, with eight SOG, four hits and eight blocked shots while averaging 13-14 minutes in the six games he has played.

Foote has been stuck in the 6th/7th slot during his past two years with Tampa Bay and the question remains to be seen if he can slot up in Nashville or not.

Rasmus Asplund had been a healthy scratch in Buffalo for much of this season after playing in 80 games last year with eight goals and 19 assists. In four games in Nashville since being acquired, he was pointless on six SOG and eight hits, while averaging just under nine minutes per game.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks added Andreas Johnsson and Fabbian Zetterlund to their roster at the trade deadline.

Johnsson is a 28-year-old impending UFA who was stuck in the AHL for most of this season because his salary cap hit was $4.2 million. He should get to play out the balance of this season in the NHL with the Sharks. In seven games with San Jose he has three assists on 13 SOG, is a minus three and has averaged just over 14 minutes per game.

His linemates have been Logan Couture and Alexander Barabanov so it would seem that this might be an audition to see if they might want to bring him back next season for a much cheaper salary.

The 23-year-old Zetterlund was a key piece for the Sharks to hopefully turn into a top-six forward. In the seven games he has played with the Sharks he is pointless, minus six, has 13 SOG and nine hits, while averaging just over 16 minutes per game.

His linemates have been Tomas Hertl and William Eklund. Even though Zetterlund has struggled so far, the Sharks should give him the balance of this season to find some chemistry.

St. Lous Blues

The Blues added Sammy Blais back to the roster in February and also added Jakub Vrana at the deadline.

The Blues must really like Sammy Blais as they re-acquired him from the NY Rangers and re-signed the impending UFA to a one-year deal for next season at $1 million. In 54 games as a NY Ranger he didn't score one goal.

Blais has played 15 games since coming back to St. Louis and has four goals, three assists, is a minus one, has 20 SOG, 63 hits and eight blocked shots while averaging just over 13 minutes per game.

Vrana has become a reclamation project. In his last 145 games before this season he had averaged between 0.72 and 0.75 points per game. This season he had to enter the player assistance program and was persona non grata from there out. The Blues added him for essentially nothing and Detroit retained half of his $5.2 million salary for this year and next.

In four games since joining the Blues he has two goals on 14 SOG while averaging about 14 minutes per game. He is unquestionably a talented forward, but time will tell if he can successfully deal with the issues he has off the ice.

Seattle Kraken

The Kraken only added defenseman Jaycob Megna well before the deadline. He has dressed just twice in the 17 games the Kraken have played since. He is an impending UFA who is just depth at this point.

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks added Anthony Beauvillier, Vitaly Kravtsov and Filip Hronek to their roster before and at the trade deadline.

The 25-year-old Beauvillier is signed for this year and next at $4.15 million AAV at which point he will be unrestricted.

In 16 games in Vancouver, he has six goals, seven assists, 39 SOG, 18 hits, while averaging over 18 minutes per game. He has been on a line with Elias Pettersson and Andrei Kuzmenko.

In comparison, Bo Horvat has played 16 games for the NY Islanders and has five goals, four assists, 46 SOG, 10 hits, won a lot of faceoffs and averaged over 21 minutes per game.

Kravtsov has played six games in Vancouver with one assist, nine SOG and five hits while averaging 10-11 minutes per game. He will need to earn a role in the top-six as it won't be handed to him.

His current linemates are Sheldon Dries and Vasily Podkolzin.

Filip Hronek is currently out week to week with an upper body injury and has yet to play with his new club.

Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas added Ivan Barbashev, Teddy Blueger and Jonathan Quick to the roster. All three are set to become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old Barbashev has played eight games with Vegas and had five poiints in his first four games but just one in the four games since. Overall he has two goals, four assists, is a plus three, has 16 SOG, 20 hits and seven blocked shots while averaging over 17 minutes per game.

His linemates have been Jonathan Marchessault and Jack Eichel, so he is getting a plum assignment early on.

The 28-year-old Blueger has played six games with his new team and has three assists and six SOG while averaging 13-14 minutes per game.

His linemates have been Phil Kessel and rookie Paul Cotter.

Jonathan Quick has started three games in six for the Golden Knights and has won all three games. Two of the three games were quality starts and one was a shutout. His cumulative GSAA for the three games was 3.32 after being negative 23 in his first 31 games this season in Los Angeles.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets added Nino Niederreiter and Vladislav Namestnikov to their roster. Namestnikov is an impending UFA while Niederreiter has one more year remaining at $4 million.

The 30-year-old Niederreiter has played seven games with the Jets and has three goals and three assists on 18 SOG, with 17 hits while averaging over 17 minutes per game and being on the first unit of the power play.

His linemates have been Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor which is a good opportunity for him to put up some ES points.

The 30-year-old Namestnikov has played five games with Winnipeg and has two goals and three assists on eight SOG while averaging just above 14 minutes per game.

His linemates have been Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers, so in the short-term, Namestnikov could be an attractive fantasy add.

After going through all the teams, there are some short-term fantasy opportunities for players like Dadonov and Domi in Dallas, Quick in Vegas, Brett Ritchie in Arizona, Johansson and Klingberg in Minnesota and Niederreiter and Namestnikov in Winnipeg.

Possibly there are some long-term ones like Zetterlund in San Jose, Vrana in St. Louis or Beauvillier in Vancouver. Thanks very much for reading and if you have any comments or suggestions, please leave them below or follow me on Twitter @gampbler15
