Top 10 Players You Can’t Trust for Fantasy Playoffs

Tom Collins

Depending on your league, there are two to three weeks left in your fantasy playoffs, but many of us have already experienced the hardships.

Last week saw disappointing performances from the likes of Kris Letang, Josh Morrissey, Evander Kane, Mark Scheifele and Chris Kreider, who all produced zero points last week. That’s frustrating but to be expected. Any random week during the season will see players put up goose eggs. It just sucks when it’s during fantasy playoffs.

However, for the players on this list, it’s not just a one-week thing. They have a much larger set of games to be concerned about. Some of them have been producing, but not that much.

Below are 10 players who are struggling and you can’t trust to produce points for the next couple of weeks. However, these guys are too to bench, which means you’ll feel forced to dress them. However, watching their games will be tough as you’ll have to restrain from throwing something at your television screen.

Note, this list is not the same as players having disappointing seasons. Jonathan Huberdeau is a great example. He has eight points in his last eight games, and 17 in his past 22. He’ll make any list about disappointing players, but based on his last quarter of the season, you can trust him to get at least a few points over the next couple of weeks.

The players on this list could all produce, but you also wouldn’t be surprised if they contributed nothing.

10. Torey Krug

Krug’s production hasn’t been the same since he left Boston as a free agent a few years back, but this year is his worst. He had 29 points in 53 games going into Sunday night’s contest against Los Angeles, while his minus-30 was tied for fourth-worst, only four behind teammate Jordan Kyrou for the lowest at -minus34. In his last 16 games, he has seven points, and his ice time is down to 16:47 per night, compared to 19:17 in his first 37 contests. There’s also his constant ability to find his way to the IR to worry about.

9. Bo Horvat

One of the unintentional themes of this week’s column is how much players are struggling on new teams. After an initial start of eight points in 11 games with the Islanders (which was off from his better-than-a-point-per-game pace with the Canucks this year), Horvat has slowed up immensely recently. In his last 11 games, he has two points, both power-play assists. He is also a minus-eight during that time. It would be easy to say the loss of Mathew Barzal is playing a large role in that decline, but Horvat only had four points in the seven games he played with Barzal. It was after the injury that Horvat has four points in four games before going on this miserable streak.

8. Connor Hellebuyck

At about the halfway point of the season, Hellebuyck was in the discussion as a Vezina finalist, with a little bit of talk about how he could be a longshot finalist for the Hart trophy as well, but that conversation has dried up recently. Fantasy GMs understand why. Since January 17, Hellebuyck is 10-13-1 with a 2.91 GAA and a .906 SV%. He hasn’t had a three-game winning streak in that time and has given up three goals or more in 13 of 24 games. He’s been better lately, but Winnipeg as a team has been struggling lately, which makes it harder for the netminder to pick up wins.

7. Seth Jarvis

Jarvis has been a big disappointment this year after being a popular breakout candidate last off-season. He started slow (seven points in his first 20 games), but started to turn it around in the middle portion of the season with 15 in his next 22. Now he’s regressed to the start of the season, with one point in his last 12 games. He played 12:24 in the game on Saturday, his fourth-lowest ice time of the season. He’s moved away from Sebastian Aho at even strength, which is never a good sign.

6. Patrick Kane

The newest Rangers haven’t been setting the fantasy world on fire. Vladimir Tarasenko has 14 points in 22 games despite getting top-six minutes. Kane has also been okay, but not great. He has eight points in 12 games, but just one in his last four. A look at his game logs shows he has three two-point games with the Rangers, meaning he has gone pointless in seven of his last 12 games. Many fantasy GMs held onto Kane through the tough times with the Blackhawks hoping he was going to explode with the Rangers, but his production has been worse with New York than with Chicago (0.67 points per game with the Rangers versus 0.83 with Chicago).

5. Aaron Ekblad

It’s been an overall frustrating season for Ekblad owners. Even with the loss of Jonathan Huberdeau and thinking Florida would score less than last year, you never imagined it could have been this bad. Ekblad is down to a 40-point pace this year, but it is his play over the last quarter of a season that has fantasy GMs fuming. Ekblad has zero points in his last five games, two in his last nine and three in his last 18. His ice time is down and he’s been taken off the top power-play unit in favour of Brandon Montour.

4. Timo Meier

Meier’s move to New Jersey has not gone the way anyone would have projected. Despite moving to a team that is in the top five in goals per game, playing on the top line with Jack Hughes and getting on the top power-play unit, Meier’s young tenure with the Devils has been underwhelming as he has six points in 12 12 games. The only saving grace is that he is still shooting and hitting plenty, but in any league where there’s an extra value on goals and points, he’s been a dud instead of the stud we were all hoping for.

3. Rasmus Dahlin

Early this season, Dahlin was almost keeping pace with Erik Karlsson as the top offensive defensemen in the league (Dahlin had 55 points as of February 1, second-most among defensemen; Karlsson had 66 points). Dahlin’s season still looks impressive overall, as he’s flirting with almost a point-per-game pace. However, his production has taken a hit over the past few weeks. In his last 11 games, he has zero goals, two points (both power-play assists) and is a minus-14. Maybe whatever caused him to miss some games at the end of February is still impacting his play.

2. Kyle Connor

His goal-scoring-per-game mark is the lowest since he played 20 games as a rookie in 2016-17. However, he’s struggled a lot in the past few games. His goal last Thursday has been the only time he’s bulged the twine in the past 13 games, and he has only two points (and only one power-play point) in his last eight. He hasn’t scored a power-play goal since February 16, a span of 19 games. He’s also a minus-21 in his last 20 games. He’s still a point-per-game player on the year and he’s averaging 3.6 shots per game (down from 4.0 a season ago), so he is having a great year. But this cold streak couldn’t have come at a worse time.

1. Andrei Vasilevskiy

Last year, Vasilevskiy was awful down the stretch and cost many fantasy general managers the championship. He looks like he’s on his way to repeating that feat this year. From March 3 to April 19 a year ago, Vas was 6-10-1 with a 3.00 GAA and .904 SV%. In 11 games since February 28 this year, the Lightning netminder is 3-6-2 with a 3.28 GAA and a .893 SV%. He’s allowed at least three goals in eight of those 11 games. You’re almost better off dressing any other netminder.
