Wild West: Who Should Lead Each Team in the West in Goals, Points, SOG and Hits

Grant Campbell

2023-09-11

I thought I would look at each team in the West and see what the ceiling was for fantasy for points, goals, shots on goal and hits. There are some teams who top out at 30 goals, 60 points, 200 SOG and 150 hits, while others 60 goals, 150 points, 350 SOG and 325 hits.

I'm also going to look at what player from each team should be at the top in each of those categories at the end of the year.

Anaheim Ducks

Points – 70 to 80

In 2022-23, Trevor Zegras (0.8 pts/g) beat out Troy Terry (0.87) by 65 points to 61, but Terry only played 70 games to Zegras's 81.

Once again this should be a two-horse race between Terry and Zegras but I think Zegras starts to expand his production a little and moves ahead of Terry to stay for a few years.

Goals – 25 to 30

This was a tight race in 2022-23 with Zegras and Terry getting 23 goals while Adam Henrique and Frank Vatrano potted 22 each. Alex Killorn had 27 goals with Tampa Bay and Mason McTavish had 17 as a rookie.

Terry had 37 goals in 2021-22 but did so shooting 19.3 percent on 192 SOG. He followed that up with 23 goals on 188 SOG which was a more sustainable 12.2 percent.

I think Terry will lead once again, but 35 goals might be beyond this team for 2023-24.

Shots on Goal – 225 to 250

Vatrano led the Ducks with 231 SOG in 2022-23 followed by Terry (188) and Zegras (184). Killorn had just 144 SOG in 82 games on his way to 27 goals and a 19.4 shooting percentage.

Hits – 275 to 325

The Ducks signed Radko Gudas who has had 300 hits or more three times in his career and has a career high of 355.

Arizona Coyotes

Points – 85 to 95

In 2022-23, Clayton Keller (1.05) had 86 points in 82 games, followed by Nick Schmaltz with 58 points in 63 games.

Logan Cooley will be in the mix in a few years, but Keller should lead this team once again.

Goals – 35 to 40

Keller led the Coyotes with 37 goals in 2022-23 while Jason Zucker had 27 goals with Pittsburgh. Lawson Crouse had 24 and Schmaltz had 22 goals in 63 games. This should be Keller once again.

Shots on Goal – 220 to 240

Keller led Arizona with 223 SOG in 82 games while Zucker had 197 in 78 games and Barrett Hayton had 178 in 82 games.

We should see Keller lead the team once again, but Hayton could be right up there as well.

Hits – 275 to 300

Jack McBain led the team with 304 hits in 82 games while Liam O'Brien had 203 hits in 56 games. O'Brien is not expected to be a regular in 2023-24. Zucker and Crouse should both be around 200 hits, but this should be McBain once again.

Calgary Flames

Points – 70 to 80

Offensive production was a disappointment in 2022-23 with just 64 points leading the team by Elias Lindholm in 80 games. After 110 points in 2021-22, Jonathan Huberdeau posted just 55 points while Nazem Kadri went from 87 points to 56.

I'd expect Huberdeau to bounce back and lead this team in 2023-24.

Goals – 25 to 35

Nazem Kadri led the Flames in 2022-23 with 24 goals followed by Lindholm at 22. In 2021-22, Lindholm had 42 goals and Andrew Mangiapane had 35.

Lindholm's shots per game dropped from 2.9 to 2.3 and his shooting percentage went from 17.9 to 11.8. I think Lindholm should be back above 30 goals once again.

Shots on Goal – 250 to 275

Kadri led the Flames with 267 SOG, closely followed by Mikael Backlund with 259. Unfortunately, Kadri had a shooting percentage of 9.0 and Backlund was at 7.3. They probably aren't the forwards you wish to have leading your team, so look for Lindholm to get back up to 2.9 shots per game.

Hits – 175 to 200

Mackenzie Weegar led the Flames with 186 hits and was followed by Nikita Zadorov at 174. Dillon Dube led the forwards with 136 hits in 82 games.

Weegar should lead the Flames once again.

Chicago Blackhawks

Points – 65 to 75

No current Blackhawk had more than 40 points in 2022-23 and that was Andreas Athanasiou while Seth Jones and Taylor Raddysh had 37 points and Taylor Hall had 36 points in 61 games with Boston.

Connor Bedard has entered the picture and should lead this team in scoring in 2023-24. Players exceeding 40 points in 2023-24 could include Athanasiou, Hall, Raddysh, Seth Jones, Lukas Reichel and perhaps Tyler Johnson.

Bedard should be good for 65 points.

Goals – 25 to 30

Athanasiou and Raddysh both had 20 goals in 2022-23 but once again this will more than likely be Bedard.

Shots on Goal – 200 to 225

The Blackhawks were led by Seth Jones at 178 SOG followed by Athanasiou at 175. We all know that Bedard likes to shoot the puck and conservatively I think he will shoot the puck 2.5 to 3.0 times per game for 200 or more.

Hits – 175 to 200

Perhaps the only category that Bedard won't lead the team in next season is hits. Reese Johnson led the Blackhawks with 178 hits in 57 games followed by Connor Murphy at 165 in 80 games. Nick Foligno had 147 hits in 60 games while with Boston and has had more than 200 twice in his career. I think this should be Murphy's category to lead.

Colorado Avalanche

Points – 105 to 115

Nathan MacKinnon led the Avalanche with 111 points and surprisingly it was the first time in his 10 years in the league that he had more than 100. He was followed closely by Mikko Rantanen who had 105 points.

If MacKinnon plays 70 games or more, he should easily lead the team in scoring.

Goals – 45 to 50

Rantanen led Colorado with a breakout 55 goals while MacKinnon put up a career high of 42 goals. Either one of these two is quite capable of getting 45 goals or more.

Shots on Goal – 350 to 375

MacKinnon led the team with 366 SOG and was at 5.2 per game. He's a volume shooter who has never had a shooting percentage above 13.7 and has a career average at 10.3.

Rantanen had 306 SOG for 3.7 per game with an 18.0 shooting percentage. His career shooting percentage is 16.2.

Hits – 175 to 200

Colorado is not an overly physical team and didn't have anyone over 150 hits in 2022-23. Ross Colton was added from Tampa Bay and had 188 hits in 81 games and could lead the Avalanche in 2023-24.

Dallas Stars

Points – 95 to 105

Jason Robertson had 109 points (1.33) in 82 games and was a level above teammates Roope Hintz (1.03), Jamie Benn (0.95) and Joe Pavelski (0.94). Robertson should lead the Stars once again in scoring.

Goals – 40 to 50

This should be a two-man race between Robertson who had 46 goals with a shooting percentage of 14.7 and Roope Hintz had 37 goals with a shooting percentage of 20.1.

Robertson shoots (3.8/g) a little more than Hintz (2.5/g) and has a more sustainable percentage. Robertson could break 50 goals while I believe that Hintz is at his ceiling with 37.

Shots on Goal – 300 to 325

Robertson led the team with 313 SOG with the nearest teammate having 206 (Miro Heiskanen). This should be Robertson easily once again.

Hits – 200 to 225

Jani Hakanpaa was the only member of the Stars in 2022-23 to have more than 125 hits and led the team with 224. He should lead once again.

Edmonton Oilers

Points – 145 to 155 points

I don't want to be the one who states that Connor McDavid (1.87) has hit his ceiling so I've accounted for a few points above the 153 that he put up in 2022-23.

Leon Draisaitl (1.6) had 128 points in 80 games but probably won't come within 20 points of McDavid next year.

Goals – 60 to 70

McDavid led the Oilers and the NHL with 64 goals after a prior career high of 44. Draisaitl has scored 50 goals or more three times in his career with a career high of 55.

I think McDavid figured it out last year and will duplicate 60 again.

Shots on Goal – 340 to 360

McDavid finished with 351 shots on goal (4.3) and a shooting percentage of 18.2. He was followed by Zach Hyman (3.5) at 276 and Draisaitl (3.1) at 247.

Hits – 150 to 175

Darnell Nurse led the team with 146 hits followed by Cody Ceci at 139. Evander Kane had 124 hits in 41 games and if he plays 70 games he should be good for 150 hits. His career high is 173 which he has reached three different times.

Los Angeles Kings

Points – 75 to 85

Anze Kopitar (0.90) ended up leading the Kings in scoring with 74 points in 2022-23 followed by Kevin Fiala (1.04) who had 72 points in 69 games.

This should be Fiala's title to take in 2023-24.

Goals – 35 to 45

The Kings were led by Adrian Kempe who had 41 goals. He was followed by Kopitar with 28, Pierre-Luc Dubois with 27 (in Winnipeg), Viktor Arvidsson with 26 and Fiala with 23.

Kempe should be able to repeat as his shooting percentage was 16.4 and he averaged 3.0 shots per game.

Shots on goal – 225 to 250

Kempe led the team with 250 SOG, followed by Arvidsson at 228, Fiala at 208 and Dubois at 205. With this many shooters in the top six, any one of these four could lead the team at the end of the year.

Hits – 150 to 175

Mikey Anderson led the Kings with 162 hits in 77 games, followed by Trevor Lewis with 158 in 82 games and Carl Grundstrom with 144 in 57 games.

I think Anderson will continue to grow his game and I don't think he has hit his ceiling for hits and blocked shots.

Minnesota Wild

Points – 90 to 100

Only Kirill Kaprizov is capable of breaking 100 points in 2023-24 as he had 108 in 2021-22. Even if he gets back to 90 points after 'just' 75 points in 67 games he will have done well.

📢 advertisement:

Goals – 45 to 50

Kaprizov had 40 goals in 67 games in 2022-23 and 47 in 81 games in 2021-22. He is quite capable of exceeding 50. Matt Boldy had 31 goals and was the next highest on the Wild.

Shots on Goal – 250 to 275

This was a tight race for the Wild with Kaprizov leading the team with 267 SOG (3.9/g), followed by Matt Boldy at 255 (3.1) and Joel Eriksson Ek with 247 (3.2). Kaprizov will need to dominate this category to break 50 goals.

Hits – 225 to 250

Marcus Foligno sets the tone as he had 237 hits last year and the addition of Pat Maroon should help as he had 172 hits in 2022-23 while with Tampa Bay. Brandon Duhaime could surprise as he had 146 hits in 51 games last year.

Nashville Predators

Points – 55 to 65

Roman Josi dropped from 96 points in 2021-22 to 59 last year (0.88) but still led the Predators in scoring ahead of Tyson Barrie who finished with 55 points after coming over from Edmonton.

If Filip Forsberg (0.84) can play 70 games I have to think he might outscore Josi in 2023-24 but I believe it will come down between those two.

Goals – 25 to 30

Matt Duchene led the Predators with 22 goals in 2022-23 with no one else breaking 20 goals. Duchene is now in Dallas, so Nashville will look for Forsberg to get back to 40 goals (42 in 2021-22) or hope that a young player like Luke Evangelista emerges.

If Forsberg plays 70 games I think he will get 30 goals.

Shots on Goal – 250 to 275

Other than Josi with his 269 SOG in 67 games no other Predator had more than 168 SOG in 2022-23. Forsberg had 157 SOG in 50 games (3.1/g) and should be above 200 moving forward. Evangelista had 54 SOG in just 24 games (2.3/g) and could surprise here.

Hits – 275 to 300

The Predators are a physical team and have added Luke Schenn who led the NHL with 318 hits in 2022-23 while with Vancouver and Toronto. Nashville was led by Jeremy Lauzon who had 250 hits in 67 games followed by Cole Smith with 198 hits in 69 games, Yakov Trenin with 167 hits in 77 games and Colton Sissons with 164 hits in 82 games.

This title should go to Schenn as Lauzon will struggle to stay a regular in this lineup.

San Jose Sharks

Points – 60 to 65 points

With Erik Karlsson and his 101 points being traded to Pittsburgh, the Sharks will go from having a one hundred point player to a scoring leader who will more than likely peak at 65 points.

Logan Couture had 67 points in 82 games (0.82) and Tomas Hertl had 63 points in 79 games (0.80) last year. Conventional wisdom would suggest that it should come down to Couture or Hertl, but this team is at bottom and could open up an opportunity for someone else.

Goals – 25 to 30

Couture led the Sharks with 27 goals, followed by Karlsson at 25 and Hertl at 22. Much like the points above, perhaps a player like Danil Gushchin or William Eklund emerge as a shooter.

Shots on Goal – 175 to 200

Couture had 198 SOG in 82 games (2.4/g) which is not the typical volume of a skater to lead his team. He was followed by Hertl with 184 SOG in 79 games (2.3/g). Some other shooters on the roster are Mike Hoffman (2.2/g), Anthony Duclair (2.2/g), Eklund (2.3/g) and Gushchin (4.0/g in just two games).

Hits – 150 to 175

The Sharks added Kyle Burroughs who had 165 hits in just 48 games while with Vancouver last year. Other than Burroughs, some physicality might come from Luke Kunin (63 hits in 31 games), Givani Smith (67/36) or Radim Simek (89/44).

If Burroughs can play 70 games he should have 200 hits in 2023-24.

Seattle Kraken

Points – 65 to 75 points

Jared McCann led the Kraken in scoring with 70 points in 79 games (0.89) and was followed by Vince Dunn with 64 points in 81 games (0.79), Jordan Eberle with 63 points in 82 games (0.77) and Matty Beniers with 57 points in 80 points (0.71).

It might be difficult for McCann, Dunn and Eberle to duplicate their output, but Beniers could be on the rise if he can avoid the sophomore slump.

Goals – 30 to 35 goals

McCann led Seattle with 40 goals on a 19.0 shooting percentage and was followed by Beniers who had 24 goals on a 16.2 shooting percentage.

Other 20 goal scorers were Jaden Schwartz (21), Eberle (20) and Oliver Bjorkstrand (20). Eeli Tolvanen had 18 goals in just 61 games so he might be someone to keep an eye on.

I think McCann will have a hard time duplicating his 40 goals, but should exceed 30.

Shots on Goal – 200 to 225

McCann led the team with 210 SOG in 79 games (2.7/g) followed by Bjorkstrand with 198 SOG in 81 games (2.4/g). As it stands, McCann is the designated shooter on the power play.

Hits – 200 to 225

The Kraken were led by Adam Larsson with 222 hits followed by Will Borgen at 203. Brandon Tanev was able to play all 82 games and ended up with 190 hits. The top three should remain the same.

St. Louis Blues

Points – 70 to 80

Jordan Kyrou led the Blues with 73 points in 79 games (0.92) followed by Pavel Buchnevich with 67 points in 63 games (1.06), Robert Thomas with 65 points in 73 games (0.89) and Brayden Schenn with 65 points in 82 games (0.79).

This should come down to Kyrou or Buchnevich as both have been over 70 points for two years in a row. If he plays 70 games, I think Kyrou narrowly beats out Buchnevich.

Goals – 35 to 40

Kyrou elevated his goal scoring from 27 to 37 and should be able to maintain that level if not exceed 40 goals.

The only other players on the Blues who exceeded 20 goals were Buchnevich with 26 and Schenn with 21.

Shots on Goal – 250 to 275

Once again, Kyrou led the Blues with 272 SOG in 79 games (3.4/g). There is no doubt he is the primary shooter on this roster as no other forward averaged more than 2.0 shots per game. Kevin Hayes has been added to the roster and did have 209 SOG in 81 games (2.6/g) but it's unlikely he takes anything away from Kyrou.

Hits – 225 to 250

St. Louis re-acquired Sammy Blais and brought back the most physical player on this roster as he had 238 hits in 71 games. No other player had more than 140 hits in 2022-23.

Vancouver Canucks

Points – 95 to 105 points

J.T. Miller posted 99 points in 2021-22 and Elias Pettersson had 102 points (1.28) in 2022-23 so scoring should not be an issue in 2023-24. Miller followed up his 99 points with 83 points (1.02).

Pettersson is now a star in this league and is more than capable of getting 100 points again.

Goals – 35 to 45

Pettersson led the Canucks with 39 goals on a shooting percentage of 15.5. He was matched by Andrei Kuzmenko who had 39 goals with a shooting percentage of 26.8. Miller was in the mix and ended up with 32 goals on a 14.3 shooting percentage.

My money would be on Pettersson to lead this team.

Shots on Goal – 250 to 275

Pettersson led the team with 258 SOG (3.2/g) followed by Miller with 223 SOG (2.8/g). Brock Boeser is a shooter but has seen his pace go from 3.0/g to 2.4 over the past four seasons.

Hits – 200 to 225

The Canucks traded their most physical player in Luke Schenn but still have Dakota Joshua (222) and J.T. Miller (200). They will miss Kyle Burroughs as well.

Vegas Golden Knights

Points – 75 to 80

The leading scorer on the Stanley Cup winning team was Jack Eichel and he had 66 points in 67 games (0.99) and he was followed by Chandler Stephenson with 65 points in 81 games (0.80).

Eichel should lead this team again but will need to play 65 games to do it.

Goals – 25 to 35

Last season, Vegas was led in goals by Jonathan Marchessault with 28 and Jack Eichel with 27. Mark Stone might have been up there as well but only played 43 games where he had 17 goals.

Marchessault has topped out at 30 goals twice, while Eichel had 36 goals in 68 games in 2019-20.

Eichel could take flight in 2023-24 and exceed 35 once again.

Shots on Goal – 225 to 250

Marchessault led Vegas with 238 SOG in 76 games (3.1/g) while Eichel had 223 SOG in 67 games (3.3/g). Eichel has had four seasons above 3.7 shots per game and should be able to get back there.

Hits – 275 to 300

Keegan Kolesar led the Golden Knights with 279 hits in 74 games followed by Brayden McNabb with 201 hits in 82 games. Ivan Barbashev is next on the list with 182 hits in 82 games while Paul Cotter had 168 hits in 55 games.

Kolesar should lead the pack once again.

Winnipeg Jets

Points – 80 to 90 points

Kyle Connor had 81 points in 82 games (0.99) after having 93 points in 79 games in 2021-22.

Josh Morrissey exploded for 76 points in 78 games (0.97) while Mark Scheifele had just 68 points in 81 games (0.84).

Connor should lead this team once again as it is more than likely Scheifele is dealt at some point.

Goals – 35 to 45

Scheifele had 42 goals in 2022-23 on a 20.4 shooting percentage while Connor went from 47 goals to 32 as his shooting percentage went from 14.8 percent to 11.7 and his shots per game went from 4.0 to 3.3.

Connor might not reach 47 again but 35 to 40 goals are reasonable and should lead the Jets.

Gabriel Vilardi had 23 goals in 63 games while with Los Angeles. He could break 30 next year but will need to shoot more.

Shots on Goal – 275 to 300

Connor had 274 SOG in 82 games while Scheifele had 206 SOG in 81 games. Vilardi doesn't shoot the puck as much as most prolific goal scorers as he had 122 SOG in 63 games (1.9/g).

Connor will be an important piece for the Jets in 2023-24.

Hits – 175 to 200

The Jets were led by Brenden Dillon who had 198 hits, and was followed by Neal Pionk who had 169, Nino Niederreiter with 165 and Adam Lowry with 161.
