Saturday’s Game Picks: Goals, Goals, Goals From Avalanche/Oilers

Another big week in the books last week for our picks here at Dobber Hockey with a solid 5-1 showing only a week ago, taking our overall Saturday record to a very respectable 53-37-0 on the 2023-24 NHL season. Not many super Saturdays left to stack up this regular season loot, but with 14 games on today's NHL betting board, there's a couple intriguing opportunities to get this paper.
As playoff positioning and battles for wild-card spots tighten, expect the intensity of games to go up a couple notches with contending teams really starting to separate themselves from pretending clubs on the bubble. In terms of today's schedule, this is a tough board to handicap, which is why we're keeping our analysis short, sweet, and to the point. Be wary of much you're sprinkling on today's hockey action. It's shaping up to be one of those days that's hard to put a finger on.
As always, do your research, pick your spots (ideally one or two from our breakdowns below), and good luck.

Gold Selection
Philadelphia Flyers @ Boston Bruins – Pick: Bruins ML (-190)
Like we alluded to off the top, not too many "obvious-looking" spots to jump on in terms of serving up a lock bet for our Gold selection of the evening. However, if there is one that we can really get behind, it's backing the Bruins at home against a Philly club that's been up-and-down over the past month, plays awfully against the Eastern Conference this season, and has struggled mightily in terms of the recent head-to-head against the Bruins. Philly has only five wins in their last 20 games against Eastern Conference opponents. When it comes to going up against Boston, forget it.
The Bruins own the Flyers of late, tallying 17 goals combined over the last three meetings while taking all six points in convincing fashion. John Tortorella's crew has only one win in their last seven trips to Beantown and I expect their struggles to continue Saturday evening as the Bruins look to take top spot in the Eastern Conference and home ice advantage in the postseason.
Boston steamrolls in this one. Lock it in for my Gold Pick of the night.
Silver Selection
Colorado Avalanche @ Edmonton Oilers – Pick: Over 6.5 (-134)
Buckle up, hockey heads, this one is going to be extra spicy. Grab the popcorn and a solid wedge of the sectional, you're not going to want to miss much of what is sure to be some run-and-gun-type hockey from the opening puck drop. Without even doing any research into Colorado-Edmonton, this just feels like an over. How can it not? Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar on one side, and on the other, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the red-hot Zach Hyman. Giddy up!
In terms of overall offensive output this season, the Avs sit first in the NHL in scoring and Edmonton fifth, the Oilers own the third-best power-play and Colorado sixth-best, and five of the top-20 point-getters will be going toe-to-toe in a tilt that has all the making of a barnburner. These two offensive juggernauts haven't met since last April, a game in which resulted in only three goals. That was a season ago and since then, both Edmonton and Colorado have different rosters, new offensive looks, and more firepower in their lineups that have us feeling quite comfortable backing the over in this spot.
This one goes over the total in a hurry, which is good for my Silver Pick of the evening.
Bronze Selection
Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers – Pick: Under 6.5 (-128)
Playoff-like atmosphere: check. Interstate rivalry: check. Low-scoring game incoming … hopefully double-check. This one really has all the makings of a low-scoring tilt. Not only have the Panthers allowed the second-least goals-against in the entire NHL this season, but they are an extremely tough team to play against, as the Cats flaunt the seventh-most efficient penalty-killing unit and allow the third-least shots-against per game at a stingy 27.8.
Eight of the last 10 meetings between these Floridian rivals have stayed under the total and that bangs out for us once again tonight in what is set to be one of the tightest-checking contests on the NHL betting board. Bolts-Cats stays low scoring for my Bronze Pick of the night.
Side Bets
L.A. Kings @ Dallas Stars – Pick: Over 5.5 (-140)
Kirill Kaprizov Anytime Goal (+110)
Carolina Hurricanes @ Toronto Maple Leafs – Pick: Under 6.5 (-134)
