Wild West: 100/100 Club Members (Hits & Blocks)

Grant Campbell

2024-04-01

In the pre-season, I wrote an article here on who I thought might get into the 100-hit/100-block club this season. It's not as big a club as one would presume, as most teams will have no more than one or two candidates on their roster.

It is obvious that some teams are built around three or four defenders being physical and blocking shots, with offense an added bonus. Winnipeg, Seattle and Vegas seem like the teams who have built their defense around these categories combined.

Jeremy Lauzon – D – Nashville Predators

Lauzon is a member for the first time in his career. Hits have never been an issue, but this is the first time he has reached 100 blocks. In 71 games, he has 341 hits and 104 blocks, leading the NHL with 445 combined. He's become a regular on the Predators and has killed penalties 48.3% of the time.

Mackenzie Weegar – D – Calgary Flames

Not only has Weegar set a career-high in goals (18), but he has matched his career-high in points (44). He has 167 hits and 184 blocks, ranking third in the NHL with 351 combined. This is the fourth time at 100/100 in his career. He's become one of the most valuable adds in pools that include these categories.

Radko Gudas – D – Anaheim Ducks

Gudas has reached this club for the eighth time in his career, with 208 hits and 142 blocks for 350 combined, placing him fourth in the NHL. He has matched his career-high in goals with six, but won't put up more than 15-20 points.

Matt Roy – D – Los Angeles Kings

Roy is in his fifth NHL season and has now hit 100/100 four times. He has 145 hits and 185 blocks, for a combined 330, which is seventh in the NHL. Roy will add a little offense as well, with 20-30 points each campaign.

Brayden McNabb – D – Vegas Golden Knights

McNabb has 23 points in 74 games, which is one short of his career high. He also has 128 hits and 193 blocks, for a combined 321, which has him eighth in the NHL. This is the sixth time for McNabb.

Darnell Nurse – D – Edmonton Oilers

This is Nurse's eighth time on this list through nine years in the NHL. He has 156 hits and 162 blocks in 72 games. He has been a little disappointing this year as he has just 25 points despite usually around 35-45. He is a highly coveted player in multi-category pools.

Jani Hakanpaa – D – Dallas Stars

Hakanpaa has played just 64 games but has easily had 195 hits and 123 blocks. He has met 100/100 in three of four NHL seasons. His offense is limited to about 15-20 points, which limits his value a little.

Kyle Burroughs – D – San Jose Sharks

Burroughs is a first-time member of the club with 198 hits and 118 blocks in 64 games. It is also the first time he has played more than 48 games in a year. He's averaging 19:12 of action a night. Playing enough games will be the issue for Burroughs, but he should be a cheap addition to most pools.

Brendan Dillon – D – Winnipeg Jets

This should be the sixth time that Dillon reaches this milestone, as he has 209 hits and 99 blocks in 70 games. He has set a career-high with eight goals and has 19 points as well. He seems like a lock for 20-25 points.

Colton Parayko – D – St. Blues

For a player his size, one would think that Parayko was a lock for this every season, but he has done it just five times in nine seasons. He has 107 hits and 195 blocks but has scored 10 goals for the third time in his career, putting up 25 points in 74 games. He is usually good for 25-35 points.

Neal Pionk – D – Winnipeg Jets

As Pionk has settled into 30-35 points, he has had back-to-back 100/100 years with 202 hits and 99 blocks in 74 games. He has now reached the milestone twice in seven years.

Jake Middleton – D – Minnesota Wild

Middleton is now three-for-three in his career with 137 hits and 147 blocks in 71 games this season. He also set career highs in goals (seven) and points (22). He might be a must-add multi-category defender.

Adam Larsson – D – Seattle Kraken

After 33 points, 222 hits and 173 blocks in 82 games in 2022-2023, his 18 points, 142 hits and 142 blocks in 73 games this year might be a bit of a disappointment in most pools. It is the eight time he has reached this milestone, so the floor is pretty safe.

Mario Ferraro – D – San Jose Sharks

Ferraro has 107 hits and 177 blocks in 69 games and has reached 100/100 for the third season in a row. He has added a career-high of 19 points, which is probably around his ceiling.

Josh Manson – D – Colorado Avalanche

This might be the first time that Manson could get into the club with 186 hits and 96 blocks in 68 games. With 23 points, he has had his most production since putting up 37 points in 2017-2018 while with Anaheim. He has had more than 100 hits seven times but has never had more than 100 blocks. He has had more than 90 twice before.

Will Borgen – D – Seattle Kraken

Borgen came relatively close in 2022-2023 with 203 hits and 89 blocks while putting up 20 points in 82 games. He has improved to 173 hits, 101 blocks and 24 points in 73 games, to get into the club for the first time.

Jamie Oleksiak – D – Seattle Kraken

Seattle has no shortage of these types of defensemen who put up hits and blocks. Surprisingly, this is only the second time for 100/100 in 10 NHL seasons for Oleksiak. He has 104 hits and 158 blocks in 73 games while putting up just 13 points.

Dylan DeMelo – D – Winnipeg Jets

DeMelo has put up 100/100 for the fourth time in nine NHL seasons. He's done it three times in a row, with 137 hits and 121 blocks in 74 games this season. He has put up 27 points as well, after 28 in 2022-2023.

Noah Juulsen – D – Vancouver Canucks

He might not get there having played just 53 games (career-high), but Juulsen has 154 hits and 85 blocks. He would be a sure thing if he could play 65-70 games. He won't put up much offense as he has just seven points.

Mikey Anderson – D – Los Angeles Kings

Anderson followed up his inaugural membership from 2022-2023 with another 100/100 output. He has 109 hits and 122 blocks in 65 games to go along with 17 points. At just 24-years of age, Anderson should be a regular member for the next six or seven years if healthy.

Jarred Tinordi – D – Chicago Blackhawks

Tinordi played his first game with the Montreal Canadiens in 2012-2013 but has only played 199 career NHL games, with this year's 46 in Chicago being his career-high. He has 146 hits and 84 blocks and just needs to play eight or nine games to have a shot at 100/100 for the first time.

Nicolas Hague – D – Vegas Golden Knights

Hague has hit 100/100 for the second year in a row with 126 hits and 101 blocks in 65 games. He has 12 points this year and a career-high of 17, so his only value is in multi-category pools.

Drew Doughty – D – Los Angeles Kings

Doughty is just eight hits shy of putting up his eighth campaign of 100/100. He has 92 hits and 131 blocks in 73 games. Add in his 14 goals and 45 points and he is one of the most valuable defensemen in multi-category pools. It's hard to believe he is 34 years old and has played 1,167 NHL games, with 1,980 hits, 1,560 blocks and 662 points. I think he's a lock for the hall of fame.

Tyler Myers – D – Vancouver Canucks

In 15 NHL seasons, Myers has only been a member of this club once in 2021-2022, when he had 145 hits and 148 blocks in 82 games. This year, he is on the cusp for a second time, with 94 hits and 124 blocks in 69 games. His 24 points have been a bit of a bonus as he hadn't had more than 21 since 2018-2019.

Mattias Ekholm – D – Edmonton Oilers

Ekholm had over 100 blocks seven times in his 11 seasons, but had never had more than 100 hits. This year, he has 125 hits and 86 blocks in 70 games and will need 14 more blocks in the 10 games remaining for Edmonton. Not only has he raised his value in hits, but he has 39 points in 70 games which is his best production since he had 44 points in 2018-2019.

Connor Murphy – D – Chicago Blackhawks

Murphy has played just 43 games but has managed to join the club for the eighth time in his career, with 106 hits and 105 blocks. If he was healthy, he would have been much higher in this list.

Vincent Desharnais – D – Edmonton Oilers

Desharnais is a bit of a surprise first-time member as I never thought he would play enough games to get to 100/100. He has 106 hits and 104 blocks in 68 games, while averaging 15:28 per game. A 38.6% share of penalty-kill time has helped him block a few more shots.

Sean Walker – D – Colorado Avalanche

Walker needs four more hits to get to 100/100 and is out day-to-day. This would be his first time in six NHL seasons as he has 96 hits and 112 blocks in 73 games. He has set career-highs in goals (nine) and points (26).

Zach Whitecloud – D – Vegas Golden Knights

Whitecloud has never played more than 59 games in his six seasons with Vegas. He has come close to 100/100 with 98/115 in 2021-2022 and 90/97 in 2022-2023, but finally has a chance with 108 hits and 94 blocks through 54 games this year. He needs six more blocks.

J.J. Moser – D – Arizona Coyotes

Moser has 10 games to get 14 more hits and join the 100/100 club. He has 86 hits and 106 blocks in 72 games. He has chipped in 26 points as well and does have a bit of offense to his game, which means he could be an attractive player in fantasy.

Josh Morrissey – D – Winnipeg Jets

Morrissey had some heady numbers of 145/139 in 2016-2017 and 139/168 in 2017/2018. He had his third time in 2021-2022, with 150 hits and 104 blocks. Unfortunately, he never had more than 37 points in any of those three years. He's still very valuable as he put up 76 points last year and had 89/119. This year, he has 59 points in 74 games, with 84 hits and 95 blocks. He is a long shot to reach 100/100 in 2023-2024.
