Frozen Tools Forensics: Final Weeks

For the past several weeks we have been focusing on streaking players at various positions. The goal was to find players you might want to add/drop during these do-or-die matchups (at least for leagues using a head-to-head format). This week is likely to be our last looking forward article. A lot of leagues are finishing up this weekend, but in case you are in a full season league (either head-to-head or full season), we are going to focus this week on the remaining scheduled games.
We don't always touch on schedules in this article as Dobber Hockey has Looking Ahead to cover that. But for this week we are going to use schedule to define a couple of our parameters for player discussion. To get us started we are going to use the Schedule Planner, located under the Research tab in Frozen Tools. Like with the other reports we have the opportunity to set a custom date range, and given when this article comes out I am setting it starting on Friday, April 5 to the end of the season. I am further sorting that list, not just by games played, but by off days. Essentially, I want to know what teams are playing the most on days where your lineup might not already be full.
Here is the list of most remaining light day games.
Clearly Vegas and Edmonton have great schedules here. Vegas is seven for seven in terms of light day games and Edmonton has one less light day game, but one more game overall. Clearly if your league is still running and you need an edge over the remaining schedule, these are your top teams.
In order to move on this information, I am pulling the current Percent Rostered reports and going to look for players on these four teams who might be available in most leagues. For a threshold here I am going to be focusing on players who are rostered in less than 60 percent of leagues.
First up, Vegas:
Name | Pos | Team | Yahoo Rostered % | Fantrax Rostered % |
CHANDLER STEPHENSON | C | VGK | 23 | 61 |
IVAN BARBASHEV | L | VGK | 35 | 57 |
ANTHONY MANTHA | R | VGK | 4 | 20 |
NICOLAS ROY | C | VGK | 4 | 20 |
PAVEL DOROFEYEV | L | VGK | 0 | 19 |
A couple of interesting notes with the forwards. Ivan Barbashev is playing on the top power-play and on the top line with Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault. He has six points in his last six games and is shooting a little more than twice per game. He has also done this before, and is certainly an interesting add down the stretch.
Somewhat surprisingly, Anthony Mantha is also actually doing things. Second (maybe third?) line, second power play for someone who has a spotty track record and doesn't really shoot is hardly a big endorsement. Mantha however has seven points in his last six games, mostly assists, with a couple of shots to go along with it. It doesn't strike me as particularly sustainable, but we aren't really looking for it lasting beyond a couple of more days.
Name | Pos | Team | Yahoo Rostered % | Fantrax Rostered % |
BRAYDEN MCNABB | D | VGK | 31 | 43 |
ALEC MARTINEZ | D | VGK | 5 | 17 |
NICOLAS HAGUE | D | VGK | 2 | 14 |
On the D side, there are a few peripherals guys available, but nothing too exciting. Alec Martinez is worth a note mostly as a warning, as he was healthy scratched for a few games and does seem to be struggling a bit since returning from his injury.
Over in Edmonton:
Name | Pos | Team | Yahoo Rostered % | Fantrax Rostered % |
ADAM HENRIQUE | L | EDM | 30 | 45 |
DYLAN HOLLOWAY | L | EDM | 0 | 23 |
CONNOR BROWN | R | EDM | 2 | 19 |
WARREN FOEGELE | R | EDM | 6 | 18 |
COREY PERRY | R | EDM | 3 | 11 |
There is definitely less fertile ground here. Adam Henrique and Warren Foegele have gotten the most consistent turns playing with Leon Draisaitl and that is about the best that can be said for anyone on this list. Corey Perry was there on April 3, but had nothing to show for it. Zero points, zero shots, hits, or blocks and a minus three. Adam Henrique is probably the most interesting of the bunch as he has been in that slot for several games now, though it isn't like he is really taking advantage of it. He has three points in his last six games and is averaging less than two shots per game.
In terms of D basically everyone you might actually consider (unless you have a very deep league) is already rostered. Mattias Ekholm has been the story of the playoffs but at 75 percent rostered on Fantrax he isn't available to most managers.
Moving on to Arizona and Chicago. There are a lot of options. I am not going to list the entire squads of both teams here (because that is basically who is left over), but I will flag a few names who are in decent spots and not highly rostered.
In Arizona (as of April 3), Nick Bjugstad (38 percent rostered) is on the top line. Dylan Guenther (49 percent rostered) is on the top power-play and Matias Maccelli (45 percent rostered) has five points in his last four games. Logan Cooley (65 percent rostered) doesn't have as notable deployment but has nine points over his last nine games. All make for interesting potential adds.
In Chicago (as of April 2) Philipp Kurashev (37 percent) was still with Connor Bedard, as was Jason Dickinson (20). Though on the power-play that honor goes to Nick Foligno (22 percent) and Tyler Johnson (10 percent). Kurashev is actually on a bit of a tear right now with 15 points in his last 18 games. It could all disappear at any moment, but that certainly puts him highest on my list of Chicago players to target.
On defense, in terms of point production JJ Moser is available (38 percent) as someone who sometimes chips in offensively, though he hasn't done so in the past seven games (that just means he is due right?). Kevin Korchinski (38 percent) and Juuso Valimaki (26 percent) might be of some interest in deep leagues as they are both getting some amount of time on the second power-play. Overall though it is pretty slim pickings on D unless you are going for someone like Connor Murphy (10 percent) and are just hoping for blocks.
That is all for this week. Do your part to support organizations working to make hockey for everyone.
