Wild West: Team Notes Since the All-Star Break

Grant Campbell

2024-04-08

This week we are going to look at each team in the West and document any notable stats from the All-Star break till now.

Anaheim Ducks (7W-18L-3OT)

Frank Vatrano (28-10-9-19) led the team with 19 points in 28 games, while Alex Killorn (25-11-5-16) had 11 goals in 25 games to lead them in that category. Cam Fowler (27-3-10-13) continues to get 23-24 minutes per night with Olen Zellweger (18-1-5-6) and Pavel Mintyukov (23-2-7-9) poised to take his ice time away. Mason McTavish (21-6-5-11) has slowed down, while Leo Carlsson (20-4-5-9) had two goals on Sunday night. Brett Leason (22-5-5-10) had one of the best stretches of his career so far.

In goal, Lukas Dostal played 19 games with an 89.2 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 6.33, while John Gibson played 13 games with an 86.4 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 15.98. Gibson is signed for three more years at $6.4 million AAV.

Arizona Coyotes (10-17-2)

Nick Schmaltz (29-9-22-31) led the Coyotes with 31 points in the past 29 games, while Clayton Keller (25-13-15-28) led with 13 goals, closely followed by Nick Bjugstad (28-12-6-18), Logan Cooley (29-12-4-16) and Dylan Guenther (29-11-9-20).

Josh Doan (6-3-3-6) had an impressive first few games in the NHL and should be on the radar for a full-time role in 2024-2025.

Even strength production dried up for Sean Durzi (29-0-9-9) who only had four assists at ES. Lawson Crouse (29-3-8-11) had just three goals on 63 SOG.

Karel Vejmelka and Connor Ingram have split starts (15 games each) since the break, with Vejmelka being slightly better. Vejmelka has a 90.0 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 1.95 in 15 games, while Ingram is at an 89.4 and negative 4.57.

Matt Villalta saw his first action in two NHL games but let in five goals on 29 SOG.

Calgary Flames (12-15-0)

Nazem Kadri (27-9-18-27) led the Flames with 27 points while Yegor Sharangovich (27-10-11-21), Blake Coleman (27-9-3-12) and Andrei Kuzmenko (23-9-8-17) were amongst the leader in goals, with Sharangovich having the most at 10.

Connor Zary (18-2-5-7) has struggled and has been a healthy scratch a few times recently. He has just one assist in his past nine games.

Mackenzie Weegar (27-7-12-19) led defensemen with 19 points while Rasmus Andersson (27-1-6-7) struggled with a team-worst minus 12.

Martin Pospisil (24-4-5-9) appears to have cemented his role on this team with some offense and 111 hits in 24 games.

While Jacob Markstrom dressed for 17 games, Dustin Wolf got into eight games and Dan Vladar saw just four.

Markstrom had an 89.5 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 4.17, Wolf posted an 89.6 and negative 1.98, and Vladar had an 85.7 and negative 5.58. It is looking like Wolf could be a regular in the NHL in 2024-2025 even though Vladar has one year remaining at $2.2 million.

Chicago Blackhawks (9-15-3)

Surprisingly, Philipp Kurashev (27-8-19-27) led the Blackhawks in points, just slightly ahead of Connor Bedard (24-7-19-26). Kurashev and Nick Foligno (27-8-11-19) each had the most goals with eight.

Taylor Raddysh (25-0-4-4) who had 20 goals in 2023-2024 has gone 41 games without a goal and has just five in 70 games.

Seth Jones (27-7-8-15) had 85 SOG since the break after having just one goal on 79 SOG in his first 35 games.

Petr Mrazek played 19 games with a 90.5 save percentage and a GSAA of 0.42, while Arvid Soderblom saw nine games with an 89.3 and negative 2.98.

Colorado Avalanche (16-10-3)

Nathan MacKinnon has not faltered (29-17-32-49) and is now two goals away from putting up 50 goals for the first time. He is at 133 points in 78 games, which is the most games he has played since 2018-2019.

Mikko Rantanen (28-13-23-36) has maintained his 100-point pace and now has 102 in 77 games. He missed Sunday's game against Dallas where the Avalanche lost 7-4.

Cale Makar (29-7-19-26) needs three points in four games to reach his career-high in points at 87, yet some think that he has had an off-year.

Artturi Lehkonen (27-12-10-22) has been like a trade-deadline addition after only playing 14 games and putting up eight points before the break.

Jonathan Drouin (28-8-16-24) has a chance to set a new career-high in points as he has 53 points in 75 games and just needs one more point.

Casey Mittelstadt (27-6-8-14) had 42 points in 49 games before the break. He scuttled in his next 13 games in Buffalo with just five points, but now has nine points in 14 games since arriving in Colorado.

Justus Annunen has outplayed Alexandar Georgiev recently and has played 11 games to 19 for Georgiev since the break. Annunen has a save percentage of 93.5 and a GSAA of 10.35 compared to 90.1 and negative 2.09 for Georgiev. Could Annunen steal the show in the playoffs?

Dallas Stars (19-7-3)

Wyatt Johnston (29-17-15-32) is emerging as a driving force on this team and now has 31 goals and 33 assists in 78 games. He's led the team in goals and points since the break.

Jamie Benn (29-13-17-30) is ramping it up at the right time of year after eight goals and 21 assists in his first 48 games.

Logan Stankoven (20-6-8-14) is like found gold for this team and has looked like he is in the NHL to stay. He has just one goal in his past 14 games as things tighten up a little.

Matt Duchene (28-8-11-19) has slowed a little since the break after putting up 45 points in his first 48 games.

It was very unlikely that Thomas Harley (29-3-12-15) was going to maintain his shooting percentage of 14.4 after 12 goals on 83 SOG in his first 46 games. Sure enough, he ended up scoring just three goals on his next 56 SOG.

Roope Hintz (29-8-9-17) had 22 goals and 25 assists in his first 47 games but has slowed a little since the break.

Jake Oettinger played in 22 games and won 16 times while having a save percentage of 90.6 and a GSAA of 1.34. Scott Wedgewood played in 10 games, posting three wins, a 90.0 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 0.84. Oettinger has reached 30 wins for the third straight season but will need to elevate his game a little if the Stars want to win the Stanley Cup.

Edmonton Oilers (18-9-4)

Connor McDavid (31-11-52-63) has had over two points per game since the break and now has 130 points in 74 games (1.76/g), sitting on 99 assists. He also has 114 hits, marking the first time he's had more than 100.

Zach Hyman (31-22-4-26) led the Oilers in goals with 22 and now has 52 goals in 75 games.

Leon Draisaitl (31-17-28-45) has reached 100 points for the fifth time in the past six seasons and sits at 40 goals and 62 assists in 76 games.

Mattias Ekholm (30-6-18-24) had four goals and 15 assists in his first 44 games and now has 43 points in 74 games which is one fewer than his career-high.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (30-6-14-20) has fallen off his point-per-game pace after 44 points in his first 45 games. He now has 64 points in 75 games which is a bit of a drop from 104 points in 82 games from 2022-2023, but not unexpected.

Evan Bouchard (31-6-30-36) has seen a slight surge in points after putting up 11 goals and 43 points in his first 45 games. He now has 79 points in 76 games and has lived up to his playoff production from 2022-2023.

Evander Kane (30-8-4-12) has seen his production dip from 29 points in his first 44 games.

Adam Henrique (27-7-7-14) has played 16 games with the Oilers now and has just four goals and one assist after producing nine points in 11 games with Anaheim just before the trade.

Stuart Skinner got into 21 games, posting 11 wins, a save percentage of 90.2 and a GSAA of negative 1.46. Calvin Pickard saw 12 games, with seven wins, a save percentage of 91.1 and a GSAA of 2.18. Skinner has been just good enough to get the majority of starts.

Los Angeles Kings (18-10-1)

Adrian Kempe (24-10-18-28) led the Kings in points, just ahead of Anze Kopitar (29-11-16-27) and Kevin Fiala (29-14-13-27). Fiala has the most goals (14) since the break.

Pierre-Luc Dubois (29-5-14-19) has seen a slight increase in production after just 20 points in his first 48 games as a member of the Kings.

Quinton Byfield (29-5-13-18) has slowed a little after 35 points in his first 45 games and now has 19 goals and 34 assists in 75 games.

Viktor Arvidsson (13-2-7-9) returned to the lineup and is getting time on the first unit of the power play and averaging over 16 minutes per night. He's had 41 SOG in 13 games and is over 3.2 SOG per game, much like he has been for most of his career.

The Kings have been getting very good goaltending from Cam Talbot who played in 18 games and won 11 games with a save percentage of 92.4 and a GSAA of 10.19. David Rittich has played 12 games with seven wins and a save percentage of 91.4 and a GSAA of 3.15.

Minnesota Wild (16-8-4)

Kirill Kaprizov (28-22-22-44) has been excellent since the break, but the Wild needed him to be excellent before the break as well. He now has 41 goals and 48 assists in 70 games.

📢 advertisement:

Brock Faber (28-3-11-14) has not faltered in his rookie campaign and now has 43 points in 77 games to go along with 62 hits and 145 blocks. I don't think it will be enough to win the Calder over Bedard, but he has to be a lock for runner-up.

Marco Rossi (28-8-2-10) has 21 goals in 77 games as a rookie and 38 points. His fade in production is not uncommon for players who haven't played over 63 games in their short career.

Jesper Wallstedt had one start where he was perfect on 24 SOG. It was a stark contrast from his only other start when he let in seven goals on 34 SOG in January.

Marc-Andre Fleury played 15 games, with nine wins, a 90.2 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 0.85. Filip Gustavsson played 14 games, with six wins, a 90.8 save percentage and a GSAA of 1.67. Now that the Wild are out of the playoffs, Wallstedt could get some more starts.

Nashville Predators (19-6-2)

The Predators willed themselves back into the NHL playoffs and are one point out of clinching a spot.

Filip Forsberg (27-19-19-38) leads the Predators in goals and points since the break. He has a career-high 43 goals and 89 points in 78 games, which are the most games he has played since 2016-2017.

Gustav Nyquist (27-10-23-33) has had the most unexpected career-year at the age of 34 – that I can remember at least. He has 22 goals and 49 assists in 78 games after never having more than the 60 points in 80 games he split between San Jose and Detroit in 2018-2019. He has been with Forsberg and Ryan O'Reilly at ES over 67 percent of the time.

Roman Josi (27-11-22-33) has been a rock this year for Nashville and now has 21 goals and 57 assists in 78 games at the age of 33.

Ryan McDonagh (27-2-15-17) has quietly produced since the break after just a goal and 11 assists in his first 44 games.

Juuse Saros played in 21 games and had 15 wins, a 91.8 save percentage and a GSAA of 8.62. His backup Kevin Lankinen played in eight games, had four wins, a 92.1 save percentage and a GSAA of 3.79.

San Jose Sharks (4-19-3)

Mikael Granlund (26-7-18-25) has had an excellent season on a very bad team. He has 54 points in 64 games and managed to produce 0.84 points per game on a team that has just 171 goals in 77 games.

Fabian Zetterlund (26-7-12-19) has managed 21 goals and 19 assists in 77 games.

William Eklund (25-7-9-16) has had a productive rookie campaign and now has 15 goals and 25 assists in 75 games as a 21-year-old.

Collin Graf (2-0-1-1) signed out of college and got his first NHL point in his second NHL game. He should get a good look in the final games.

Seattle Kraken (11-12-3)

In what has been a disappointing season for the Kraken where they scored just 202 goals in 76 games, they did get better goaltending in 2023-2024 and can look to improve.

Jared McCann (26-8-17-25) has been the only Kraken player to have more than 15 points since the break. He's tied with Matty Beniers (26-8-7-15) and Jordan Eberle (26-8-6-14) for the team-lead in goals during this stretch.

Shane Wright (3-3-1-4) has looked much more NHL-ready in his second audition in 2023-2024 and has been given an opportunity to succeed, playing 16 minutes per game in the three games he has been back.

It appeared that Joey Daccord had won the starting role in Seattle but Philipp Grubauer is still owed $5.9 million AAV for the next three years and they need him to play. Daccord played in 13 games, with three wins, a 90.8 save percentage and a GSAA of 1.30, while Grubauer played in 16 games, posting eight wins, a 90.9 save percentage and a GSAA of 1.94.

St. Louis Blues (15-11-3)

It doesn't look like the Blues are going to have a repeat of firing a coach mid-season and winning the Stanley Cup the same year.

Robert Thomas (29-7-22-29) has led the team in scoring since the break, with Jordan Kyrou (29-13-13-26) and Brandon Saad (29-13-6-19) leading the team in goals. Thomas has a new career-high in goals with 24 and in points with 81 in 78 games.

For some reason, Saad has rediscovered his scoring touch and now has 26 goals in 78 games, which is the most he's had since posting 31 goals in 78 games with Columbus in 2015-2016.

Jake Neighbours (28-12-7-19) was just slightly behind Kyrou and Saad but has had an impressive year with 27 goals in 77 games.

Jordan Binnington has a chance to match his career-high of 30 wins as he sits on 28 in 55 games. Since the break, Binnington has played 20 games, with 11 wins, a 91.6 save percentage and a GSAA of 7.88. Joel Hofer has played 10 games, with four wins, a 92.2 save percentage and a GSAA of 5.22. Binnington has held his own this year and played well.

Vancouver Canucks (14-11-3)

The recent form of the Canucks hasn't been disastrous by any means, but it has caused some concerns for the playoffs.

Since the break, J.T. Miller (28-14-16-30) has led the team in goals and points. He also has 82 SOG and 82 hits in that period, going 59.3% in the faceoff circle. Miller now has 97 points in 77 games and could reach 100 points for the first time in his career.

Quinn Hughes (28-4-20-24) now has 16 goals and 70 assists in 77 games and could reach 90 points. He should be a finalist for the Norris Trophy.

Elias Pettersson (28-6-16-22) has Vancouver fans in a bit of a panic because of his recent form. After posting 64 points in his first 49 games, Pettersson has definitely slowed his production. Outside of points, he has 38 hits, 28 blocks and has been 53.9% in the faceoff circle since the break. He has quietly improved his game in other areas.

Brock Boeser (28-9-10-19) has slowed from 30 goals and 22 assists in his first 49 games but still has 39 goals and 32 assists overall to set career marks in goals and points.

Sam Lafferty (25-2-1-3) is a team-worst minus-11 since the break, with no other player being worse than minus-five. The Canucks need the player who had 10 goals and 10 assists and was a plus-16 in his first 49 games as a Canuck.

Since the break, Thatcher Demko played in 14 games, won eight and had a save percentage of 90.6 with a GSAA of 0.85. In just 49 games, he has reached a career-high with 34 wins.

Casey DeSmith has played in 13 games, winning four while posting a save percentage of 86.7 and a GSAA of negative 11.43.

Arturs Silovs has played in two games, winning both while registering a save percentage of 93.0 and a GSAA of 1.13.

It is a disaster for Vancouver if Demko doesn't come back soon and in form.

Vegas Golden Knights (13-11-2)

Since the break, Jonathan Marchessault (26-16-10-26) has carried the Golden Knights. He has 41 goals in 76 games after a prior high of 30 goals in 76 games in 2021-2022.

Anthony Mantha (27-8-12-20) has played 14 games with Vegas and has three goals and five assists after putting up 12 points in the 13 games prior to the trade from Washington.

Noah Hanifin (26-4-12-16) has played 14 games with Vegas and has a goal and five assists after producing three goals and seven assists in the 12 games with Calgary prior to the deal.

Adin Hill has been out for a few weeks but has still played 15 games since the break. He has six wins, an 88.9 save percentage and a GSAA of negative 6.49. He is supposed to return sometime this week but doesn't have much time to get his game back.

Logan Thompson has played 12 games, with seven wins, a 91.4 save percentage and a GSAA of 3.35. We have seen Vegas go with the unheralded hot goalie before.

Winnipeg Jets (17-12-1)

Josh Morrissey (30-2-27-29) has led the Jets in scoring since the break while Kyle Connor (30-13-13-26) has led in goals.

Sean Monahan (29-11-10-21) has played 29 games with Winnipeg as he joined them just after the All-Star game. He's been a very good addition to the lineup.

Tyler Toffoli (27-10-7-17) has played 13 games with the Jets and has five goals and two assists, but Toffoli has just one goal in his past eight games.

Cole Perfetti (22-3-3-6) has faded considerably after putting up 30 points in his first 47 games.

Connor Hellebuyck has played in 22 games since the break and won 11, posting a save percentage of 91.3 and a GSAA of 6.18. On the year, he now has 34 wins in 57 games.

Laurent Brossoit played in nine games and won six, with a save percentage of 92.4 and a GSAA of 4.66.
