McDavid’s Masterclass: The Top-10 Numbers From 97’s Historic Season

When it comes to the array of impressive numbers from the masterpiece of a season by Edmonton Oilers talisman Connor McDavid, the only one that matters right now is whether the zero in his Cup column updates to one following Game 7. However, even if it doesn't, this campaign of hockey majesty is worth discussing – especially when so many of these digits relate to records held only by the most prestigious hockey royalty. Regardless of what happens tonight, McDavid's 100 games of regular and postseason hockey over the past nine months have been nothing short of mesmerizing.

10) 16

Following a loss to the San Jose Sharks in November, the Edmonton Oilers were drowning and a postseason berth looked like a laughable pipe dream. Swap out Jay Woodcroft for Kris Knoblauch and fast forward to February, where the Oilers reeled off 16 consecutive wins to catapult themselves back into the playoff picture. Over that span we saw a glimpse of what was to come from McDavid as Edmonton's captain was at the focal point of the Oilers' turnaround, registering 26 points over the course of the win streak.

9) 27

McDavid is just entering the prime of his career at only 27 years old. A scary number in its own right if the Newmarket, Ontario, product is just hitting his full potential. With skating ability and edge work like McDavid, we're likely in store for many more seasons at this elite level of hockey prowess.

8) 72%

McDavid notched at least a goal or assist in 82 games this season (regular and postseason combined); the Oilers have won 59 of those games – good for an impressive 72%-win rate when 97 finds the scoresheet. Not bad.

7) 1.63

Heading into Game 6, through 72 career NHL postseason games, McDavid held the second-highest point-per-game total in NHL history behind … you guessed it, Mr. Record Books a.k.a. Wayne Gretzky at an impressive 1.63. No one is ever going to touch the insanely-impressive number of 1.84 for Gretz, but this is just another statistical feather in McDavid's cap.

This number dipped slightly following his lack of production in Game 6, so we're cheating a bit including it on our list. However, the number still deserves some love as one of the top stats from McDavid's magical season and when your name is in the mix with two of the biggest legends in the game's history and the likes of current rising stars in Leon Draisaitl (1.49 points per playoff game) and Nathan MacKinnon (1.30 points per playoff game), it garners attention.

6) 174

This one is simple and just as impressive as the others: McDavid has 174 combined points between his 99 games of regular season and playoff performances this year and no one has notched as many since Mario Lemieux put up an unfathomable 188 in 94 games during the 1995-96 season.

5) 7 x 100

McDavid registered the seventh 100-point season of his career during the 2023-24 campaign, making him only the third player to do so in NHL history before the age of 28. Only Gretzky (10) and Lemieux (eight) had more triple-digit seasons at the same age.

4) 8 in 2

Number four goes hand-in-hand with our number-one choice, but most points ever when facing elimination in the Stanley Cup Final is straight up impressive. Back against the wall, McDavid has locked in and taken his play to the next level. When he's on his game like he is right now, McDavid is not only a step ahead of the competition in terms of skating ability, he's two steps ahead. The Panthers are clearly one of the best all-around defensive units we've seen in the Cup Final for a number of seasons and they have no answer for 97. Captain clutch has eight points in elimination games in this series, the most ever in a final in NHL history.

3) 100

Regular-season assists have only hit triple digits three times before this year: Bobby Orr, Lemieux, and Gretzky. That's it. No disrespect to Nikita Kucherov who also accomplished the staggering feat this season, but there's something just a little bit sexier about McJesus' 100-piece.

2) 34

Only one season removed from posting a league-leading and career-high 64 goals, McDavid seemingly shifted gears to focusing on being one of the best playmakers we've ever seen this year. McDavid was nothing short of magical throughout the regular season while creating elite scoring chances for his teammates all year to the tune of 100 apples. As highlighted above, no one passes the puck better than McDavid and with 34 assists in these playoffs he now sits alone with the most ever in a single postseason. A common theme here, he passed Gretzky's previous record of 31 helpers back in 1988.

1) 4×2

We touched on it above, but back-to-back four-point nights … facing elimination … IN THE STANLEY CUP FINAL. Stop it. Nothing else needs to be said here other than the obvious: no one has ever done that before in NHL history. Not 99, not 66 – no one. Putting the team on your back takes on a completely new meaning when it comes to how spectacular McDavid has been when the Oilers need him most, and his Game 4 and 5 performances were ones for the ages. Witnessing history to this degree doesn't happen very often, we're going to soak it up for as long as possible.
