Top-200 Cap League Skater Rankings – July 2024
Alexander MacLean
2024-07-25
It's the end of July, and that means we have most of the free agents signed. The 2024 rookie crop won't be incorporated until the next update, and there is still some tinkering to be done with point projections. Overall, still some work to do this summer. Take a gander at the rankings below, and let me know if you have thoughts or comments. They're always welcome, but especially during the off-season.
But first, in just under a week (!) from now, the 19th annual Fantasy Hockey Guide will be released. That’s right, Dobber has earned your trust for 19 years. You can pre-order your digital copy here, or for another $5 you can get the Fantasy Prospects Report along with it (Value $14.99) here.
Standard pre-rankings note:
This isn't meant to be a be-all and end-all rating system for you to use without thinking and just trade your players for anyone above them on the list that you can find, but used with some foresight for managing salaries. The assumed league setup is for points-only leagues, and I have made an effort to balance it for a range of league and roster sizes. Cap hit is used for the player cost, so if your league uses salary or AAV, please account for that, as it can greatly change the impact of rookies. The rankings are set up so as to provide the most value in the current season, while providing some value in future years, based on modeling for predicted salary increases and production growth.
For those of you with variations from this setup, whether in terms of number of teams, salary space, roster positions, or scoring categories, you can make your own personal tweaks to move players up or down as necessary. This list is made to be a baseline guide for player evaluation, and to promote discussion and understanding of how to optimize rosters in a cap league setting.
If you note a mistake, or have any further questions about the ranking system, please let me know. You can find me on Twitter here @alexdmaclean.
Comments help with optimizing the values, because they're not perfect and they never will be.
We're sticking with the +/- 5.0 rating that Dobber uses on all of his rating schemes as the range for approximately equivalent value. The skater and goalie rankings are synched so that the value of a skater against a goalie can be compared, though the scale of the ratings has changed a little since the last update.

To see crosby so low after some of his best year in the last two years is suprising
I feel like something is broken with your ranking system right now…
There used to be a lot of low dollar contracts listed at the top, but sometimes the real life value of the players was questionable.
I remember there was a mention that you’ve tweaked the formula some time ago.
Looking at this current list, the top 40-ish are basically a list of the most expensive players in the league. I get that they are the top point scorers but it seems like salary value is no longer weighted very highly.
And then at #38 you have Jack Quinn out of nowhere as the first “value” contract??? This has got to be an error.
…as opposed to Wyatt Johnston at #92? There has got to be a glitch in the formula.
I am not trying to be a jerk by the way it just looks like the rankings are off.
