Physical and Fearless: The Top-10 Fantasy Banger League Beauties

2024-08-19

Aside from the obvious alliteration appeal of the term, banger league beauties are actually critical to the success of any fantasy hockey team competing in a multicat league counting hits, penalty minutes, and blocked shots. Reeling in one, or even two, of these studs is sure to set any GM up for a successful season, so knowing who to target in the coming weeks of fantasy draft prep is essential. Here are our top-10 banger league beauties who fill out peripheral categories while still producing at the offensive end.

10) Tom Wilson

If not for a rash of serious injuries over the past few seasons that includes ACL surgery, a badly broken nose, and other ailments, Wilson is undoubtedly higher up this list as one of the league's top power forwards. Thirty-five points in 74 games in 2023-24 doesn't exactly jump off the page for the scrappy vet, but with the Capitals an improved group via offseason additions and a fully healthy Wilson, the 30-year-old could be a steal of a pick at the back end of drafts. Wilson racked up 228 hits, 133 penalty minutes, 169 shots on net, and 74 blocked shots and once again will likely be deployed on the first line with Dylan Strome and Alex Ovechkin. Sprinkle in his role on the top power-play unit and Wilson becomes an even more attractive option. However, that does come with injury risk due to his aggressive style and, at times, lack of discipline.

9) Evander Kane

Much like Wilson above, Evander Kane's appeal also comes with inherent injury risk. Another angle to consider before drafting Kane is the top-six forward group in Edmonton is getting very crowded with offseason adds of Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, who are both sure to get good shots at major minutes. Even still, Kane has cemented himself as a banger league beauty with 25-plus goal potential and a mean streak that regularly leads to game sheets with crooked numbers in hits and penalty minutes. Keep a close eye on Kane's status during training camp and where head coach and bench boss savant Kris Knoblauch utilizes Skinner and Arvidsson, that will directly impact Kane's draft stock.

8) Mackenzie Weegar

It's likely a bold move to expect Weegar to repeat a career high 20 goals next season, but he's a defenseman that fills out banger league categories better than most. The Calgary Flames could be in serious trouble this season in terms of producing goals, but Weegar's appeal truly lies in his 200 blocks, 194 hits, 208 shots, and 51 penalty minutes that he put up last year. Don't be surprised when he's one of the first six or seven blue-liners off the board once fantasy draft season kicks off in a matter of weeks.

7) Joel Eriksson Ek

When it comes to banger league studs that definitely don't get enough credit for their offensive ability, Joel Eriksson Ek (JEEK) is a player that truly any fantasy hockey GM would love to have employed on their squad. Somewhat buried in the small market that is Minnesota, JEEK would be getting a lot more love and attention almost anywhere else, as the 27-year-old Swede has been steadily improving year over year since entering the NHL as a 20-year-old rookie back in 2016-17. Fast forward to this season and JEEK enters the NHL campaign as a fantasy option capable of chipping in peripherals while also bringing 70-plus-point potential. A perennial top-10 Selke Trophy vote-getter, JEEK is as complete a player as you'll find who is deployed in all situations for the Wild and should be considered a strong option starting anywhere from the fourth round and down, depending on league depth and format.

6) Moritz Seider

Taking absolutely nothing away from the first-five names on this list, but the next five are just downright dirty while bringing so much fantasy value to the table – regardless of format. How do you not love a player like Seider? Young, durable, skating ability, hits, block shots, and chip in with at least 40-or-50 points, the sixth-overall pick from the 2019 NHL Draft is a lock to be one of the first six-or-seven defenseman off the board next season for multicat leagues. Fifty-one penalty minutes were just the cherry on top of 213 blocks, 211 hits, and 42 points that saw Seider cement himself not only as the leader of Detroit's back end, but as an elite fantasy hockey defenseman and banger league beauty. The sky really is the limit for Seider who is seemingly just starting to scratch the surface of his potential.

5) Rasmus Dahlin

It took Dahlin a few seasons to settle in at the NHL level before blossoming into a fantasy dynamo, but oh, baby, the 24-year-old is now forging his mark in a very big way on the Buffalo Sabres' blue line. Dahlin is a key piece of a really good young Sabres' core that includes the likes of Owen Power, Bowen Byram, Jack Quinn, J.J. Peterka, Dylan Cozens, Tage Thompson, and even Zach Benson. A core that is sure to push the Sabres back into playoff relevancy sooner-than-later and allow Buffalo to put goals on the board with the best of them. Being a major contributor to that, Dahlin eats heavy minutes while anchoring the top power-play unit and filling out peripheral categories like an absolute beast. Career highs in hits (195), blocks (154), and shots on net (235) just a season ago, Dahlin is set to be a perennial top-10 rearguard option finishing in the running for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman for years to come.

4) Vincent Trocheck

Trocheck is one of the types of players that coaches and fans love and opposing teams hate to play against – that is how good and also valuable the underrated American is. Name an angle of the game of hockey and Trocheck covers it better than most: Special teams' contributions, peripheral categorical coverage, face off percentage, plus-minus, there literally is nothing on the ice Trocheck cannot do at an elite level. Flying under-the-radar for most of his NHL tenure, Trocheck really established himself as a banger league beauty this past season for the New York Rangers in which he put up career numbers across the board and followed it up by being, arguably, their most important player in the playoffs while leading the Blue Shirts with 20 points in 16 games. This is a player that not only brings so much value in terms of his fantasy contributions, but Trocheck is also a pivotal piece responsible for the Rangers' success, getting a piece of him within the first-three-or-four rounds is an approach we highly recommend.

3) J.T. Miller

When you hover around the triple-digit mark in points for multiple consecutive seasons and fill out important peripheral categories in a similar fashion, a player like J.T Miller can be the difference-making production that takes a GM from obscurity into the money. Miller garnered top-20 Hart Trophy voting in three of the last five seasons and he should be looked at as a reliable option that comes off fantasy draft boards within the first-three rounds. The Canucks will assuredly be in the mix for one of the top-three spots in the Pacific Division once again and that cements Miller as an enticing option who can bring it with hits, penalty minutes, and elite offensive production.

1A) Brady Tkachuk & 1B) Matthew Tkachuk

Yes, we realize this is a bit of a cop out in terms of a top-10. Although, who else would top a list of this nature? Brady finished third in the NHL in hits last season with 293 and that has us leaning toward him as the slight edge but Matthew is right behind him. Banger league beauties are now defined by these two players and both are the prototypical agitators opposing fan bases hate and home supporters adore. Those angles don't factor into fantasy success, but offensive production and peripheral categorical coverage do, making both Tkachuks potential first-round targets who are mostly unrivaled in terms of overall fantasy potency and production.
