Looking Ahead: Have a Wild Time Next Week

Welcome back everyone! We have lots of injuries and schedule quirks to navigate here, so let's dive on in!

The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)

Edmonton Oilers goaltending
– This is a rare two-man recommendation here, but it comes with a rare little quirk in the schedule.

Last week something happened in the NHL that doesn't happen too often, and the funny thing was it happened twice. We had two teams that played on a Sunday then a Monday and that's sort of rare with the way the NHL makes the schedule, as I can only remember a handful of times where that happened (or at least I noticed). This upcoming weekend/Monday we have the Edmonton Oilers on the slate, which lets us both cap off the week and start the week with putting points on the board.

Originally, I wanted to highlight someone on the Edmonton top power play with Connor McDavid out, but all of those players have very high roster numbers and going down to the Edmonton depth just isn't going to do it for fantasy. So, let's talk goaltending! For Stuart Skinner, I can't say that I love the GSAA number right now at -4.44, but he might be our only option in net. His roster numbers are higher on most fantasy platforms, so this play would be for those rostering him, if he's on your roster you're going to have to start him. As for Calvin Pickard, I'm almost positive that if you went onto your waivers right now that he's available.

Goals and assists are variance-based while shots on goal are almost guaranteed, but if goaltending is a way to end or start a week, I'll take it. Good news is if you're rostering both you'll know who gets the Monday start once Sunday is announced, so be sure to check your league's designation and GoaliePost for any updates.

The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)

Anthony Cirelli, C, Tampa Bay Lightning (Rostered in 32% of ESPN leagues, 42% Fantrax, 19% Yahoo)
– The day has finally come! Anthony Cirelli has always been a player that I like for the NHL, but fantasy not so much. Now, he might just be the early-season add for the long-term, and possibly even for the very short-term.

Two weeks ago, Cirelli was a cheaper C that I would play in DFS from time-to-time with not much thought as far as fantasy, and that goes back a couple seasons now. Fast forward, and Cirelli might make for a good building block given how he's been playing with his linemates. He's been excellent with Brandon Hagel on his LW, and there's occasions where the Bolts will deploy Nick Paul from third-line center to RW on the Cirelli line. This line, when it's put together, has 4.96 goals per 60 minutes. Granted, small sample, but an encouraging one.

Scoring from the C position in fantasy is hard to come by once you get past the Auston Matthews/Nathan MacKinnon/Connor McDavid group of the elites, so adding a player like Cirelli for that position could be advantageous. This is an add that you can go ahead and make now, I'm not going to stop you at all, or if you want to wait on it for a week, that's cool as well. Tampa is only on the schedule twice next week so if you need to use the acquisition elsewhere, by all means. However, he makes a great acquisition for the rest of this week, as Tampa plays on both of the off nights on Friday and Sunday.

The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)

Seth Jarvis, RW, Carolina Hurricanes (Rostered in 73% of ESPN leagues, 96% Fantrax, 86% Yahoo)
– Ever had a 3-0 fantasy team that's finding itself down plenty and scroll through your lineup during a Teams meeting to see Seth Jarvis on the third line? Surly I can't be the only one here, and while it's not a full panic, there is as we say, "cause for concern."

Totally unbiased opinion here, but I like Jarvis on the top line for Carolina. While being on a third-line checking line for Carolina (that is still a productive line), there's a positive that he'll get softer matchups, and the ice time hasn't dipped too much as he is still on the Carolina top power play. I can see maybe moving forward Carolina deploying him on really any line here and shifting him around throughout a game. For fantasy, I don't really mind taking pieces off of different lines for a lineup, but for fantasy I typically like players top six and top power play. Again, not a reason to go out and try and trade him away, but something to keep an eye on with how the Canes use him going forward.

The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)

Elias Lindholm, C, Boston Bruins (Rostered in 78% of ESPN leagues, 93%, Fantrax, 61% Yahoo)
– Remember the time Elias Lindholm was nominated for a Selke but probably wasn't even the second-best defensive forward on his line? Fun times! Elias Lindholm was just sent to Waiver Wire Ave in my main league, so he is our Anchor this week.

I like how we call this the "Anchor" too because that's sort of what he was doing to David Pastrnak on the Boston top line, which I didn't think coming into the season would 100% be the case. So far Boston and San Jose are tied for the most times shorthanded and for the B's I thought this was going to be an excellent defensive team (Mason Lohrei shareholder in dynasty), so far, not the case. As I mentioned earlier, getting production from the center position might be tougher to come by but would not be surprised if Pavel Zacha is the first-line C as the season rolls along.

Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)

This period runs through November 1– November 10

Minnesota – We love the Wild in the upcoming week! Next week they'll have a LA team that can't stay out of the penalty box, then San Jose, Anaheim, and Chicago all in a row.

Los Angeles
– While I might not like the way the Kings are on the ice right now, they do play four times next week with a lighter schedule to end the week. They're a Love 'Em for now in a get-right spot.

New Jersey
– The Devils have games upcoming against Montreal and San Jose on home ice. Great news for fantasy and DFS.

Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)

Detroit
– Why Detroit looked at their blueline over the offseason, traded Jake Walman, and thought "Yep, we're good!" is puzzling. This week they have a back-to-back against the Leafs and Rangers who already beat them up to start the season.

Seattle
– I know Colorado has their injuries, but it's still Nathan MacKinnon out there on the ice, and that's just who the Kraken will see on the road to start next week.

Dallas
– While the Stars will be at home vs the Hawks next week for a great matchup, they'll only be in action once more. They're a Leave 'Em for the time being.
