Ramblings: Nichushkin, Drouin Return; McMichael Still Hot; Saturday Streamers (Nov 16)

If you missed the night of NHL action because your eyes were glued to the circus that was Jake Paul and Mike Tyson (and the 17 undercards before that)*, let's fill you in on a few happenings.
* Full disclosure: I turned away from the Red Wings/Ducks match on Sportsnet to watch this fight, hoping (but not expecting) that Iron Mike would use his old man strength to knock out cocky Paul.

Valeri Nichushkin made his season debut on Friday, playing his first game since entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program during the second round of last season's playoffs. If you couldn't wait to insert him into your lineup, you probably could have waited at least one game. Nichushkin was held off the scoresheet with a minus-3 and one shot on goal, although he logged 19 minutes while on a line with Jonathan Drouin and Casey Mittelstadt. Regardless of this showing, get Nichushkin back into your lineup, as he was a near point-per-game scorer last season. More importantly, hopefully he can put his off-ice issues behind him.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Drouin also returned to the Avalanche lineup. Sidelined with an upper-body injury since the second game of the season, Drouin was also held without a point and was a minus-2. Having two top-6 forwards back in the lineup will make life a lot easier for the Avalanche, who might have been afflicted with more key injuries/absences than any other team this season.
As you might have suspected with the goose egg point totals and minus ratings, the Avalanche failed to capitalize on the returns of Nichushkin and Drouin and Miles Wood, falling to Washington by a score of 5-2. What's more, Nathan MacKinnon was held off the scoresheet for the first time in 18 games this season.
Alexandar Georgiev is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, so Justus Annunen started for the Avalanche on Friday. Annunen was pulled after allowing three goals on six shots, with Trent Miner making his NHL debut in relief.
Connor McMichael continues to be one of the big stories of the NHL season so far. McMichael scored another two goals in the Capitals' win on Friday. That gives him 12 goals, which ties him for second in the league with four other players. McMichael has been both good and lucky, increasing his shot total by over a shot per game from last season, but he has also doubled his shooting percentage from last season. There's a sell-high opportunity in a non-keeper league if you can flip him for a more established player, but at this point he's a bona fide NHL player and worth rostering in many leagues.

After a conditioning stint in the AHL, Tristan Jarry was back between the pipes for the Penguins on Friday. Allowing five goals on 39 shots isn't quite a really bad start, but it's not exactly notice that Jarry is back on track either. Jarry allowed a goal on his first shot, and he and the Penguins couldn't seem to catch up after that in a 6-2 loss in Columbus. Joel Blomqvist is back in the AHL, so the Pens will have to sink or swim with Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic. Jarry is simply too risky to be trusted in fantasy leagues right now.
In the Blue Jackets' win, Zach Werenski and Dmitri Voronkov each had a goal and an assist.

Mats Zuccarello is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks after undergoing surgery on Thursday night. Zuccarello left Thursday's game after taking a shot to his groin area. Joel Eriksson Ek also left this game, so Marcus Johansson and Ryan Hartman joined Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov on the Wild's top power play. One of those players could remain on the top power play, while the other could as well if Eriksson Ek also misses time.

That Detroit/Anaheim game that I turned away from featured first NHL goals from two prospects of interest.
Cutter Gauthier scored his first NHL goal to break a 3-3 tie in the third period. Gauthier finally scored that first goal in his 17th career NHL game. He skated just under 13 minutes while on a line with Ross Johnston and Jansen Harkins, so he should only be on keeper teams and not single-season teams at the moment.
Marco Kasper also scored his first NHL goal, and he also added an assist in 15 minutes of icetime. Kasper showed some promise during the preseason, although he hasn't had the same level of success during the regular season. Same as Gauthier – only for keeper leagues at the moment.
Kasper's linemate Jonatan Berggren was a potential sleeper entering the season, but he started the season with just one assist in 14 games. However, Berggren now has goals in back-to-back games. The Wings have had scoring issues all season, which have affected multiple players.
Olen Zellweger finished the game with a goal and two assists. Earlier in the season, I didn't know which defenseman would be on Anaheim's top power play. Now we know it is Zellweger, who scored two of his three points on Friday on the power play. He's rostered in just 4 percent of Yahoo leagues, but that number could climb after Friday's performance.
–
William Karlsson's game-winning goal with just over a minute to play and an empty-net goal shortly after secured a 4-2 win for the Golden Knights over Utah. Karlsson finished with three points, which were all in the third period. He now has an even nine points in nine games and is averaging nearly three shots per game.
Karlsson assisted on one of Tomas Hertl's two power-play goals. Hertl has now scored goals in back-to-back games after being held without a goal in his previous seven games.
Earlier in the day, Brayden McNabb signed a three-year contract extension with a cap hit of $3.65 million. McNabb is an original Golden Misfit, currently on his eighth season with Vegas (time sure flies if the Golden Knights are now in season 8). Although McNabb isn't much of a scorer, he has value in bangers leagues for his combination of hits and blocked shots.

Dustin Wolf took care of the Predators on Friday, stopping all 29 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout. With the Flames expected to be below the playoff bar, Wolf was an afterthought in many single-season leagues. However, he has played up to his potential with six quality starts in nine games. He's still rostered in just under half of Yahoo leagues, so he's worth adding in some way if he's available in your league. He and Dan Vladar are alternating starts, so at least he's not being leaned on too heavily in his first NHL season.

With the final two days of head-to-head matchups coming up, let's look for some possible weekend streamers.
Teams with games on both Saturday and Sunday: Carolina, Seattle, St. Louis, Vancouver
I had already recommended Jonathan Lekkerimaki as a possible add yesterday, so you can read more about him here.
Seth Jarvis' upper-body injury this week has meant that rookie Jackson Blake has jumped on the top power play in Carolina. Although he has been held without a point in his last four games, Blake fired seven shots on net on the Utah net on Wednesday. Blake is rostered in just 1% of Yahoo leagues and 18% of Fantrax leagues.
You've probably tuned out Andre Burakovsky by now. However, it's worth mentioning that because of Jordan Eberle's injury on Thursday, Burakovsky was moved up to the Kraken's top line with Jared McCann and Matty Beniers during Friday's practice. Burakovsky has not scored a goal in 17 games, but he has a better opportunity to do that if in fact he is on this line this weekend. He is also widely available in fantasy leagues.
In bangers leagues, Brayden Schenn might also be worth a look. Schenn has three points over his last two games and has averaged two hits per game this season. Despite declining offensive returns, Schenn still continues to average 18 minutes per game.
Need a goalie? Both Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov are injured, which means that Spencer Martin is the probable starter for the Hurricanes today against Ottawa. Check back with GoaliePost for the latest, or get updates emailed to you.
Teams with no games on Saturday or Sunday: Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Utah
Have any excess Ducks streamers on your roster from last week? Now is a good time to get rid of them.
After a hot start, Rasmus Andersson has no points in his last seven games. Andersson started the season with 10 points over his first eight games, which you knew wasn't going to last. Hold onto him in any leagues that require four defensemen, but he could be droppable if you don't need that many d-men.

I don't have any plans to join the migration over to Bluesky, but I may reconsider at some point.
