Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening. Happy early thanksgiving to our American readers and Welcome to the Injury Ward. My name is Logan Clarkson and every Wednesday I will be chauffeuring you through injury news and updates from around the NHL. I'll do my best to offer useful analysis and opinion as it relates to fantasy throughout. As always I’d like to thank every single one of you for reading. Now, on to the bad (and some good) news.
Philip Broberg / STL – Broberg was a full participant in practice Tuesday after missing the last 11 games with a knee injury. This puts him on track for a possible return Saturday at home against Philadelphia. He had started the season with his new team in style after signing an offer sheet sent his way and not having it matched by Edmonton. Broberg was seeing just under 20 minutes a night before the injury including over a minute a night on the powerplay which is a far cry from what Edmonton was feeding him if he even saw the NHL. He managed to post nine points in 11 games with only one PPP. He is a threat to take over top PP in my world since a 32 year old Justin Faulk is not much to compete with should Phillip continue to earn it.
Mike Matheson / MTL – Matheson was scratched last minute for Tuesday's game. No updates yet on when he will be returning or the severity of the injury, but there is some good news as he is travelling with the team for their upcoming three game road stretch. Jayden Struble will benefit by drawing into the lineup in the meantime.
Cole Sillinger / CBJ – Sillinger is looking like he will sit out Wednesday due to an upper body injury. Cole has posted 12 points in 20 games thus far in the current season and has averaged 18:06 time on ice.
Pyotr Kochetkov / CAR – This one looked quite scary. Kochetkov went down behind the net and was not moving for a significant amount of time. He entered concussion protocol on November 23rd after attempting to follow a drive wide from Zach Werenski and ended up taking a high speed face full of Sean Walker's derriere as Walker took Werenski around the net. Fast moving pro athlete butt to the face appears to get you roughly a week off as Kochetkov is possibly able to return back to the lineup as early as this weekend. About as good a prognosis for a concussion you can expect. This opens the door wide for Spencer Martin, but it's a tough situation to excel in all categories for him as Carolina does not give up many shots. If you need wins over save percentage then this is the guy for you.
Auston Matthews / TOR – Matthews was present for a full practice on Tuesday and may be able to return Wednesday against Florida. It was a bit of a slow start this year for Auston but we know who this player is and I would be confident to chalk it up to playing with injury. He should return to being a superstar relatively quickly barring the injury not lingering too much.
Zach Hyman, Viktor Arvidsson / EDM – Hyman and Arvidsson were both given a 5-8 day timeline on November 25th by head coach Kris Knoblauch for their matchy-matchy undisclosed injuries.
Thatcher Demko / VAN – Demko was Vancouver's young silver bullet stud in the crease. Until he was told this offseason that the injury he has been living with is never going to go away. He has to learn to play with it and manage it. An awful diagnosis for a promising player. But, It seems like he is getting closer to returning. It’s been reported by Iain Hamilton of Sportsnet that he may be a gametime decision sooner rather than later. As a Lankinen owner and beneficiary of his shutout last night against Boston, I am getting very worried.
Mikael Granlund / SJS – Granlund has been one of my favorite late round steals in drafts for the last few years. He has taken it to another level after never touching a point per game over a full season. Mikael has put up 24 points in 23 games so far this season. He was averaging 21:16 time on ice while being stapled to first line & power play duties. Granlund is day to day after taking a bit of a late hit to the computing center (head) courtesy of Lyubushkin. The injury is undisclosed but he is slated for a possible return today.
Patrick Kane / DET – Kane is day to day with an undisclosed injury and did not play on monday. Kane is pacing for just 0.5 PPG after checking in with 47 in 50 games last year.
Patrik Laine / MTL – Some great news out of Montreal as Laine has returned to full practice and is travelling with the team on their upcoming east coast swing. Patrik was the focus of lot's of talk in the offseason about him improving his mental health and finally being on a path to success personally. That made the long term knee injury a bit harder of a pill to swallow for most but it seems it's about to be in the rear view mirror. Pulling for this guy.
Chris Kreider / NYR – Kreider has travelled with the team while he is out day-to-day with what has changed from a lower body to an upper body injury during his stint away. Kreider was recently mentioned by Elliote Friedman as being on the trade block along with captain of the team Jacob Trouba. Yikes.
Jamie Drysdale / PHI – Drysdale has been skating in practice wearing a non-contact jersey since November 18th.
Vince Dunn / SEA – Dunn has been slated for return in late November even though he has been travelling with the team on their recent road trip. A guy's guy, who must have really missed the card table on the plane during his injury rehab. Dunn should continue to produce at his regular pace once he is back but it's unknown whether or not he will be resuming PP1 duties with Brandon Montour taking over the spot since his absence.
Matthew Knies / TOR – Knies has had a promising start to the year in his sophomore season. 8 goals and 4 assists for 12 points in 20 GP. He is shooting %22 which most likely won't keep up but playing with star line mates gives him a chance to shoot above league average. Matthew has been skating on his own and was placed on IR retroactively to November 20th. He is eligible to return this weekend.
Alex Pietrangelo / VGK – Pietrangelo will not play Thursday and has been classified as day to day with an upper body injury.
William Karlsson / VGK – Karlsson is out citing personal reasons.
Alex Ovechkin / WSH – Ovechkin has been diagnosed with a fractured left tibia and will miss 4-6 weeks total. Not the best case scenario, but it's also far better to be a bone fracture rather than a ligament tear in most cases. Maybe we finally see Ovi switch out his cans of coke on the bench for a jug of milk. I need this guy back. The NHL needs this guy back. I went as far as wearing his jersey to a WHL game this past weekend and got some looks for sure. All the good juju we can muster here.
Jeremy Lauzon / NSH – The banger himself Lauzon has been listed as day to day after leaving the game on Tuesday against New Jersey. Jeremy has only 103 hits in 22 games so far this year. Kidding, that’s a ton and it's what we've come to expect of the man but I can't imagine his body feels too good taking and giving that kind of punishment.
Leo Carlsson / ANA – Carlsson was not present at practice this morning after being knocked flat by Tye Kartye where he unfortunately collided with the post of his own goal near his hip area. No updates on severity yet for the upper body injury.
Jonathan Drouin / COL – Drouin was labelled as week to week with an upper body injury this morning by head coach Jared Bednar after being a last minute scratch. Not sure if this is a reaggravation of the upper body injury that kept him out for 16 games at the start of the season or not, but it's not ideal regardless. Drouin managed four points in three games since his return and will be sorely missed as the Avalanche were just getting healthy before a disastrous 8-2 drubbing by Tampa Bay.
