Remember, these are prospects. And goalies. Wildly fluctuating, and with no guarantees. Jacob Markstrom, the top prospect goalie in his time, didn’t have his first 20-win season until he was 27! Dryden McKay, now 27, dominated the NCAA all four years he was there and won the Hobey Baker award – still without an NHL contract. Jonathan Bernier was beloved by fantasy owners everywhere – until he was blocked by Jonathan Quick, which eventually ruined his promising upside with the sporadic starts, etc.

The worst thing to happen to fantasy owners is to sit on a goalie for five years only to have never become an NHLer. Goalies generally don’t get their first 20-win season until after they are 24, usually closer to 26. You can count on one hand those goalies that do it before they are 23. So wait time is factored in. Anyway, goalies within +/-6.0 ratings points of each other should be considered equal value, and become a matter of whether you want more upside and longer wait time, or shorter wait time but no upside.
