DFS Tuesday: Detroit’s Power Play; Rangers Top Line; Werenski’s Price, and More

Good day to all my DFS peeps out there. If you played the two-game slate yesterday, I'd like to thank you for your service, but Tuesday was…well, it was a slate, that's for sure. You didn't win, I didn't win…did anybody win? We now go from a Tuesday slate that ended upside down to a nice little 13-gamer today with two spots in particular that I'm looking seriously at right now.

Slate Preview

Red Wings versus Panthers

There is the Florida team that I remember from last season. Last year this Florida team took penalty, after penalty, while to start this season it was the opposite. Fast forward to today, and we're right back to where we started as the Panthers are taking more penalties than any club in the NHL. For Detroit, who has the most power play goals in the past 30 days at 15, this is a potential spot to target. I'm not interested in the depth here, but I could absolutely see myself with some sort of winger stack from the Wings top power play as a potential three-man. I don't mind something like Alex DeBrincat ($5,900), Patrick Kane ($5,300), and Lucas Raymond ($6,200). Even if you wanted to throw Vladimir Tarasenko at $3,200 into your mix, I think that's a decent play here if you're looking to get plenty of exposure to Detroit on this slate. I haven't built my lineup yet… but I'm considering Detroit for the power play.

For the home Panthers, if you're playing Florida on this slate tonight then you might not have too much room to work with otherwise as some of the pricing has gone up recently and not the other way around. Matthew Tkachuk is $7,700 and hasn't scored a goal since the beginning of the month. Both he and Aleksander Barkov ($7,900) are getting their share of assists but on a 13-game slate, I just think there's better matchups with players that are going to allow you to do more with your lineup. The only reason I'm at least considering them here is because of the Red Wings most recent game on Tuesday at home against the Sharks where they fell 6-3 in a loss that I'm sure we all saw coming and had San Jose stacks in plenty of tournaments.

NY Rangers versus Utah

The Utah Hockey Clubbers do a decent job at limiting shots, that I will say, but a not-so-great job of allowing goals and are one of the more penalized teams that we have. With that said, this is where the Rangers top line comes into play for me tonight. Artemi Panarin ($7,600), Vincent Trochek ($5,500), and Alexis Lafreniere ($4,600) are fully correlated and should all play big minutes tonight unless this game goes completely off the rails early. In that case I'd imagine this top line would have contributed to that in some way. The Rangers have had a low scoring road trip so far, but if this top line can get on the board, then I have to think that your lineup is going to be on a good path towards cash if you full three-man stack them. In my single-entry, I'm really considering them here tonight and in multi-entry, they have to be considered.

Going over to the Utah side, my interest is a little bit lower. Nick Schmaltz doesn't really shoot much on the power play, so maybe I could see getting to Clayton Keller at $6,700 or Logan Cooley at $5,200 but there are 13 games on the board and if I were to rank each team then I would likely have Utah towards the bottom. I do like that they're at home and always lean to the home side when it's a close matchup, but going up against Igor Shesterkin isn't ideal for DFS no matter which team it is.

Defensemen

Zach Werenski one month ago was $8K on DK…that number is now at $9,600. Look if you're stacking Columbus (not a bad call), throwing Werenski onto the stack like he's a top forward and building from there is one way to build that might be unique. I could see to where people are going to stay away from Werenski here altogether just given his price. My ceiling for this slate would be more in the $6Kish range as I like Moritz Seider at $6,100, Dougie Hamilton at $6K, and Josh Morrissey at $5,900; all three of these defensemen are in great matchups and I don't mind the price on any of them. Adam Fox with a Rangers stack at $5,500 is maybe just a tad higher than I'd want to spend for him but if I'm looking to stack Rangers, then he at least has to be considered.

Dropping down a tad, I don't think that you can go wrong with Jake Sanderson at $5K for the Senators and Travis Sanheim for the Flyers has caught my eye on a couple of slates recently but each time I put him in I late swap him out…which of course came right on back to bite me. I can't see myself dropping down to cheap defensemen on this slate but if you are playing an expensive Colorado line or Tampa Bay, you could throw on Kaiden Guhle at $3,400 who has had three games over ten DK points recently and one at 9.9. Adam Pelech at $3,200 has been around that price since late 2019, he's always there for you when you need to break glass for a cheap defensemen and Alexander Carrier at $2,800 has been active since going over to Montreal and makes for a good cheap option.

Goalies

I can confidently say that I'm not spending up (I usually don't anyways), but if I was doing so then it's Connor Hellebuyck or bust at $8,300. He might be the only goaltender for DFS right now that I feel confident to where I can just plug him into a lineup and not have to worry that I'll come back to four goals on 24 shots. Going on down the list, I can see myself looking at MacKenzie Blackwood up against the Oilers at $7,600. DFS players might stay away because it's going up against that power play, but Blackwood has been awesome this past month, so I don't mind getting to him at all. Logan Thompson for the Capitals will see a good amount of volume against the Senators and while I can't say that I love some of these Capitals line combos, I do think going to them in net is fine. Playing expensive Winnipeg tonight? If you answered "no" then Joey Daccord is a good option tonight if he's named the starter. Do the smart thing here Seattle, put him in net.

Good luck tonight everybody!

Elizabeth and Lewis reunite to bring you all the latest fantasy news and strategy, such as how our siblings would fare if called on to fill our roles like Owen Sillinger did for bro Cole. Then it’s onto news including coverage of the postponed CGY/LAK game and defensive injuries piling up in MIN and putting some strain on Gustavsson’s performance. Injuries and outjuries include a pair of goalies returning to their teams in Ingram and Shesterkin, as well as how Monahan’s wrist injury opens the door for big minutes for Fantilli. Finally, the pair touch on Voronkov and PLD’s hot streaks, and discuss John Carlson’s rollercoaster in light of Chychrun’s production.

Keeping Karlsson: Tuch Hunch

On this edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast mega-show, Elan and Brian tour every team, ranking a slate of the least bad goalies, noticing the wind in some Red Wings’ and Stars’ sails, dangling snoozer status above a pair of commonly rostered power-play quarterbacks, and rushing or strolling, accordingly, to some skaters on the up and up.
