The Wild West – Revisiting the Trade Block from July 2024

Grant Campbell

2025-01-27

In July 2024, I wrote about players I thought could be on the trade block for each team in the West (link here).

I thought we could re-visit each team and see which of those players have been traded and if there are some players who should be added to the list.

Expecting the unexpected is the lesson to be learned.

Anaheim Ducks

On my list in July, I had Trevor Zegras, John Gibson, Frank Vatrano, Robby Fabbri and Brian Dumoulin. Fabbri, Vatrano and Dumolin were all set to become UFAs after 2024-25 and Zegras and Gibson were possibly looking for fresh starts.

January 2025 update:

Vatrano (48-13-13-26) re-signed with the Ducks for three years at $4.571 million AAV.

The Ducks traded Cam Fowler to the St. Louis Blues and acquired Jacob Trouba from the NY Rangers for Urho Vaakanainen.

I still expect Anaheim to trade Fabbri (36-7-5-12) and Dumoulin (49-0-12-12) and get something for them.

Zegras battled injuries in 2024-25 and struggled again posting just 13 points in 27 games, while Gibson missed the first month and lost the starting role to Lukas Dostal. Gibson has played well since, with a record of 8-8-2 and a save percentage of 91.4.

The Ducks might be patient with both of these players, unless they get an offer they can't refuse.

I could see the Ducks moving another defender with the development of Jackson LaCombe (42-8-13-21).

Calgary Flames

I had included UFAs Andrei Kuzmenko, Anthony Mantha and Dan Vladar along with Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri if the Flames could get them off the books.

Update:

Mantha (13-4-3-7) was injured after 13 games and is likely gone for the season. Kuzmenko (36-4-10-14) struggled mightily but has produced three goals and one assist in his past four games. At one point, he had no value.

Vladar has a record of 6-9-5 with a save percentage of 88.5. His value is fairly limited at this point as well in a trade.

I still think that both Huberdeau (48-19-17-36) and Kadri (48-17-17-34) will be contracts that the Flames will regret much sooner than later and should always look to trade off the books (both have NMCs). The Flames are in the playoffs at the moment, so it is unlikely to happen in 2024-25.

Chicago Blackhawks

Included in July were Taylor Hall, Andreas Athanasiou, Ryan Donato, Alec Martinez, Lukas Reichel, Philipp Kurashev and Seth Jones.

Update:

Taylor Hall (47-9-15-24) was traded to Carolina as part of the Martin Necas and Mikko Rantanen trade. By retaining salary, Chicago was able to get back their 3rd round pick in 2025. It could be argued that they could have dealt Hall closer to the deadline, retained less salary and still got similar value, but it's unlikely.

Kurashev's (34-4-3-7) value has declined considerably after his 54 points in 75 games in 2023-24 and they might be stuck with him for now.

Athanasiou (5-0-0-0) has been hurt for most of 2024-25.

Donato (47-14-14-28) is on pace for a career-year and could command a second or third round pick in a trade or re-signed.

Martinez (22-2-4-6) has missed more games than he has played, and his trade value is fairly diminished.

Reichel (42-4-10-14) has struggled once again in 2024-25 and might need a fresh start. He has played just 141 career games and is still only 22 years of age.

Jones (32-4-16-20), if healthy, is a core piece in Chicago. He missed 15 games in 2024-25 after missing 15 and 10 in the two prior years and the Blackhawks are still a few years out from being a playoff team. They would love to move this contract, I'm sure.

T.J. Brodie (44-2-7-9) is a contract they'd love to move, but not an easy one.

Colorado Avalanche

I had Jonathan Drouin, Logan O'Connor, Alexandar Georgiev, Valeri Nichushkin and Sam Girard on my list. I mentioned Mikko Rantanen and the trouble that the Avalanche would have to fit his impending salary, but it never dawned on me that they wouldn't make it work.

I stated that it was unlikely Drouin, O'Connor or Georgiev were dealt in 2024-25 but were unlikely to come back in 2025-26.

Update:

The Avalanche traded Rantanen (50-25-39-64) to Carolina and got back Martin Necas (51-16-42-58) and Jack Drury (41-4-6-10).

They traded Georgiev (10-17-0, 87.6%) and Nikolai Kovalenko (43-5-11-16) to San Jose for Mackenzie Blackwood (16-13-5, 91.5%) and Givani Smith (13-0-0-0).

They also traded Justus Annunen (12-6-0, 89.4%) to Nashville for Scott Wedgewood (6-5-1, 89.8%).

Juuso Parssinen (29-4-5-9) was acquired from Nashville for Ondrej Pavel and a 3rd round pick in 2027.

Nichushkin (21-11-6-17) was welcomed back to the team but has struggled to remain healthy. I keep on looking at Girard (48-2-17-19) and his $5 million AAV for two more years as an easy savings in salary, but Girard is sneaky valuable to this roster and Colorado continues to make transactions other than him.

Dallas Stars

I only had Nils Lundkvist (39-0-5-5) as a possible trade chip for the Stars in 2024-25, if they were in the playoff race.

Update:

Lundkvist's value might be too diminished to get more value from his perceived pedigree than what he can bring to the Stars on a nightly basis. I can't see them getting more than a 3rd round pick at this point.

Edmonton Oilers

On my list were Cody Ceci, Evander Kane, Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl. Ceci was an impending UFA while Kane and Nurse's salary could help pay for Draisaitl to re-sign. Never for a second did I think that Draisaitl would be dealt.

Update:

Ceci (52-4-11-15) and a 3rd round pick were traded to San Jose for Ty Emberson (47-0-9-9).

Kane has missed all of 2024-25 and has been put on LTIR.

Nurse (46-4-17-21) has been better in 2024-25 but has five years remaining at $9.25 million AAV.

Draisaitl re-signed for eight years at $14 million AAV.

Vasily Podkolzin (49-6-13-19) was acquired from Vancouver for a 4th round pick.

Dylan Holloway (50-15-22-37) and Philip Broberg (37-3-12-15) were both offer sheeted by St. Louis which Edmonton was unable to match.

Los Angeles Kings

Listed were Tanner Jeannot, Vladislav Gavrikov and David Rittich who were set to become UFAs, and Arthur Kaliyev who I felt might need a fresh start somewhere else.

Update:

Jeannot (43-5-4-9), Gavrikov (46-2-14-16) and Rittich (11-10-0, 88.6%) are unlikely to be traded if the Kings are in the playoff hunt near the deadline.

Kaliyev (9-2-1-3) was put on waivers and claimed by the NY Rangers. I'm surprised that he didn't have trade value.

Minnesota Wild

The only realistic player I had listed was Frederick Gaudreau who had four years remaining at $2.1 million AAV and had his role reduced in 2023-24.

Update:

The Wild traded Daemon Hunt, a 1st round pick in 2025 and a 2nd round in 2027 for David Jiricek.

Gaudreau (50-9-11-20) has been better in 2024-25 and has more than likely secured his role.

Nashville Predators

I had listed Gustav Nyquist and Dante Fabbro as UFAs, with Tommy Novak, Philip Tomasino, Juuso Parssinen and Cody Glass as young players who might lose their spots or the patience of the Predators.

Update:

I thought the Predators would safely be in the playoff hunt, so were unlikely to move Nyquist (47-9-11-20), but they have both struggled and they will try to get what they can for him. They have been very busy.

Fabbro (40-4-8-12) was put on waivers and claimed by Columbus.

Novak (39-7-8-15) has struggled and could find himself on another team sooner than later.

📢 advertisement:

Tomasino (34-5-6-11) was dealt to Pittsburgh for a 4th round pick in 2027.

Glass (38-3-9-12) was traded to Pittsburgh before the season started with a 3rd round pick for Jordan Frasca.

Parssinen (29-4-5-9) was dealt to Colorado for Ondrej Pavel and a 3rd round pick in 2027.

Yaroslav Askarov (3-5-2, 89.9%) was traded to San Jose with Nolan Burke and a 3rd round pick in 2025 for Magnus Chrona, David Edstrom and a 1st round pick in 2025 (Vegas).

Scott Wedgewood was traded to Colorado for Justus Annunen and a 6th round pick.

Alexandre Carrier (46-2-15-17) was traded to Montreal for Justin Barron (30-3-1-4).

San Jose Sharks

I had listed UFAs Mikael Granlund, Jan Rutta, Vitek Vanecek, Mackenzie Blackwood and perhaps Logan Couture if he was healthy. I also thought that Luke Kunin and Nico Sturm should be dealt if they could get value in return.

Update:

The Sharks traded Ty Emberson (47-0-9-9) to Edmonton for Cody Ceci (52-4-11-15) and a 3rd round pick.

The Sharks traded Chrona, Edstrom and Vegas's 1st round pick in 2025 to Nashville for Askarov and a 3rd round pick in 2025.

They dealt Matt Benning (7-0-0-0), a 6th round pick and a conditional 3rd round pick to Toronto for Timothy Liljegren (39-4-5-9).

Blackwood, Givani Smith and a 5th round pick were traded to Colorado for Georgiev, Kovalenko, a 2nd round pick in 2026 and a 5th round pick in 2026.

Vanecek (3-8-1, 88.5%) has been injured for much of the year and once healthy could be dealt.

Granlund (50-14-29-43) could command quite a return as a rental, but he has also had great chemistry with the Sharks.

Rutta (51-2-6-8) could have some value as sixth or seventh defender for a contending team.

Kunin (52-11-7-18) is a playoff type player who some teams could make use of. He could get a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Sturm (41-5-6-11) is excellent in the faceoff circle (63.4%) and a playoff team might covet that.

Seattle Kraken

I thought that the Kraken would potentially be one of the busiest sellers at the deadline in 2024-25 and nothing has really changed that opinion. I had listed Yanni Gourde, Brandon Tanev, Adam Larsson, Will Borgen and Joey Daccord as UFAs that they might move on from. I also listed Andre Burakovsky as a player who hasn't lived up to his contract that they might look to move.

Update:

The Kraken traded Will Borgen (51-3-3-6) and a 3rd and 6th round pick in 2025 to the NY Rangers for Kaapo Kakko (47-8-20-28).

Gourde (35-6-10-16) and Tanev (48-8-7-15) are still on the table. Burakovsky (47-4-14-18) has continued to struggle in terms of his two years remaining at $5.5 million AAV.

Larsson signed for four more years at $5.25 million AAV while Daccord signed for five years at $5 million AAV.

St. Louis Blues

I had listed Radek Faksa, Kasperi Kapanen and Ryan Suter as UFAs that the Blues might look to move if they were out of the playoff picture. I also thought that Scott Perunovich might need an opportunity elsewhere.

Update:

Faksa (38-3-6-9) and Suter (50-1-8-9) are still playing regularly for the Blues while Kapanen (37-6-4-10) was put on waivers and picked up by Edmonton.

Perunovich (24-2-4-6) has seen limited games and ice time once again.

Utah Hockey Club

I had listed Alexander Kerfoot, Nick Bjugstad, Michael Carcone, Ian Cole and Karel Vejmelka as UFAs who Utah should look to move if they are out of the playoffs.

I also thought that Barrett Hayton could be running out of time in Utah.

Update:

Utah has added roster players to date, with Olli Maatta (46-1-10-11) being acquired from Detroit for a 3rd round pick in 2025.

Kerfoot (49-6-9-15), Bjugstad (41-5-7-12), Carcone (31-3-6-9), Cole (49-1-12-13) and Vejmelka (11-14-3, 91.2%) are still on the table depending on the playoff picture. At this point, Carcone might not have much value on the trade market.

Hayton (49-12-14-26) has begun to heat up after an inconsistent first 40 games in 2024-25. He could be off the table.

Matias Maccelli (48-8-9-17) has struggled to find a consistent role in the top six with the development of Logan Cooley (49-15-27-42) and Dylan Guenther (40-16-18-34). With Guenther injured he might get an opportunity to produce in the short-term, but he could find himself expendable.

Vancouver Canucks

At the time of writing in June 2024, I had listed just Brock Boeser who was an impending UFA and Nils Hoglander and Vasili Podkolzin who were at a bit of a crossroads in their development.

Update:

Outside of Quinn Hughes, who isn't on this list now?

The big ones are obviously J.T. Miller (38-8-25-33) (who has seemingly been traded to the Rangers, Carolina and Buffalo in the past week or so) and Elias Pettersson (42-11-19-30). I've made my opinion known about trading either one of these guys (it's not a trade that you can win in the short-term).

Boeser (41-16-16-32) being re-signed is still an uncertainty and I'm starting to think that the Canucks might not go down that route. He could be the surprise trade out of town that might soothe the masses right now. Moving Boeser makes more sense than anyone else outside of Hoglander (44-3-7-10).

Podkolzin was traded to Edmonton for a 4th round pick in 2025.

Vegas Golden Knights

I had listed the seven UFAs that Vegas had going into 2024-25 as possibilities but this is a playoff team so it's unlikely they moved any of Brett Howden, Keegan Kolesar, Victor Olofsson, Shea Theodore, Brayden McNabb, Adin Hill or Ilya Samsonov.

Update:

Kolesar (50-10-11-21) was re-signed for three years at $2.5 million AAV.

McNabb (50-3-8-11) was re-signed for three years at $3.65 million AAV.

Howden (49-16-6-22) was re-signed for five years at $2.5 million AAV.

Theodore (49-6-38-44) was re-signed for seven years at $7.425 million AAV.

That leaves Olofsson (29-11-8-19), Hill (19-9-3, 90.3%) and Samsonov (12-6-1, 89.7%).

Winnipeg Jets

I did not see the success for Winnipeg in 2024-25 that they are enjoying. They are a slam dunk for the playoffs.

I had listed Nikolaj Ehlers, Alex Iafallo, Mason Appleton, Vladislav Namestnikov and Neal Pionk as impending UFAs who they could trade if they were out of the picture.

I also listed Cole Perfetti and Rutger McGroarty as possible trade chips.

Update:

Perfetti (51-10-18-28) was signed for two years at $3.25 million AAV, but that doesn't guarantee he stays a Jet. After his playoff in 2023-24, the Jets might want to bring in a player like Mikael Granlund.

The Jets traded McGroarty (3-0-0-0) to Pittsburgh for Brayden Yager who was the 14th overall pick in 2023.

All of the Jets impending UFAs remain UFAs.
