Good day, everyone! So, Tuesday was…something else, that's for sure! You pretty much needed the Buffalo top line or weirdly the Blackhawks going into Tampa Bay to come out at the top of tournaments. Sometimes you run into elite offenses like Chicago. I didn't play yesterday but had a good reason (yeah, I just forgot) but Tuesday entered into a $5 and got $2 back because as it turns out, the highest scoring game, and maybe most entertaining, was Anaheim versus Seattle. Again, Tuesday was a funky slate. Let's rebound and get it today.
Slate Preview
Carolina Hurricanes
Tuesday, I went against the Blackhawks on the road. Things went awry. If there's any saving grace here it would be that Andrei Vasilevskiy did not start due to an illness, giving Jonas Johansson the start who let in three goals on 19 shots. While that mess was going on, I had the Carolina game versus New York on and could not have been more impressed on how the Canes looked. If trading for Mikko Rantanen ($8,500) unlocks whatever ceiling Andrei Svechnikov ($6,400) has then I'm all in for the duration of the season, and tonight as well. I'm tossing Tuesday aside; this is Chicago on the road and if Carolina doesn't get there for me then I'll live to play another day. If I go anywhere here it would be that top line, particularly Svechnikov and Rantanen, and then I'd throw in a cheaper Carolina defenseman with them. You could even go as far adding in Taylor Hall ($3,700, revenge game?) or pay up a bit for Jackson Blake ($3,800). Blake in particular was a player that I liked for a short duration earlier this season because of how active he was on the power play and feel okay about adding him in if you are looking to get more Carolina exposure in your lineup. There's no question that this club is going to be a popular play tonight, so in that case going over the field on 'Canes players may not be such a bad call and if Carolina plays the way they did Tuesday, then you could be setting yourself up in a great spot.
Washington Capitals
I caught a little bit of the Capitals game Tuesday against the Flames where the announcer mentioned following Washington's first goal of the game that the Caps lead the league in opening goals. Put that little nugget in the memory bank. I like the Capitals here on this slate going up against another run-and-gun team in Ottawa, and if I'm playing the Caps I may go up to that top line. Alex Ovechkin ($7K) is down in price and can match him with Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson who are both at $4,900 and are all correlated on the power play. Strome would be the one I may consider leaving off as I might look elsewhere for my center tonight, but any top line that's fully correlated, I have to give a nod to. The top line is also at a price point to where if I'm building my lineup here, I can mix them in with another mid-priced stack, or even a group of one-off players I wanted to use the Capitals as an anchor stack for tonight's slate. Outside of Carolina, there are not too many lines or spots tonight that I'm considering in single-entry with Washington on that short list. This is also a Capitals club with the best goal differential in the past 30 days, giving me one more reason to want to add them into the mix tonight.
Edmonton Oilers
Alright, let's talk this out here for the Oilers. I feel like we haven't had a tried and true, Connor McDavid ($9,500)-and-the top-line-for-Edmonton-nukes-the-slate night. I'm leaning into tonight potentially be the night but if they're going to get there, then I would imagine it would be on the power play. The Red Wings in the last month do have good scoring stats, but most of that is inflated by their success earlier in the month. I've looked at every which stat in the month to try and be sold on the Edmonton power play, and while they've been middle of the road by most measures, the one aspect that's standing out to me is that Detroit's penalty kill hasn't been great going back 30 days. Maybe this is just all fear of missing out, but why do I feel like this is an Edmonton top line night? Between the 'Canes, Vegas Golden Knights, and Edmonton as home favorites for this slate, I feel good about Edmonton getting there in single-entry with price being the only thing prohibiting me from going in. In three max and above, you could use Edmonton with a couple different filler options but in single entry I'd want to feel confident about just who I'm putting with them. You can add in some Seattle Kraken in a good spot, or even go back to Anaheim, but for me this may be a game-time decision as I build my lineup.
Defensemen
Zach Werenski is back on the slate, and it got me thinking, who is the defensemen that gets priced up higher than him and do we see that happen this season? Maybe Quinn Hughes gets up that high or if Cale Makar goes on a heater for a week, he ends up higher priced, but for now Werenski sits at the top at $8,600. You can save yourself a couple grand and drop to Evan Bouchard at $6,600 or even further down and play either my guy Jake Walman at $6,200 or Josh Morrissey at $6K. Jakob Chychrun was on about a month-long run of 10-point nights, followed by a single-digit night, pattern and has gone two games since his last double-digit DK performance. I like him in Capitals stacks with 13 points this month with four coming on the man advantage. Seth Jones for Chicago is going to play a bunch of minutes at $4,800 and I have been so impressed with him. I, for one, would think that a club should be calling the 'Hawks right now and be open and willing to trade and take on his entire salary. No bad ideas in a groupthink, you guys. Jaccob Slavin sitting at $4,300 is likely a lock for my eventual Carolina builds and do also like Alexander Romanov at $4,200. Neal Pionk is only $3,700 tonight which is catching my eye, and that's a discount for what he could potentially bring to a lineup and don't mind him at a cheap price. Going down even further, Drew Doughty is back for the Kings at $3,500 where he is now running the Kings top power play unit. For a cheaper(ish) defenseman I have been rolling with Brayden McNabb lately and he is down at $3,300.
Goalies
If I'm paying up it's for either Vegas goaltender at $8,400 going up against the Blue Jackets but for me I'm in the middle somewhere. Connor Hellebuyck going into Boston is priced nicely at $7,800 and every time Hellebuyck is on the slate there's real shutout potential. I could see going to either Anaheim goaltender at $7,300 is fine and might go a little overlooked because it's Anaheim on a 10-game slate.
Good luck tonight everybody!
