Welcome back! Fantasy is about to go dark for the Four Nations. It's going to be very interesting how clubs handle their rosters this weekend and coming back after the tournament as well. I predict we see more players miss games this weekend without much explanation. It's been a weird season, you guys.
The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)
Tony DeAngelo, D, New York Islanders (Rostered in 26% of ESPN leagues, 50% Fantrax, 33% Yahoo) – The second that the Islanders brought in DeAngelo, I knew that meant that Noah Dobson's injury was serious and expected him to miss an extended amount of time, if not the rest of the regular season altogether. Sometimes though, injuries open up options for fantasy, which is what we have here on the Islanders blueline.
I was a little skeptical about bringing in DeAngelo but so far, the production is there as he's gotten a point in four of the six games that he's appeared in so far. I was unsure just what his role was going to be, but it looks as though he's going to get top d-pair minutes and top power play responsibilities. If Dobson does return, I'd expect that DeAngelo's role goes right to the second pairing, but I do think that he would still see power-play time on the Islanders second unit. The Islanders are funny because most of the time I want a defenseman that skates on the power play, but their numbers on the man advantage aren't as stellar as others out there, so as long as the even-strength numbers are good, then I'm fine with rostering someone from New York.
The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)
Pavel Zacha, C/LW, Boston Bruins (Rostered in 14% of ESPN leagues, 52% Fantrax, 25% Yahoo) – If you were to rank of all the centers is the Atlantic Division, you'd probably have to go down a ways to get to Zacha, but I've had him circled for a while now, enough so to make him our Building Block this week.
Sometimes in fantasy, depth gets overlooked, and if I need a player to provide that for me, then Zacha ticks every box. He's eligible on some platforms at center or left wing, which gives me flexibility within my lineup, gets top line and top power-play minutes, and he plays alongside an elite winger in David Pastrnak. Pastrnak himself is on an absolute heater right now, and if he's going to taka Zacha along the ride with him, then I'll gladly take whatever assists come my way. Zacha has points in three of his last five games while also generating shots over the duration of the season with 102 SOG. I like this addition to any team for the long haul as a valuable piece that you can use to rotate in and out of your lineup. Odds are, he's available right now on your league's waiver wire.
The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)
Morgan Rielly, D, Toronto Maple Leafs (Rostered in 70% of ESPN leagues, 88% Fantrax, 71% Yahoo) – I drafted Rielly late in my league's draft and immediately he became the odd man out for my roster and has since been added and dropped in my league five times. Every season, there's that player in your league that gets passed around and for us one of the leading candidates is Rielly.
So, why the odd man out? He plays for Toronto, which is a great position to be in and he does skate around 22 minutes a night. The issue here is more where he's skating and that's on the Toronto second power-play unit. Toronto has gone with a five-forward power play for a while now and even at times when they've reverted back to a four forward/one defenseman formation, they have at times optioned for Oliver Ekman-Larsson in that role. I do still like Rielly if you're in a league where your waivers for defensemen are as bleak as mine, but for a starter in a lineup between another player, I would look for the power-play exposure.
The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)
Juuse Saros, G, Nashville Predators (Rostered in 78% of ESPN leagues, 95%, Fantrax, 95% Yahoo) – I'm pretty sure I've written about Saros already this season as an Anchor but then again, maybe I haven't? It's a long season. I may have written about Pekka Rinne and not even realized it.
I finally ripped the band-aid off in my league…I dropped Saros today. I'm going one goaltender right now (Connor Hellebuyck) and I've never gone with the 1G strategy before. I'm scared, but I couldn't take this anymore with Saros and odds are he's cost me a win or two so far this season. He has not won a start since January 18, which was against San Jose. What I could get from a forward or defensemen throughout the week is greater than anything from Saros so far this season. I'm so burned by this. I've been on a streak the past couple of seasons where my second goaltender turns out to be a dud. That's hockey, I guess. I might have tried to shop him around, but it is what it is. He's our Anchor for the week.
Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)
This period runs through February 7 – February 13
NY Rangers – The Rangers have both the Penguins and Blue Jackets coming up on a back-to-back. This is just the right time to gather four points before the break.
Los Angeles – The Kings looked awesome the other night against Montreal, and although they have a tough task upcoming against the Stars, they'll also have a soft matchup coming up against the Ducks.
Nashville – They play the Hawks and the Sabres. Every indication should be that they win both of these games. I love them in theory but won't be surprised at all when they drop both of these matchups.
Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)
Colorado – The Avs are on the back end of a back-to-back going up against the Oilers. That's a tough task, they're a leave em for now.
Buffalo – The Sabres are in action just once more before the break. Again though, are we sure they can't beat Nashville? The numbers say otherwise. Buffalo is a Leave 'Em before the break.
Vegas – A 3-8-3 run for the Knights isn't encouraging, I think they'll be just fine for the long term but for now they're a stay away.
