DFS Saturday: Flames Top Line Could Pay Off

Good morning, everyone! Played two nights ago, won. Played last night, lost. The teeter totter of the NHL DFS season rolls on! This is a funny slate tonight because I actually more interest in the early games than the main slate, but nevertheless, we have to find something here that we like. A few of these teams played last night, which is always a little tougher to gauge, but let's see if we can find something on this slate that can win us some money.

Slate Preview:

Florida

Only the Islanders and Jets have a better record over the last ten games and lucky for us, those two clubs played last night, weirdly against each other. I really like Florida on this slate, but not the line that you may be thinking. If you want to play the Florida top line, I'm not going to say no, as they're in fine spot and have an elite center and wings. This goes for the second line as well, as Sam Bennett has been good lately and Matthew Tkachuk is never a bad DFS play, especially on a night where we're going to get 16 shots of him and his brother on the ice together. You guys know that they're related? If you didn't, you'll never guess who their dad is!

Really, where my interest lies is on the third line of Anton Lundell ($4,500), Evan Rodrigues ($4,100) and Eetu Luostarinen ($3,100). They have good numbers for a third line over the last three games and there's not too much on the Ottawa side that worries me, both in net and by their forward groupings. This line might be a tad expensive to be called a true filler, but the way that I plan on building tonight might be adding a cheap line around a few expensive one-offs and go from there. Florida has been taking a lot of penalties over the last ten games, but then again so has Ottawa, so not super concerned there. I'm never going to say no to going to the top line of any group. For me this could an excellent depth spot on a night where there's going to be plenty of routes to get into the cash.

Buffalo

The Sabres are going up against the Predators, who I just watched get pumped last night versus the Blackhawks. I don't know why the Hawks seem to do well lately against this Nashville club, but this game was a blowout which I'm sure ended a lot of people's DFS night, as Nashville is always a popular play. I say, let them be a popular play again here tonight, I'll be on the Buffalo side. We saw Juuse Saros in net last night, which means tonight will likely be Justus Annunen. While that might be a slight upgrade, it's nothing that outright worries me to stay away.

If this was a game where I 100% knew if Tage Thompson was playing in at $7,900, I'd have more interest, but we have to build as if he may be out again tonight. What I might do is build as though he's in, wait for confirmation, and then if I need to switch go with a William Nylander ($7,900) or Artemi Panarin ($7,700) one off and go from there. I will say, even if Tage is out, you can still go with say an Alex Tuch ($6,800) and Rasmus Dahlin ($6,400) and go from there.

When I was in college back in the good ole days when the Hawks were awesome, my good buddy and I would look over every game on a slate at breakfast and if there was one that he was sure would be a messy game, he would call it out as a "sludge match." This might be a sludge match here tonight, but I've seen enough of this Nashville club to want to get at them in some way. Really, you might not even need to go full out on Buffalo to get there either. Just getting on the scoresheet for Dahlin is going to put you on an excellent path to the money.

Calgary

I'm here again to tell you all about the Calgary Flames. Don't laugh. Well, okay sure, maybe you can. I've watched the past two Flames games and watched the top line somehow not get on the board against Toronto but then get there against the Avalanche. Both of those clubs are probably in the top five or at least top ten in the NHL right now, so I'm going to stay away because Seattle is in town?

I don't care about power-play correlation here because the Flames change that up more than wind direction. Okay maybe not that much, but you get the idea. I love this top line and until my eyes tell me not to play them, I'm going back. Give me Nazem Kadri at $7,200, Jonathan Huberdeau at $6,300, and Joel Farabee down at $4,800. This is a night where you have teams in good spots, don't get me wrong, but almost all of them played last night. This is the one group that didn't, and if this top line can get on the sheet again tonight, then I'm happy to move up if some of the chalk spots go dark. It's a risky play, I get it, but I have interest. This is a weird slate and on those weird slates, weird things happen. I'll take one Calgary top line to go, please.

Defensemen:

This is a good time for a Zach Werenski one off at $7,300 and I'll be happy if he goes off and I roster him but bummed at the same time because I'm going up against him in fantasy right now. Went over Dahlin already and I have my lineup build started and guess what, he's in it. Thomas Chabot is catching my eye at $5,400 and if I have enough to get to him, I might throw him into my lineup as well. In the low $5K ranger, Jake Walman is always solid at $5,200, and I just like rostering Colton Parayko who is at the same price. Kris Letang at $5,100 is fine and had a good game last night against the Rangers last night. At least I think he did, as that game was background noise while I cooked dinner. Gustav Forsling for Florida is fine at $4,400 with any Florida stack, and going down to $4,200 I like Filip Hronek for Vancouver going up against the Leafs. For a punt option tonight, I don't mind Adam Boqvist for the Islanders down at $3K.

Goalies:

Jonathan Quick is expensive at $8,400 but is in a great matchup going up against a beat-up Columbus team. Darcy Kuemper is also in a great spot at $8,200 going up against the Ducks. I usually do not pay up for goaltender but these two are in good positions tonight and don't want to have a goaltender sink my lineup. This is my last chance to play DFS before the break, just let me have this, DK. If you're not playing Florida, I do like Linus Ullmark at $7,300, and I could be talked into either Ducks goaltender at $7,200.

Good luck tonight everybody!
