About a month ago we took a look at some percent rostered numbers as a way to try to highlight some players who might be free agents in some leagues. Today we are going to take a page out of that book but really focus on these last few weeks of the regular season. The idea is to look at some players that might be valuable adds for managers in this last stretch of the season whether you are trying to secure that bye or a playoff spot.
First up we need to take a quick look at the schedule for the remaining weeks. Teams have a range of 10-13 games over the course of this period. What also matters though is the number of off day games. In many leagues it isn't enough to have a guy on a team who plays a lot, you need a guy who plays on off days since your lineup may already be full on those busy days. If we look at off day games, we have a range of one to six. The focus for today then will be on teams who have a high volume of overall games, and who have a lot of off day games.
The following is a brief table that lists the teams as well as their total number of games and their off days.
Team | Total Games | Off Days |
ANA | 13 | 6 |
LA | 12 | 6 |
NYR | 13 | 6 |
VAN | 12 | 6 |
WPG | 12 | 6 |
Anaheim and the Rangers are clearly good teams to roster from. We can pull from the Dobber reports to help us take a look at players on those teams. We are going to use the Percent Rostered report, export it, and pull a few columns. For the table below we are looking at some basic player information (name, position, team, and percent rostered) and then some general player stats (points and shots per game, total time on ice, and power-play time on ice). All of the players listed below are less than 50 percent rostered on Yahoo, and are organized by their production using Yahoo's standard scoring format.
Name | Pos | Team | Yahoo Rostered % | PTS/G | SOG/G | TOI | PPTOI |
TROY TERRY | R | ANA | 22 | 0.80 | 2.43 | 18:57 | 3:01 |
JACKSON LACOMBE | D | ANA | 30 | 0.51 | 2.09 | 20:52 | 1:52 |
JACOB TROUBA | D | ANA | 37 | 0.23 | 1.58 | 20:31 | 0:06 |
MASON MCTAVISH | C | ANA | 12 | 0.56 | 2.17 | 16:24 | 2:25 |
WILL CUYLLE | R | NYR | 29 | 0.53 | 1.84 | 14:48 | 0:42 |
First up is Troy Terry. He has been mentioned a couple of times in this column and this seems as good a time as any to grab him. I think we can all grant that his production overall isn't particularly exciting, but he is on a 65-point pace, getting three minutes of power-play time, and almost 19 minutes a night on average (both are career highs). He had a rough couple of games right before the break, but prior to that for about a month he was on fire putting up 14 points in 13 games. He might not win you a week, but make sure he isn't better than the bottom player on your roster going into these last few weeks.
Going into the season the question on defense was will it be Pavel Mintyukov or Olen Zellweger who gets a shot on the top power play? Turns out for most of the season it has been Jackson Lacombe. Zelleweger has also gotten a few turns and occasionally Anaheim has ended up with five forwards out there, but for most of the season, and most of that last month Lacombe has had more than 50 percent of the team's power play much more often than not. He is not exactly killing it with peripherals, but is shooting at least twice per game a putting up some occasional blocks.
Jacob Trouba is clearly on this list for his peripherals and we did a deeper dive on him last week. He, and Radko Gudas who was just off this list are much more valuable in leagues that count hits. The standard scoring for Yahoo doesn't so they are a little lower in those formats. Either are a solid choice though if your league counts hits and blocks.
The bad news is that Mason McTavish has been fairly unimpressive over the course of the season. The good news is that McTavish has been on the top power-play unit with Troy Terry, and over the last month has picked things up significantly. He has nine points in his last ten games, and has been shooting three times per game. He is a little bit more of a risk than Terry, but worth a look.
Finally, we have someone over in New York in Will Cuylle. The Rangers are a much higher rostered team in general so the pickings are pretty slim. If this was earlier in the season this would be a hard recommendation to go and get Cuylle. He had been having a nice run on a third line, hitting, shooting, and scoring. Since just before the holidays, though, Cuylle has been ice cold. Five points in his last 23 games including a 13-game pointless streak. He is still hitting so if that plus a shot and a half a game are helpful consider him. Otherwise, it might be safe to leave this one be.
The remaining teams on our list include LA, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. These are the top players as ranked by Yahoo's standard scoring, who are less than 35 percent rostered.
Name | Pos | Team | Yahoo Rostered % | PTS/G | SOG/G | TOI | PPTOI |
BRANDT CLARKE | D | L.A | 33 | 0.49 | 1.90 | 16:46 | 2:04 |
COLE PERFETTI | R | WPG | 28 | 0.61 | 1.73 | 15:06 | 1:44 |
CONOR GARLAND | R | VAN | 30 | 0.60 | 2.18 | 18:59 | 3:04 |
ALEX LAFERRIERE | R | L.A | 21 | 0.61 | 2.43 | 16:42 | 2:04 |
VLADISLAV NAMESTNIKOV | C | WPG | 12 | 0.56 | 1.21 | 14:55 | 1:21 |
Brandt Clarke makes the list because of the stats he has already accumulated. With the return of Drew Doughty, Clarke has lost the top power play and is getting 13-14 minutes a night. I think folks are safe to leave him be.
Cole Perfetti is very interesting. He did have almost a month where he only put up two points over the course of 14 games, but has nine points in his last eight. His time on ice numbers have evened out a bit through that period too. He is getting 15-17 minutes of overall ice time, and 30-45 percent of the team's power-play. Prior to that it was 12 minutes with zero power play one night and 18 minutes with two minutes of power-play the next. He has been lining up with Nikolaj Ehlers at even strength so we will take that.
Conor Garland was also very useful earlier in the season getting a prime top power-play spot to go along with his top six spot. Recently he has been on a decidedly third line, and without J.T. Miller anymore there are fewer strong lines to be a part of anyway. Vancouver seems to be splitting up Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser, so honestly who knows where the best place to be is right now. Any way you look at it, Garland is not in it. He has eight points in his last 28 games and I would also leave Garland be at the moment.
This one is actually pretty straight forward. Alex Laferriere has had a bit of an inconsistent season and probably won't be amazing down the stretch, but he has been shooting, hitting, getting top power-play deployment recently, and playing on a decent even strength line. I am certainly interested in taking a look to see if he could provide more games than the bottom of my roster.
Vladislav Namestnikov is on that line with Ehlers and Perfetti, and is on the second power play. He has nine points in his last eight games, but was very quiet before that. Namestnikov is always a bit of gamble. He can go on very solid runs for periods of time and then go silent. He is on a run now so with a good schedule might be worth a stream, but just anticipate that he will probably go quiet again.
That is all for this week. Do your part to support organizations working to make hockey for everyone.
