Welcome back in everyone to the world's most trusted weekly salary cap article. All is quiet right now before the NHL trade deadline which I'm hoping for content's sake is electric. Last season we had a fun deadline day and then Vegas just goes and pulls of a Tomas Hertl trade right before the bell rang. Let's do that again!
For this week we had a small move take place that I think could lead to something bigger down the road along with a signing.
The Ducks acquired Ville Husso from the Red Wings for future considerations.
Before diving in here, if you're one of those people out there that customize a sweater with "future considerations" as the name, you win trade deadline every season. I like how teams give a sendoff Tweet for future considerations and accommodate it on future consideration's contributions to the club. Well done on that, Anaheim.
Start off with the Ducks on this one, and if I'm a Wings fan they're now my second favorite team for the time being. Anaheim just did Detroit a big-time favor in taking Ville Husso off of Detroit's books, which relieves the Wings of $3.6M in total for a goaltender that was in the AHL. For the Ducks, they do get goaltending depth in their organization in this deal, as while Husso has not been great at the NHL level this season with a 1-5-2 record, he has been good for the AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids (underrated very fun Midwest city). This helps the Ducks in the long-term if Husso can become a serviceable NHL backup behind Lukas Dostal, and in the short-term with John Gibson currently on IR. This is the part of the show where I tell you all that John Gibson is coming back this season, let the trade rumors ensue.
For the Wings, the salary that will now be available to them only implies that they are going to be looking to add at the deadline. Husso carried a $4.75M cap hit in total salary but while in the minors that number goes down to the $3.6M number I referenced earlier since $1.15 is saved if he is not up at the NHL level. This is where future considerations become something as for a team to take on that as either a cap hit or dead cap hit, a pick would be rewarded and my guess is that it could be maybe a third rounder, as the Ducks are taking on full salary with the percent of time left before the end of the regular season at the time of the deal. If I'm the Wings, now that I have some money to spend, I don't know if my area of need would be a position so-to-speak, but I would look for anything that will improve my even strength production as most of my success has come via the power play. Nothing wrong at all with a good unit on the man advantage but come playoffs the game is so much different to where I'd want to feel confident in whoever is going over the boards 5v5. I always like to give a fantasy take on any transaction as well, but my guess is that not too many of you are rostering Ville Husso right now and even if he comes up and gets a start for the Ducks at some point, I'd probably advise staying away in fantasy but for DFS I can see myself looking to roster him in addition to an expensive stack.
Vladislav Namestnikov – C – Winnipeg – 32 years old
Contract (extension): $6M – $3M AAV
Winners of 11 straight games, the Winnipeg Jets made a signing over the weekend and I have to say that this is one that I like. On Saturday the club announced that they have agreed to terms with center Vladislav Namestnikov on a two-year extension worth $6M in total. This is a deal you make every time, as the AAV and term-length are perfect for a player that will be going into his age-33 season next year.
I like Namestnikov as a player, and just going off of his point totals, he has improved in each of his last three seasons, while splitting time in Tampa before coming over to Winnipeg. This is a player that does a little bit of everything while playing along the Jets second line…that they use as a third line…sometimes. Namestnikov can go out on the PK, used on the man advantage, get in front of the net, etc., these are the types of players that clubs that go far in playoffs have all across their roster. For fantasy, my guess is that only the folks on Fantrax may be rostering him and I think that's perfectly fine in larger cap leagues.
