Last week we wrote about what each team in the Western Conference might do at the trade deadline. This week we will write about what each team in the West actually did.
I'm going to include trades that have been made since the beginning of 2025.
Prices were high in the days leading up to and on the deadline day, as it was clearly a seller's market.
Anaheim Ducks
March 6th, 2025 – Brian Dumoulin was traded to New Jersey for a 2025 2nd round pick and Herman Traff. The Ducks retained 50% of Dumoulin's salary.
Feb. 25th, 2025 – Ville Husso was acquired from the Detroit Red Wings for Future Considerations.
March 7th, 2025 – Oliver Kylington was acquired from the NY Islanders for Future Considerations.
The Ducks were fairly quiet and didn't trade Robby Fabbri or Brock McGinn, who are both set to become UFAs. The injury to John Gibson might have held them back from trading him.
They got great value for Dumoulin in the 2nd round pick and Traff who was a 3rd round pick in 2024. Traff is 19 years of age and has played 25 games in 2024-25 with HV71 of the SHL where he has produced three goals and four assists. By trading Dumoulin, it should give a regular role to Olen Zellweger and Pavel Mintyukov for the balance of the schedule.
Husso was a strange addition as he has a $4.75 million salary and Gibson was healthy when they got him, which leads one to think that trading Gibson was on the radar.
Kylington could slot in as the 6th or 7th defender on the Ducks as he struggled to get regular playing time in Colorado.
Calgary Flames
Jan. 30th, 2025 – The Flames acquired Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee from the Philadelphia Flyers for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2nd round pick in 2025 and a 7th round pick in 2028.
The Flames stood pat, as I thought they might. Frost (13-2-3-5 with Calgary) and Farabee (13-3-0-3) have both been a little inconsistent since joining the Flames and expectations for both shouldn't be too high in terms of production. They are an improvement in the forwards over Kuzmenko and Pelletier in the short-term and should be over the next three to four years.
Looking at the prices around the trade deadline, the Flames did well with what they paid.
Chicago Blackhawks
Jan. 24th, 2025 – Chicago traded Taylor Hall and Nils Juntorp for a 3rd round pick in 2025. Chicago also retained 50% of the salary of Mikko Rantanen. It seems like a very cheap price tag at what the deadline prices were for players like Hall and retaining $4.6 million in salary. They also threw in Juntorp, who was a 6th round pick in 2022. This trade was made January 24th, 2025.
March 1st, 2025 – Seth Jones was traded to the Florida Panthers along with a 4th round pick in 2024 for Spencer Knight and a conditional 1st round pick in 2026. Chicago retained $2.5 million annually for the balance of Jones's contract.
March 7th, 2025 – Craig Smith and Petr Mrazek were dealt to the Detroit Red Wings for Joe Veleno
March 7th, 2025 – A 5th round pick in 2026 was traded to the Utah Hockey Club for the contract of Hall of Famer Shea Weber, Victor Soderstrom and Aku Raty.
Surprisingly, Chicago held on to Patrick Maroon and Ryan Donato. I could see them re-signing Donato. He might have fetched a 1st round pick.
Trading Hall and the salary retention early might have cost them a round or two in draft picks as well.
Dumping Jones' salary was difficult and getting back a potential 1A starter in Knight could be a good move. The first-round pick in 2026 could be a late-round pick. Knight might be the young starter that Chicago can have in that position for the next few years. Drew Commesso will try to have something to say about that.
Acquiring Veleno over picks or prospects was a little questionable for both teams, as Veleno could play as high as the third line but has been in a fourth-line role with Detroit. Perhaps Chicago views Veleno as replacing Ryan Donato.
I'm not sure that Kyle Davidson had himself a good trade deadline or the month or two leading up to it. It looks like there were some assets left on the table.
Artyom Levshunov was called up on Sunday. He reminds me of Seth Jones a little and could eventually fill that role.
Colorado Avalanche
Jan. 24th, 2025 – Colorado traded Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for Martin Necas, Jack Drury, a 2nd round pick in 2025 and a 4th round pick in 2026.
March 1st, 2025 – Colorado traded Juuso Parssinen, Calvin De Haan, a 2nd round pick in 2025 and a 4th round pick in 2025 to the NY Rangers for Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey and Hank Kempf.
March 6th, 2025 – Colorado traded Calum Ritchie, a 1st round pick in 2026, a 3rd round pick in 2028 and Oliver Kylington to the NY Islanders for Brock Nelson and William Dufour.
March 7th, 2025 – Colorado traded Casey Mittelstadt, William Zellers and a 2nd round pick in 2025 to the Boston Bruins for Charlie Coyle and a 5th round pick in 2026.
March 7th, 2025 – Colorado traded Givani Smith to the Philadelphia Flyers for Erik Johnson.
I didn't see the Avalanche being this active after their trade on March 1st. They went out and got Brock Nelson and Charlie Coyle while bringing back Erik Johnson for another shot at the Stanley Cup.
Nelson and Coyle give Colorado a solid 2nd and 3rd line center. It could be argued that Colorado is a more rounded team after trading Rantanen, Mittelstadt and De Haan as regulars.
Giving up Ritchie and only having 4th and 7th round picks in 2025 could hurt, but not if they win the Cup or get close. They are swinging for the fences and why not?
Dallas Stars
February 1st, 2025 – Dallas traded a 1st round pick and a 4th round pick in 2025 to the San Jose Sharks for Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci.
March 7th, 2025 – Dallas traded Logan Stankoven, a 1st and 3rd round pick in 2026, a 3rd round pick in 2027 and a 1st round pick in 2028 to the Carolina Hurricanes for Mikko Rantanen.
The price for Granlund and Ceci was very cheap compared to prices in March.
Dallas surprised everyone by not only trading for Rantanen but getting him to agree to an eight-year $12 million AAV contract, which was allegedly less than what Colorado had offered. It wasn't cheap as they gave up two 1st round picks and Stankoven. Getting Rantanen makes what was one of the best top-nine forward groups in the NHL into the best top-nine.
Without Heiskanen, I'm not sure about the gamble, but their window is closing with some of their other players.
I thought they might add another defender, but perhaps the coaching staff thinks Lian Bichsel is ready for the NHL challenge.
Edmonton Oilers
March 4th, 2025 – The Oilers traded Max Wanner, a 2nd round pick in 2025 and a 4th round pick in 2026 to Boston, along with Shane Lachance to New Jersey for salary retention. From Boston, the Oilers received Trent Frederic, Max Jones and Petr Hauser.
March 7th, 2025 – Edmonton traded a 1st round pick in 2026 and Carl Berglund to the San Jose Sharks for Jake Walman.
The Oilers held pat in the goalie department but added Walman, Frederic and Max Jones.
They did well to add Frederic (if healthy) and Jones who should help bolster their bottom-six forwards, while Walman was an interesting, unexpected addition who didn't come cheap.
Walman played 24:40 in his debut with Edmonton and had an assist while being a plus three. Mattias Ekholm was out of the lineup, so Walman isn't expected to see that much ice time once Ekholm is back and healthy. Evan Bouchard played just 18:37.
Edmonton is better, but goaltending could still be an issue.
Los Angeles Kings
March 7th, 2025 – The Kings acquired Andrei Kuzmenko and a 7th round pick in 2025 from the Philadelphia Flyers for a 3rd round pick in 2027.
The Kings get an offense-only forward in Kuzmenko who did have 39 goals in 2022-23 with Vancouver. He will surely get chances in the top six with the Kings early, as well as PP time, but he will need to produce to stay there. He was an inexpensive offensive addition to the Kings’ forwards.
Minnesota Wild
March 1st, 2025 – The Wild traded a 2nd round pick in 2026 to the Nashville Predators for Gustav Nyquist.
March 6th, 2025 – The Wild traded Marat Khusnutdinov, Jakub Lauko and a 6th round pick in 2026 to the Boston Bruins for Justin Brazeau.
March 7th, 2025 – Minnesota traded Reese Johnson to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Future Considerations.
The price for Nyquist on March 1st was an early indication of where prices were going on March 7th.
The Wild gave up on Khusnutdinov to get Brazeau, who played just 7:11 in his first game with them. Perhaps the Wild see a player like they had in Jordan Greenway in Brazeau.
Nashville Predators
March 1st, 2025 – Gustav Nyquist was traded to the Minnesota Wild for a 2nd round pick in 2026.
March 5th, 2025 – Nashville traded Tommy Novak and Luke Schenn to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Michael Bunting and a 4th round pick in 2026.
March 7th, 2025 – Nashville traded Mark Jankowski to the Carolina Hurricanes for a 5th round pick in 2025.
Adding Bunting rather than prospects and/or picks was a strange addition to the roster, as I don't know if he can play in the top six on the Predators. They do shave over a million in cap space in 2025-26 and the $3.5 million that Novak had in 2026-27. Taking that into account, and if Bunting can put up 45-50 points in 2025-26, it's not a bad trade.
It is not time to blow this roster up. Not yet at least…
San Jose Sharks
February 1st, 2025 – The Sharks traded Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci to the Dallas Stars for a 1st round pick in 2025 and a 4th round pick in 2025.
March 5th, 2025 – San Jose traded Vitek Vanecek to the Florida Panthers for Patrick Giles.
March 5th, 2025 – San Jose traded a 5th round pick in 2028 to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Vincent Desharnais.
March 6th, 2025 – San Jose traded Nico Sturm and a 7th round pick in 2027 to the Florida Panthers for a 4th round pick in 2026.
March 7th, 2025 – San Jose traded Jake Walman to the Edmonton Oilers for a 1st round pick in 2026 (conditional) and Carl Berglund.
March 7th, 2025 – The Sharks traded Luke Kunin to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 4th round pick in 2025.
March 7th, 2025 – San Jose traded Fabian Zetterlund, Tristen Robins and a 4th round pick in 2025 to the Ottawa Senators for Zack Ostapchuk, Noah Gregor and a 2nd round pick in 2025.
The Sharks were busy and traded both their impending UFAs Kunin and Sturm, getting back two 4th round picks.
I'm not sure why they added Desharnais for a pick, as they might have picked him up on waivers if they were more patient.
Trading Walman was selling high, but I would have thought the price would be a tad higher.
Trading Zetterlund, who will probably score 20 goals for the second year in a row, is a little puzzling on paper, especially getting back Ostapchuk and Gregor who top out in the bottom-six.
It's easy to criticize Mike Grier as there are deals that he completes that just scream out for another pick or one-round better in return. Unfortunately for him, he's not dealing from a position of strength usually.
Seattle Kraken
March 5th, 2025 – The Kraken traded Yanni Gourde, Oliver Bjorkstrand, a 5th round pick in 2026 and Kyle Aucoin to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Mikey Eyssimont, a 1st round pick in 2026, a 1st round pick in 2027 and a 2nd round pick in 2025.
March 7th, 2025 – The Kraken traded Brandon Tanev to the Winnipeg Jets for a 2nd round pick in 2027.
March 7th, 2025 – Seattle traded Daniel Sprong to the New Jersey Devils for a 7th round pick in 2026.
I thought that Seattle would move Andre Burakovsky for sure, but they moved Bjorkstrand instead, who has $5.4 million remaining in 2025-26.
I thought Tanev's value was a 3rd round pick, but the Kraken managed to get a 2nd.
Ron Francis did well getting back two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks. Eyssimont fills the role of Tanev, so the Kraken lost two roster players in Gourde and Bjorkstrand in the short-term.
I included the Sprong trade as it's important to note the little gains of a GM. Francis got Sprong from the Vancouver Canucks for Future Considerations and turned Sprong into a free 7th round pick.
St. Louis Blues
January 27th, 2025 – The Blues traded Scott Perunovich to the NY Islanders for a 5th round pick in 2026.
The Blues let Radek Faksa and Ryan Suter get past the deadline without trading them as both are set to become UFAs. I thought that both could bring back 3rd or 4th round picks.
Utah Hockey Club
March 7th, 2025 – Utah traded Shea Weber, Victor Soderstrom and Aku Raty to the Chicago Blackhawks for a 5th round pick in 2026.
Utah re-signed Karel Vejmelka, Alex Kerfoot, Ian Cole and Olli Maatta on March 6th and 7th.
That left just Michael Carcone and Nick Bjugstad as impending UFAs that they did not trade.
Utah must feel that they have a chance next year to contend for at least a playoff spot. I wouldn't disagree.
Vancouver Canucks
January 31st, 2025 – Vancouver traded J.T. Miller, Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington to the NY Rangers for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini and a 1st round pick in 2025.
January 31st, 2025 – Vancouver traded Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais, Melvin Fernstrom and a 1st round pick in 2025 to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor.
March 6th, 2025 – Vancouver traded Carson Soucy to the NY Rangers for a 3rd round pick in 2025.
I was pretty confident that this management and ownership group wouldn't be sellers at the deadline. If they had traded Elias Pettersson or Brock Boeser, they would have made sure that they got roster players in return who could help them now, rather than picks and prospects who could help them later.
The Canucks have Quinn Hughes signed to the end of 2026-27 at which point he is set to become unrestricted. They have gone backwards in 2024-25, but they are going to do everything that they can to bandage the holes on the dam until 2026-27.
Vancouver was able to extend Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor, which makes that trade more of a bargain than if they were just rentals.
They were able to trade Soucy and give ice time to Elias Pettersson (D).
Vegas Golden Knights
March 6th, 2025 – Vegas traded Brendan Brisson and a 3rd round pick in 2025 to the NY Rangers for Reilly Smith.
Vegas brought back Reilly Smith who won the Stanley Cup with them in 2022-23. His role might be different in 2024-25, but the Golden Knights know him and trust his play on any line. It was a fairly cheap addition that improves their team now.
Brisson could be an NHL player, but it looks like he took a bit of a step back in 2024-25 with no points in nine NHL games with Vegas and just 19 points in 45 AHL games.
Winnipeg Jets
March 6th, 2025 – Winnipeg traded Kaapo Kahkonen to the Florida Panthers for Chris Driedger.
March 7th, 2024 – Winnipeg traded a 2nd round pick in 2026 and a 4th round pick in 2027 to Pittsburgh for Luke Schenn.
March 7th, 2024 – Winnipeg traded a 2nd round pick in 2027 to the Seattle Kraken for Brandon Tanev.
The Jets upgraded their bottom-six forwards with Tanev and their bottom defensive pairing with Schenn. Adding both was fairly expensive, but they should make the Jets a better team.
