Frozen Tools Forensics: The Waiver Wire and the Fantasy Stretch Run Including San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets

For the past several weeks we have been focusing on skater decisions at various positions. The goal was to find players you might want to add/drop during these do-or-die matchups (at least for leagues using a head-to-head format). With playoff matchups well underway we are going to focus this week on the remaining scheduled games. This is helpful for year-long leagues, or for those of your anticipating long playoff runs.

We don't always touch on schedules in this column as Dobber Hockey has Looking Ahead to cover that. But for this week we are going to use the schedule to define a couple of our parameters for player discussion. To get us started we are going to use the Schedule Planner, located under the Research tab in Frozen Tools. Like with the other reports we can set a custom date range, and given when this article comes out I am setting it starting on Friday, March 28th to the end of the season. I am further sorting that list, not just by games played, but by light days. Essentially, I want to know what teams are playing the most on days where your lineup might not already be full.

Here is the list of most remaining light day games.

In order to make this really useful we are also going to track down some players on these teams who might be available to support your playoff run. In order to do this, I ran the Percent Rostered report and then sorted by the teams with strong light day schedules.

Below is a chart that has basic player information (Name, position, team), as well as their point-per-game pace, and the percent rostered information. In order to make the list the player needed to be less than 50% rostered on Yahoo and 70% on Fantrax. Line combinations and point paces are as of March 27th.

Ryan Donato has been surging lately. Though he had a few pointless games prior to two, two-point outings on March 23rd and 26th, since January 18th Donato has put up 31 points in 27 games. He was also lining up on the top line and top power play as of practice on March 26th. Basically, if you have him available take a look because he is probably better than your bottom-rostered player.

Tyler Toffoli had a great run from the end of January through the beginning of March (13 points in 12 games), but had only two points in his last six games before his three-point Thursday night. He is getting good overall ice time even though he hasn't been on a line with Macklin Celebrini or Will Smith, but he has been on the top power play. Overall he is certainly an interesting stream and best case he gets back on track and is around point per game down the stretch, though he clearly has the ability to go pretty cold as well on an inconsistent San Jose Team.

Will Cuylle mostly makes this list on account of his early season scoring and his propensity for hitting. Though looking at the Rangers' most recent lines, he is benefiting a bit from their 'Top 9' strategy. On March 25th he lined up with Mikka Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, and got second power-play time. He was doing ok in February but is pointless in his last three games. Ultimately he could be a good depth add, especially with the hits and a decent number of shots.

Logan Stankoven has not been an immediate success in Carolina. The positives are he is on a second line and getting some power-play time. Unfortunately, it is the second power play, and he only has four points in his eight Carolina games. He is getting some shots so that is something, but for scoring I would look elsewhere.

Like Donato, Teuvo Teravainen has had some good runs with Chicago. For a while he was lining up with Donato and Iyla Mikheyev, so that was certainly a part of it. As of March 26th, Donato was replaced with Nick Foligno, which is definitely less interesting. Overall though Tervainen has four points in his last four games, 22 in his last 20, and is on the top power play. He is definitely worth an add if available.

William Eklund has that spot with Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini, has six points in his last five, as well as 17 points in 17 games since February 1st. Top line, top power play, with two shots per game. Again, easy call here, if he is available make sure you aren't carrying players who are doing worse than Eklund.

Taylor Hall is a bit of an interesting one. He has been on the third line in terms of ice time in Carolina, but on the top power play. He has peaked at over 19 minutes of overall ice on March 25th, plus has nine points in his last seven games. His initial run in Carolina at the end of February was a whole lot of nothing though. That seems to be the risk here. Hall is currently hot, but if past history is anything to go by it could all disappear at a moment's notice.

As a bonus I should note that Columbus is the only team that plays 12 total games over this stretch, though only three off night games. As far as availability is concerned, here are the guys that might be options for you.

As of their last game Boone Jenner was on a line with Kent Johnson and Adam Fantilli, while Dmitri Voronkov was on the top line with Sean Monahan and Kirill Marchenko. Both Boone Jenner and Kent Johnson were on the top power play so they are definitely interesting here. Mathieu Olivier is sort of a Cuylle-light with hits and random bouts of goal scoring, but is not currently in an ideal deployment situation.

That is all for this week.
