Ramblings: Boiling Hot Pasta; Jets Clinch Presidents’ Trophy; Calgary & Columbus Stay Alive (Apr 14)

Thomas Chabot is on some kind of heater right now. A goal and two assists on Sunday give him a five-game point streak, featuring a total of nine points. This late-season surge is helping him get back to the 45–50-point pace he's lived at for most of his career. That feat would be especially impressive this season considering he's seen much less power-play opportunity than years past.

Tim Stützle also had a three-point outing against the Flyers, scoring two goals including the game winner in overtime. He broke out of a concerning slump that featured just one point in his previous eight outings. Notably, familiar linemate Brady Tkachuk has been out injured for six of those eight contests. In terms of offense, Stützle is on pace for 77 points just like he was last year, but it's disappointing that he's averaging less than two shots per game after posting closer to three per game in his previous two campaigns.

Fabian Zetterlund was super snake-bitten early in his stint with the Senators. Although he was playing well, he posted just one point in his first 14 appearances with the team. Consistent effort is starting to pay off as he's up to three points in his last four games after scoring on Sunday.

24-year-old Shane Pinto hasn't had a great season overall, but he's finding great form just in time for the playoffs. Sunday's assist gives him eight points in his last nine games.

Speaking of young players elevating their game lately, after posting an assist against Ottawa, 23-year-old Bobby Brink is up to six points in seven games since John Tortorella was let go. Although the Flyers lost on Sunday, they boast an impressive 5-1-1 record since Brad Shaw took over as head coach.

The only player to register a point in Sunday's dance between the Devils and Islanders was Bo Horvat, who's now up to eight goals in his last 16 outings. He needs two goals in these final two games of the season to reach the 30-goal mark for a fourth-straight year.

After suffering a lower-body injury in Tuesday’s game against Nashville, Ilya Sorokin made his triumphant return Sunday, stopping all 25 shots New Jersey threw his way. Despite the shutout, Sorokin's 2024-25 campaign has been underwhelming as he ranks 16th in goals saved above expected. That's back-to-back years of subpar play as he ranked 29th in GSAx last year. Sure, his numbers are still above average, but they're a far cry from the level we saw in his first three years, where he established himself as one of the league's top talents in net.

Somebody turn the stove down because the pasta is boiling hot. With two assists on Sunday, David Pastrnak is on a nine-game point streak and a five-game multipoint streak. I can't even imagine where Boston's offense would be without the Czech superstar as his 104 points are almost double second place Morgan Geekie's 56. Not to take anything away from Geekie, who's having a career year. Geekie extended his goal streak to five games and has remarkably scored in 10 of his last 13 outings. He's on a 10-game point streak, during which he's racked up 18 points. Elias Lindholm, the third member of Boston's top trio, has also been in great form during this stretch as he boasts 10 points in his last 10 appearances. Through 154 minutes together this season, the Pastrnak-Lindholm-Geekie trio has outscored opponents 24-15, dominating in expected goals and high-danger scoring chances (via Natural Stat Trick).

22-year-old Fabian Lysell, the 21st overall pick of the 2021 draft, scored his first NHL goal in his 11th NHL game on Sunday. He made use of a strong pass from Pavel Zacha, who snapped a five-game point drought with two apples against Pittsburgh.

21-year-old Ville Koivunen continues to make the most of his first stint in the NHL, now up to five points in seven appearances as he's on a four-game point streak. He was producing at a high level in the AHL and has managed to carry that over to the big leagues thanks to favourable deployment in Pittsburgh's top six and top power play. He deserves a ton of credit for playing well and making the most of this opportunity.

Since Shayne Gostisbehere is sidelined with a back injury, Brent Burns has been skating on the Hurricanes' top power-play unit. He cashed in with a PP helper on Sunday and has three points in these past three games without Ghost.

It hasn't been a great season for Morgan Rielly but it was a great Sunday, as he racked up three assists against Carolina. He's on pace for just 42 points this season after pacing for 66 last year. His offensive output has suffered from a loss of power-play opportunity as the Leafs have been operating a five-forward top unit lately. Rielly has seen just 44% of Toronto's time with the man advantage this year after seeing 58% last season. He went from 0.28 PPP/game to 0.18.

Toronto's 'Core Four' was integral to victory Sunday as Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares all scored against the Canes. With an assist, Mitch Marner is just one point away from 100 on the season – which would be a career high. He has two more games to do it. The 27-year-old forward has posted a hundred-point pace for a fifth-straight season, just remarkably consistent and impressive production for a player who's often on the receiving end of amplified criticism.

With the playoffs just around the corner, Carolina has picked the worst time to flounder. After Sunday's loss, they've dropped five of their last six games, surrendering 24 goals during this span.

Columbus kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a win over Washington on Sunday. The Blue Jackets would need to win both of their remaining games, but they're up against non-playoff teams in the Flyers and Islanders. The bigger ask will be for Montreal to not pick up a single point in its next two games, against Chicago and Carolina. Monday's clash between Chicago and Montreal – which could be Ivan Demidov's NHL debut – will be an incredibly important game for the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Adam Fantilli led Columbus to victory on Sunday with two goals, including the game winner. The 20-year-old forward is up to 30 goals in his sophomore season, with five goals in his last four appearances. He's been showing us why he was drafted third overall in 2023.

Fantilli benefited from an exquisite pass from Kent Johnson on Sunday, shown below. KJ is another integral piece of the youth movement that has Columbus battling for a playoff spot till the very end. Drafted fifth overall in 2021, the 22-year-old forward has 10 points in his last eight games and is pacing for 70 points on the season.

James van Riemsdyk has benefitted from riding shotgun beside Fantilli and Johnson lately. JVR has five points in his last three games.

Every good team has some established veterans to guide the youth, and Sean Monahan is one such vet for Columbus. It's remarkable how he hasn't missed a beat since returning from a wrist injury that kept him sidelined for two and a half months. Monahan had 41 points in 41 games pre-injury and has 13 in 11 post-injury.

24-year-old Jet Greaves, who struggled in limited action earlier in the year, has been excellent lately. Greaves stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced Sunday, and has allowed just six goals over his last five starts.

In stark contrast to Greaves, Charlie Lindgren continues to struggle. Sunday marked his seventh-straight start with a sub .895 save percentage. Washington's going to need a healthy Logan Thompson if they want to go far in the postseason. Fortunately, Thompson has started skating on his own as he works his way back from an upper-body injury.

After sitting out of Saturday's game for load management purposes, Alex Ovechkin returned to the lineup for Sunday's rematch with Columbus and scored Washington's only goal of the game, assisted by his modern-day partner-in-crime Dylan Strome.

With Washington losing on Sunday, Winnipeg clinched the Presidents' Trophy. They sport an impressive 55-22-4 record, rank first in goals against per game (2.33) and fourth in goals for per game (3.37). Although it's been an incredible campaign for the Jets, they entered Sunday's battle with Edmonton severely undermanned. Nikolaj Ehlers was unavailable after sustaining a leg injury when he collided with a linesman during Saturday's game, but Josh Morrissey, Neal Pionk, Adam Lowry and Connor Hellebuyck were also given the night off to rest. In all fairness, the Oilers were also missing a long list of key players as Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Mattias Ekholm, and Jake Walman were all out injured.

With both teams missing key players, it was the Oilers that battled adversity better, outshooting Winnipeg 39-18 and taking the game 4-1.

Alex Iafallo scored the lone goal for Winnipeg. Iafallo has benefitted from extra opportunity while Gabe Vilardi is out injured, taking Vilardi's place on the team's top line. Iafallo was skating 12:32 per game before Vilardi got injured but is up 18 minutes a night since. He has seven points in 10 games without Vilardi and is currently on a four-game point streak.

Roughly a month away from his 40th birthday, Corey Perry continues to be an important source of depth scoring for Edmonton. Sunday's goal was his 18th of the campaign. A certain 39-year-old in Washington may have warped perceptions about goal-scoring longevity, but Perry's continued effectiveness is worth recognizing.

Speaking of 'depth' scoring, the Oilers have finally been getting offense from Viktor Arvidsson lately. After scoring on Sunday, Arvidsson has five goals in his last eight games.

Evan Bouchard gets a lot of criticism for the defensive side of his game, but his offense has been consistent lately. Since the beginning of March, Bouchard has found the scoresheet in 17 of the 21 games he's played.

Continuing the theme of consistent offense, captain Connor McDavid extended his point streak to 16 games after tallying two assists on Sunday. He has nine points in three games since returning from an eight-game injury absence.

Connor Brown has benefited from skating beside his fellow Connor lately. Sunday's goal gives Brown four goals in three games since McDavid returned to the lineup.

Alex Tuch, who leads Sabres' forwards in ice time this season, scored his 35th goal of the campaign on Sunday. Tuch has 19 goals in his last 28 games, tied with Ovechkin for the league-lead since February 4th.

JJ Peterka extended his point streak to five games with an assist against Tampa. The 23-year-old forward is rounding out an impressive breakout campaign, pacing for 72 points over 82 games.

Rasmus Dahlin has been in excellent form lately. Two assists on Sunday give him 16 points in his last 12 games. There are only four skaters in the league with more points than Dahlin during this stretch.

This game – a 7-4 loss for Buffalo – was a microcosm of their season, strong offense overshadowed by an inability to keep the puck out of their net. The Sabres rank 7th in the league with 3.25 goals per game but rank 29th in the league with 3.49 goals against per game. Not only did the Sabres lose this game, they lost Owen Power to a pretty serious looking leg injury that's expected to keep him out a 'while'.

Three points against Buffalo brought Nikita Kucherov to the top of the NHL's scoring race with 119 points. Not to be outdone, Brandon Hagel had three points of his own to reach 90 points on the year and jump up to #10 in the NHL's scoring race.

Jake Guentzel scored two goals on Sunday to reach the 40-goal mark for the third time in his career.

24-year-old rookie Gage Goncalves, who has seen some looks beside Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel lately (but not so much on Sunday), managed two assists against Buffalo, giving him six points in his last five games.

Tampa's win was slightly dampened by an afternoon injury update on Oliver Bjorkstrand, who's said to be out week-to-week. With Bjorkstrand unavailable, Conor Geekie stepped into the lineup and had a pretty eventful game, tallying a goal, four shots, four hits, and two blocks through 12 minutes and 40 seconds of action. Geekie, who was drafted 11th overall in 2022, had 20 points in 24 AHL games this season.

Like Columbus, Calgary kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5-2 victory over San Jose on Sunday. The team got two goals from Yegor Sharangovich, who's up to four goals in his last three outings. They also got two assists from Jonathan Huberdeau, who had been cold prior to Sunday with just one point in his previous eight appearances. Adam Klapka was the third and final Flame to tally two points on Sunday.

Klapka skated very limited minutes in Calgary's bottom six early in the season and understandably didn't have much offense to show for it. However, he's seeing more opportunity beside Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri lately, which has led to six points in his last eight appearances. Klapka is a monster in leagues that track hits, boasting 3.45 per game this year.

With a goal on Sunday, 22-year-old Matt Coronato is up to a five-game point streak and has scored in four of his last five outings. Drafted 13th overall in 2021, Coronato is not afraid to put pucks on net, and that's why he has 24 goals this season. Coronato has been a key piece of Calgary's second line with Blake Coleman and Mikael Backlund, who also found the scoresheet Sunday and have been in strong offensive form lately. Despite starting more of their shifts in the defensive zone than the offensive zone, the Coleman-Backlund-Coronato trio has thoroughly outplayed their opposition, outscoring opponents 27-14 (via Natural Stat Trick).

Dustin Wolf stood tall, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced. The 23-year-old rookie netminder has performed admirably with a pressure-filled and heavy workload, posting a save percentage of .912 or better in five of his last seven starts.

Tyler Toffoli had a big night against one of his former teams, racking up a goal, assist and seven shots against the Flames. He reached the 30-goal mark for a third-straight year, remarkably playing for four different teams during this stretch.

Colorado entered their regular season finale against Anaheim without numerous regulars. Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin were both sidelined with lower-body injuries – likely minor ones that they would have been able to play through if the game had higher stakes. They joined Nathan MacKinnon, Devon Toews, Cale Makar, Jonathan Drouin, and Ross Colton, who were already on the shelf.

Despite being underpowered, the Avalanche orchestrated an impressive third-period comeback victory over Anaheim, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 victory.

Charlie Coyle led the way with a goal and two assists, extending his point streak to six games. It had been a rough season for him prior to this stretch, but that's a trade-deadline acquisition that could prove brilliant for Colorado. Coyle has produced in the playoffs before and is heating up at the perfect time.
