Fantasy Take: Anaheim Ducks Hire Joel Quenneville

When the Anaheim Ducks fired head coach Greg Cronin after the conclusion of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, there were instantly rumours that this would be a landing spot for Joel Quenneville. There had been rumours that Quenneville was in the running for any number of coaching positions, as has been the case since his reinstatement to the league this past July, but this time, the rumours were founded as the Anaheim Ducks made it official on Thursday afternoon, hiring Quenneville to be their new coach:

Quenneville's reinstatement this past July was due to his role in covering up the sexual abuse of prospect Kyle Beach during the 2010 Playoffs. The above statement from Anaheim General Manager Pat Verbeek mentions that Quenneville was not fully aware of the severity of the abuse. It should be mentioned that Quenneville was involved in a meeting during the 2010 playoffs for this specific reason. Also, weeks after that meeting, after Brad Aldrich had already resigned from the organization due to the abuse allegations, Quenneville wrote a positive performance evaluation of Aldrich (also contained on page 19 in the report linked above).

According to the on-ice coaching impacts at HockeyViz, Quenneville teams typically push the pace. Over the final 25 games of the regular season, Anaheim was 14th in the league by expected goals-for per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, ranking fifth by actual goals scored at that strength. The two issues facing the Ducks are team defence and the power play. Whether he can do either, we'll see, but Anaheim has a very good young core that should be on its ascent. Fixing that power play would go a long way to seeing large across-the-board fantasy value boosts for key players like Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier.
