The Wild West – Fourth Quarter Takeaways by Team

Grant Campbell

2025-06-09

This week, we will examine each team in the Western Conference and review some interesting (to me) statistical lines from the last 30 or so games of the regular season. Some of these may carry forward into 2025-26, or not.

Anaheim Ducks

Mason McTavish (F) – In his last 31 games, he had 10 goals and 16 assists (69-point pace) on 82 SOG (2.65/g). He won 206 faceoffs during that stretch, which was good for a 52% faceoff percentage.

Leo Carlsson (F) – Led the Ducks with 28 points in the last 31 games (74-point pace) and was a plus 11 with 25 of those points coming at even strength.

Cutter Gauthier (F) – Led the Ducks with 12 goals in his last 31 games and added 10 assists (32-goal and 58-point pace) on 86 SOG (2.77/g).

Troy Terry (F) – Had just 16 points in his last 30 games (44-point pace), with just five goals on 72 SOG (2.4/g). This might be an indication of the changing of the guard from Terry and Zegras to Carlsson, McTavish and Gauthier. It's inevitable.

Isac Lundestrom (F) – Went goalless with just six assists in his last 31 games. He was also a minus-14 and had a GF% of 36.8.

Calgary Flames

Nazem Kadri (F) – Led the Flames with 18 goals and 33 points in his last 32 games (46-goal and 85-point pace) on 115 SOG (3.59/g). Seven of those goals and 12 points were on the power play.

Mackenzie Weegar (D) – Had 22 points in his last 31 games (71-point pace) with 11 of those points on the power play. He averaged 25:19 per game and had 88 hits and 84 blocks as well. One would think that the quarterback role is Weegar's to lose in 2025-26, even with Zayne Parekh on the cusp.

Rasmus Andersson (D) – Had 12 points in his last 31 games (32-point pace) and was minus-28. The next worst Flame during those 31 games was at minus-eight.

Morgan Frost (F) – In a combined last 32 games between Calgary and Philadelphia, Frost had just three goals and 12 points (31-point pace) on 58 SOG (1.81/g).

Joel Farabee (F) – In 31 games between Calgary and Philadelphia, Farabee posted three goals and three assists (16-point pace) on 52 SOG (1.68/g).

The Flames will need more from Frost and Farabee moving forward, and have a free agency decision with Andersson.

Chicago Blackhawks

Ryan Donato (F) – The pending UFA had 16 goals and 17 assists in his last 31 games (42 goals and 87-point pace) on 74 SOG and a 21.6 shooting percentage. Donato had never had more than 16 goals or 31 points in a full season before.

Connor Bedard (F) – Bedard had eight goals and 22 points in his last 31 games (58-point pace) on 75 SOG (2.42/g). Bedard has improved in the face-off circle as he won 46.2 percent in those games compared to his career average of 38.5.

Teuvo Teravainen (F) – Led Chicago with 20 assists in his last 31 games (53 assist pace) and added four goals.

Ilya Mikheyev (F) – Had 11 goals and 19 points in his last 31 games (29-goal and 50-point pace). He had 59 SOG (1.9/g), with none of those points coming on the powerplay.

It will be interesting to see which defender will be given the keys to the power play with Seth Jones gone. It should come down between (Alex Vlasic, Sam Rinzel, Kevin Korchinski or Artyom Levshunov in 2025-26.

Colorado Avalanche

Cale Makar (D) – Makar had 11 goals and 35 points in his last 27 games (33-goal and 106-point pace) on 91 SOG (3.37/g), with 12 of those points coming with the man advantage.

Martin Necas (F) – Had 10 goals and 23 points in his last 26 games (31-goal and 72-point pace) with 14 of those points on the power play.

Sam Malinski (D) – Had four goals and 10 points in his last 26 games (32-point pace) while averaging 16:47 per game. He also added 18 hits and 39 blocks. Malinski could be a sleeper in 2025-26.

Dallas Stars

Roope Hintz (F) – Hintz became a passer in his last 29 games with six goals and 26 assists on 51 SOG (1.76/g). The two-time 37-goal scorer finished with 28 goals in 2024-25.

Wyatt Johnston (F) – Johnston led the Stars down the stretch with 19 goals in his last 31 games (50-goal pace), but he did shoot 26.8% on 71 SOG (2.29/g). Nine of those goals were on the power play.

Thomas Harley (D) – With Miro Heiskanen out of the lineup, Harley had 26 points in his last 29 games (73-point pace) and played 74.7% of the time on the power play, where he had 12 points during that stretch. One would think that Harley deserves an extended stretch as the quarterback after putting up eight more points in 18 playoff games, even with Heiskanen back for eight of those games.

Jason Robertson (F) – Had 16 goals and 15 assists in his last 31 games (42-goal and 82-point pace) on 78 SOG (2.52/g). After 46 goals in 2022-23, he hasn't scored more than 35 since.

Edmonton Oilers

Vasily Podkolzin (F) – He had 109 hits in his first 51 games as an Oiler, which was his career-high to that point. In his 31 games after that, he added 100 more hits, and through 17 playoff games, 77 more. He's become a hitting machine with 177 hits in his past 48 games (3.7/g).

Zach Hyman (F) – Hyman is a perfect example of a player who can't or won't play the same style in the regular season that he does in the playoffs. In his last 27 games of the regular season, he posted 22 hits on his way to 59 hits in 73 games. His career-high is 116 hits in 81 games in 2017-18 while with Toronto. In 15 playoff games, before getting injured, he had 109 hits. He has 344 career hits in 100 playoff games (3.44/g) compared to 776 hits in 642 career games (1.21/g).

Los Angeles Kings

Quinton Byfield (F) – In his last 32 games, Byfield led the Kings with 31 points (79-point pace). His expected GF% was 58.7, with 56.2 being the next best on the Kings during that time.

Kevin Fiala (F) – Fiala had 19 goals and 12 assists in his last 33 games (47-goal pace and 77-point pace). He had 105 shots on goal (3.18/g).

Andrei Kuzmenko (F) – Kuzmenko might have found a home in Los Angeles. He posted seven goals and 22 points in his last 29 games (62-point pace). He had seven of those points on the power play while playing 72.5% of the time there.

Brandt Clarke (D) – Clarke faded in his last 31 games, playing just 15:09 per game with nine points (24-point pace).

Minnesota Wild

Matt Boldy (F) – He had 28 points in his last 30 games (76-point pace), missing Kirill Kaprizov in the lineup for 26 of those games. No other player on Minnesota had more than 18 points over that stretch.

Brock Faber (D) – Faber's offense deserted him a little as he had just eight points in his last 30 games (22-point pace), and he was minus-15 over that period.

📢 advertisement:

Marco Rossi (F) – There might be valid concerns from the Wild on giving Rossi a big payday. In his last 30 games, he managed 14 points (47-point pace) and was minus-15. Other than Faber, the next-worst Wild player was minus eight.

Justin Brazeau (F) – Brazeau managed just one goal and one assist in his last 26 games, with 16 SOG and 42 hits, all while averaging just over nine minutes per game. I was hoping he had a little more potential than he showed.

Nashville Predators

Steven Stamkos (F) – Stamkos struggled in his first season with Nashville, but one always hopes that players will show something late to give hope for the following campaign. He had 10 goals and 10 assists in his last 32 games (26-goal and 26-assist pace). He had 66 SOG (2.06/g) and was a team worst minus-23.

Jonathan Marchessault (F) – He was the other big addition in the 2023-24 off-season and in his last 28 games put up six goals and 18 points (18-goal and 53-point pace). He had 52 SOG (1.86/g) and was a minus-18. Only Brady Skjei, at minus-20, was in the ballpark with Stamkos and Marchessault in that department.

Zachary L'Heureux (F) – He slowed down considerably over his last 20 games with just a goal and an assist. He did manage 64 hits (3.2/g). Fantasy owners are hoping he can contribute some offense with those hits.

San Jose Sharks

Macklin Celebrini (F) – Celebrini put up 26 points in his last 28 games (76-point pace) on 95 SOG (3.39G). His 48.2 percent in the faceoff circle was very advanced for most players his age.

Will Smith (F) – Smith had a good finish to the campaign with 10 goals and 13 assists in his last 28 games (29-goal and 38-assist pace).

Ty Dellandrea (F), Barclay Goodrow (F), and Zack Ostapchuk (F) – These three players combined for one goal and four assists in 74 games down the stretch. All three might be in danger of securing their places in the NHL in 2025-26. Goodrow has to be a buy-out candidate.

Seattle Kraken

Matty Beniers (F) – Beniers has six years at $7.14 million AAV remaining. He had nine goals and 14 points in his last 29 games (25-goal and 14-assist pace). It's too early to be concerned about the future production of Beniers, but he might prove to have a ceiling of 60-70 points down the road.

Ryker Evans (D) – Evans faded down the stretch. In his last 23 games, he had four assists, was minus-14 and played 18:07 per night after averaging over 20 minutes for most of the year.

St. Louis Blues

Robert Thomas (F) – Thomas led the Blues in his last 30 games with nine goals and 36 assists (123-point pace). He has a career-high of 86 points, which could be eclipsed in the next year or two.

Pavel Buchnevich (F) – In a year where Buchnevich finished with 20 goals and 57 points in 76 games, he had 26 points in his last 26 games, with just five of those points coming on the power play.

Zack Bolduc (F) – He had 14 goals and 21 points in his last 30 games (38-goal and 57-point pace). He did shoot 23.1% on 61 SOG and had six goals, with 10 of his points on the power play. It looks like that spot on the first unit will come down to Jake Neighbours or Bolduc or they might rotate the hot hand in 2025-26.

Cam Fowler (D) – Fowler had an impressive 23 points in his last 29 games (65-point pace). Only five of those points came on the power play. He fit in well with the Blues.

Dylan Holloway (F) – He had 25 points in his last 25 games, with five points coming with the man-advantage. He added 51 hits as well during that period.

Utah Mammoth

Logan Cooley (F) – Cooley had 10 goals and 12 assists in his final 25 games (33-goal and 72-point pace). He did shoot 21.3 percent, which would be hard to maintain for a full 82 games.

Kevin Stenlund (F) – Stenlund established career-highs with 14 goals and 28 points in 2024-25. In his last 31 games, he had seven goals and 16 points (42-point pace). He also led Utah with 264 faceoff wins during that stretch at a 58 percent winning rate.

Michael Kesselring (D) – I thought Kesselring had a bit of a breakout year in 2024-25 with 29 points in 82 games. He dipped to averaging 15:23 per game in his last 31 games, where he still put up 10 points.

Vancouver Canucks

Kiefer Sherwood (F) – Sherwood was pretty consistent all year, but in his last 31 games, he managed 19 points (50-point pace) and a whopping 189 hits. I'm not sure there is a way up from 19 goals, 21 assists and 462 hits.

Quinn Hughes (D) – Hughes was playing either injured or fatigued in his final 21 games, where he still managed to put up 17 points but was a team worst minus-13.

Pius Suter (F) – Suter led the Canucks with 12 goals in his last 31 games and added 11 assists (32-goal and 62-point pace). He finished with career-highs of 25 goals and 46 points. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

Conor Garland (F) – Garland appeared to run out of steam in the final 30 games, where he had just five goals and 16 points (44-point pace).

Brock Boeser (F) – Boeser potentially finished his last 31 games with the Canucks with nine goals and eight assists (24-goal and 20-assist pace) which was a disappointing end to his time there. 2024-25 was the first time he had averaged less than 2.0 shots per game, finishing at 1.9. In his last 31 games, he averaged 1.8.

Vegas Golden Knights

Pavel Dorofeyev (F) – Dorofeyev led the Golden Knights over his last 30 games with 13 goals (35-goal pace). He finished with 35 goals on the year.

Mark Stone (F) – We've had warning signs with Stone that he has been slowing down before, but he's always proved everyone wrong with a stellar playoff or over a point per game in the regular season. He finished with 67 points in 66 games, but in his last 28 games, he had just 21 points (61-point pace). He is 33 years old now, even though it seems like he is at least 38.

Brett Howden (F) – Howden set career-highs with 23 goals and 40 points in 80 games. In his last 29 games, he put up 18 points (52-point pace). Does he have another level of offense in him after never having more than 23 points in the six seasons prior?

Winnipeg Jets

Nikolaj Ehlers (F) – He might have been playing hurt down the stretch, as Ehlers put up just eight goals and eight assists in his final 25 games (26-goal and 26-assist pace). He's set to become an unrestricted free agent, and has a history of injuries and inconsistency, but he should be pretty wealthy on July 1st.
