After six days post-July 1st, we are going to look at players that teams in the West added or lost from their roster.
We are going to go back until the last few weeks of June to include any trades.
Today we are going to review Anaheim, Calgary, Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, Los Angeles and Minnesota.
Anaheim Ducks
Additions: Petr Mrazek – G, Ryan Poehling – F, Chris Kreider – F, Mikael Granlund – F
Subtractions: John Gibson – G, Trevor Zegras – F, Isac Lundestrom – F, Jansen Harkins – F
Kreider and Granlund should help the Ducks improve their top six, while Poehling should bolster their bottom-six forwards.
With John Gibson dealt, the goalie time should be split between Lukas Dostal, Mrazek and Ville Husso, with Dostal going as the 1A starter and Mrazek getting the next look in the crease with the Ducks.
Anaheim gave up on Zegras and traded him to Philadelphia for what I consider a pretty disappointing return which was Poehling, a 2nd round pick in 2025 and a 4th rounder in 2026. Zegras is still capable of putting up a point per game in the NHL at some point.
Calgary Flames
Additions: Ivan Prosvetov – G
Subtractions: Dan Vladar – G, Anthony Mantha – F
The Flames tinkered with their roster very little so far. They added Prosvetov as a potential backup goalie in place of Dan Vladar.
Mantha played just 13 games for the Flames in 2024-25, so shouldn't be a huge hole to fill for them.
It appears at the moment that the Flames will look to improve from within for 2025-26 and hope that Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee find their game.
Chicago Blackhawks
Additions: Sam Lafferty – F, Andre Burakovsky – F
Subtractions: Joe Veleno – F, Philipp Kurashev – F
Chicago was very quiet on the free agency front as they are perhaps a year or two away from seriously getting into playoff contention. They added Burakovsky in a trade with Seattle for Veleno, and he could score 20-25 goals in 2025-26. The addition of Lafferty is a fourth-line move at best.
Losing Veleno and Kurashev will just open up spots for some of their younger players to become regulars in 2025-26.
Colorado Avalanche
Additions: Brent Burns – D, Gavin Brindley – F
Subtractions: Charlie Coyle – F, Jonathan Drouin – F
If this were a few years ago, adding Brent Burns in free agency would have been a big deal. He still might be a very good add for Colorado at just $1 million AAV in 2025-26, but I don't think he is the player he was from a few years ago.
Brindley is perhaps a year or two away from competing for a regular NHL job.
Colorado will feel the absence of Coyle and Drouin in the lineup and will struggle to come even close to replacing either of them in the short-term.
Dallas Stars
Additions: None
Subtractions: Mason Marchment – F, Mikael Granlund – F, Cody Ceci – D, Evgenii Dadonov – F
The Stars went into the 2024-25 playoffs knowing that they wouldn't be able to roll-back a similar lineup in 2025-26. Their top-six forwards are going to be hit the hardest which gives an opportunity for Mavrik Bourque.
Ceci should be replaced from within quite handily.
Edmonton Oilers
Additions: Andrew Mangiapane – F, Curtis Lazar – F
Subtractions: Evander Kane – F, Viktor Arvidsson – F, Corey Perry – F, Connor Brown – F, John Klingberg – D
The Oilers needed to re-sign Evan Bouchard so it was no surprise that they moved Kane and Arvidsson to allow the cap space.
Signing Mangiapane is a low-risk addition for a former 35-goal scorer. He could reach 20-25 goals in Edmonton.
Lazar will bolster the fourth line and provide a physical presence.
Los Angeles Kings
Additions: Brian Dumoulin – D, Cody Ceci – D, Anton Forsberg – G, Corey Perry – F, Joel Armia – F
Subtractions: Jordan Spence – D, Tanner Jeannot – F, David Rittich – G
The Kings are one of the few Western teams who added heavily in free agency, especially on defense.
They added Dumoulin and Ceci while trading Spence. They are looking for Dumoulin and Ceci to eat up minutes and provide solid defensive play. That hasn't always happened for both in the past.
Los Angeles is thinking about the playoffs with adding Perry and Armia. Perry is 40-years of age and had 10 goals in 22 playoff games after producing 19 goals in 81 regular season games with Edmonton in 2024-25.
Armia could slot in on the third or fourth line.
Minnesota Wild
Additions: Nicolas Aube-Kubel – F, Nico Sturm – F, Vladimir Tarasenko – F
Subtractions: Declan Chisholm – D, Frederick Gaudreau – F, Marc-Andre Fleury – G
The Wild have some young players knocking on the door for 2025-26 with Zeev Buium and David Jiricek on defense, Liam Ohgren at forward and Jesper Wallstedt in goal.
Adding Tarasenko didn't cost the Wild any assets so he's a no-risk addition. Sturm and Aube-Kubel should help the fourth line and add some depth.
Minnesota will need to replace the versatile Gaudreau who was able to slide up and down between the second and fourth lines when needed.
Wallstedt has the door wide open for him with the retirement of Fleury.
The departure of Chisholm could open up a spot for Buium.
Next week, we will look at Nashville through to Winnipeg.
