Lining Up: Waiver Wire Heroes in Kreider, Bourque, Tarasenko and Geekie

Another week in the books and we are on to November! I personally can't believe how fast 2025 has gone and now we are only two months away from the new year.  The NHL has blessed us with a busy week as the lightest scheduled days have four games on them. The Frozen Frenzy the NHL put on last week was a cool concept with the staggered start times and every team playing, but it wreaked havoc on my fantasy teams. One anxiety I suffer from is seeing all the points that get left on my bench and what could have been, so while it was fun to watch, I was also a nervous mess.

We have five squads that have four games remaining in this fantasy week: Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and Utah Mammoth. If you can stream a player or two from these teams and get the most bang for your buck out of them (Minnesota and Utah have two games on what we consider light days) that could really give you an advantage in your matchup.

Anaheim Ducks – Chris Kreider missed a few games towards the end of October with an illness, but he has played in two straight games so he must be operating at 100%. Only rostered in 33% of Yahoo leagues, the left winger is averaging almost four minutes on the powerplay and three shots-per-game. The Ducks powerplay has improved immensely this year and he has been a key component of that success.

Three of the four opponents for Anaheim this week consist of teams in the bottom half of penalty killing for the season so this could be a nice week for the American winger to light the lamp.

Boston Bruins – An MRI revealed that Elias Lindholm will be week-to-week after a collision with Buffalo Sabres forward Jordan Greenway over the weekend. In their first game without the Swedish center, the B's moved Morgan Geekie up to play with David Pastrnak and Marat Khusnutdinov.

There isn't a forward more deserving of the promotion, as Geekie has nine goals in 14 games played thus far. His teammate and one of the league's best goal scorers, Pastrnak, has said that Geekie "has everything to score 50 in this league." At his current pace, he is projected to score over 50 for this season. He actually has the most goals scored by anyone in the regular season since January 12, 2025. If the Canadian winger is somehow still available in your league (20% un-owned in Fantrax and 32% on the wire in Yahoo), please scoop him up.

Dallas Stars – The Stars are another squad that has four games for the remainder of this fantasy week. You may be able to find some top six minutes available on your waiver wire as Dallas currently has injuries to Matt Duchene and Roope Hintz.

Sam Steel and Mavrik Bourque are lining up with Tyler Seguin, and both are receiving a little bit of second unit time on the man advantage. Both Steel and Bourque are under 1% owned in Yahoo leagues and would be great fillers for some spot starts this week. They are both former first round picks selected at the 30 spot and were major offensive contributors to their respective junior clubs.

Steel is more of a fill-in at this point in his career as he has developed a reputation as a solid bottom-six defensive center. This is Bourque's first opportunity for big minutes so he could really force himself into more ice time if he takes advantage of this opportunity. He would be my claim and stash player, even after the four games this week, because Dallas will most likely have their top line head to the Olympics in February so for the remainder of the regular season they could lean on some of their younger players.

Minnesota Wild – We previously mentioned Vladimir Tarasenko as a waiver option because the only skater receiving consistent top power play time on this squad that is not named Kirill Kaprizov or Matt Boldy has been the Tarasenk-show. He tallied a goal with the man advantage last game against the Vancouver Canucks and is playing at even strength with Boldy and Joel Eriksson-Ek. The Russian winger is only rostered in 6% of Yahoo leagues and having that RW eligibility could add some nice depth to your fantasy squad.

Utah Mammoth – The Mammoth are one team that I have not focused much time on this season, but they are building one heck of a club. After signing Logan Cooley to a monster extension last week that does not kick in until the end of this season, they have their kid line (Cooley, Dylan Guenther, and JJ Peterka) locked in for a while. Cooley leads this team in goals and he and Guenther have 12 points apiece, while Peterka has 10.

The trade that brought Peterka over from the Buffalo Sabres looks to have worked out for both sides thus far, with him having found some chemistry with these two young bucks in Utah. They are also another team that has four games remaining this week so look to stream one of them if they are sitting on your waiver wire.
