Good morning, good afternoon, good evening everyone. Welcome back to the Injury Ward. My name is Logan Clarkson and every Wednesday and Sunday I will be chauffeuring you through injury news and updates from around the NHL. I'll do my best to offer useful analysis and opinion as it relates to fantasy throughout. As always, I’d like to thank every single one of you for reading. Now, on to the bad (and some good) news.
Adam Fox / New York Rangers – Fox (upper body) left Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Lightning after sustaining an injury, per Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic. Fox has rebounded this season from a down year along with the rest of his teammates last season where he had a measly (just kidding) 61 points in 74 games. Still good numbers for a defenseman, but getting back to a near point-per-game pace with a recent hot streak (10 points in six games) has helped him from looking poised to repeat another stinker of a year.
Fox was crushed into the end boards shoulder first by Brandon Hagel, and it looked like separated shoulder territory. It could be a few weeks before we see him back, but that’s pure speculation and we will have to wait for a real diagnosis from the team. I’d have to think the Rangers may be in for a bit of a limp stretch here, without his services in the near future. Look for a possible five-forward power-play unit over having Braden Schneider QB considering Fox had 81 percent of the power-play time, unless things go south fast for them.
Logan Cooley / Utah Mammoth – Cooley exited Saturday’s game versus the Blues after a knee-on-knee collision. Pure crap timing for Utah and Cooley, as he had seven points in the three games going into last night before he needed help leaving the ice after a knee-on-knee hit from Alexey Toropchenko. Cooley has put up good enough numbers to lead the team in points at 23 in 26 games played, and that’s without a power-play point in his last 17 games.
Head coach Andre Tourigny did not have an update on Logan after the game, but Andy Strickland is reporting that Cooley avoided serious injury and may simply have a painful charley horse. Hopefully that's all this is.
Matthew Tkachuk / Florida Panthers – Tkachuk (groin) has resumed skating, Jameson Olive of the Panthers’ official site reports Wednesday. Tkachuk has missed every game of the season so far since limping across the finish line in the finals last year and then capping it off with what I can only assume was a two-month bender to celebrate the Panthers' second Stanley Cup in two seasons.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson / Toronto Maple Leafs – Ekman-Larsson sustained an upper-body injury late in Saturday’s game versus the Penguins, David Alter of The Hockey News reports. Scary news for the Leafs, who have just started to score some goals with OEL in the quarterback spot on the top power play. Oliver had a multipoint effort on Saturday before leaving the game. William Nylander said to Mark Masters of TSN after the game that Ekman-Larsson told him he’s fine, so do with that what you will. OEL has been found money on waivers for owners this year, with 10 points in his last nine games, contributing to his best point-per-game pace in his career so far of 66 in a full season, even though the season is still relatively young.
Conor Garland / Vancouver Canucks – Garland (upper body) was held out of the lineup against the Kings on Saturday. Garland has now been injured on three separate occasions this season but has only missed five games due to it. Garland has only missed two games in the last three seasons before this year, and seven in the last four which surprised me considering he’s a bit of a pest out on the ice. He’s receiving more power-play time than he’s ever seen due to Vancouver having a pretty thin stable of skill.
Kirill Marchenko / Columbus Blue Jackets – Marchenko (upper body) has been skating on his own, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports Saturday. The Blue Jackets have had an issue holding leads this year, and are second to last in regulation wins over the month of November with only two. Only scoring five power play goals in the whole month probably didn’t help much. As mentioned in last week’s Injury Ward, Marchenko has seen an increase across the board in rate stats and may continue to do so, becoming over a point per game player with a bit of help from blossoming linemates. I am high on the player.
David Pastrnak / Boston Bruins – Pastrnak (undisclosed) missed Saturday’s home tilt against Detroit. Although Pasta has been a shade under his 100+ point paces from the last three seasons, he’s still looking at 95 of them over a full season at his current clip. Boston has had Morgan Geekie step up significantly in his first big minutes and he’s tied for the league lead in goals, which is welcome after losing some offense at the deadline last season. David's shots per game are down to 3.40 which follows the trend of the last three years, falling from his career high of a ridiculous 4.96. Before the season began, it was said that Pastrnak was going to be dealing with a nagging issue possibly all season. Following comments like that, I’m surprised this is the first time he’s been out of the lineup. It’s not certain that this is even the same injury though, to be fair.
Charlie McAvoy / Boston Bruins – McAvoy (face) skated on his own before Saturday’s practice, Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald reports. McAvoy recently posted a photo with his wife and son, giving thanks to fans for the well wishes after a scary post about his son needing attention alongside Charlie’s facial surgery. He looked pretty good for a guy who took a laser to the face a week before, I have to admit. I’m glad the family is happy and healthy, and that’s far bigger than any game.
Lukas Dostal / Anaheim Ducks – Dostal (upper body) is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks, the team announced Friday. Petr Mrazek will step into the starting role in the meantime, though I’m not rushing to pick him up with his .880 save percentage and three wins in six games played. Ville Husso will see some starts as well. Dostal had been on fire lately, winning nine of his last 11 starts and firing off eight quality starts during the stretch. I love watching him play, he’s very acrobatic and I have tried to make a point to check him out in a game at least once every few weeks.
Jack Roslovic / Edmonton Oilers – Roslovic (undisclosed) is expected to be out of the lineup for at least a couple of weeks, Tony Brar of Oilers TV reports Friday. Roslovic leaves the lineup as the hottest player in it for the Oilers lately. After a bit of a fudge up by his agent in the offseason which potentially lost him quite a sum of money, he only had one assist in his first seven games in Edmonton. Since then, he has 17 points in 16 games, and found himself potting some goals on the top power play before Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins both returned. It’s possible he gets back on there when he’s healthy, but that unit has been together without him for years.
