Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening! Welcome back to the Injury Ward. My name is Logan Clarkson and every Wednesday and Sunday I will be taking you through injury news and updates from around the NHL. I'll do my best to offer useful analysis and opinion as it relates to fantasy throughout. At the end of the article is the Quarantine section, where any players out due to illness will be listed. As always, I’d like to thank every single one of you for reading. So, on to the bad (and some good) news.
Injuries / Leaves
Mikko Rantanen / Dallas Stars – Rantanen (lower body) will probably be out for more than two weeks, per Robert Tiffin of D Magazine on Friday. Unfortunate news for the Stars. Rantanen has only missed two other games for Dallas this season, and he's been one of their best if not their best player. Not a big surprise there, but he’s nearly matching his career best point pace of 1.30 PTS/G, currently at a 1.28. If you have him in a bangers league, he even rewarded you quite heavily in mid-November, racking up 39 penalty minutes in three games.
Tyler Seguin / Dallas Stars – Seguin (knee) will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign and the entirety of the playoffs, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports Thursday. Seguin's season will end with only 27 games played. He played 20 last year, which is even less. He's played in 16 seasons in the NHL and we're left to wonder if we may have seen the last of Tyler in the big show. He has one more year left on his eight-year contract with a cap hit of $9.85 million. He's only 34 years old this season, but the man has been fed through the wood chipper multiple times, having had surgery on his hip, ACL, and some Achilles issues.
Troy Terry / Anaheim Ducks – Terry (upper body) has now missed four of the last seven Ducks games. Despite that, he has ten points in his last eight games played, and continues to pace for nearly a point per game, toasting his career best of 0.89 PTS/G. He's also seen a bigger role on special teams this season on the penalty kill and has cashed in four shorthanded points while doing so. The penalty kill is making up for losing a little bit of time at even strength with the team heavily incorporating players like Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier this year.
Mikael Granlund / Anaheim Ducks – Granlund (upper body) has now missed two games in a row, and he was already out for 13 games from October 28 – November 22. He actually managed to play in 83 games last season due to being traded at the deadline to a team with less GP to date. He's down a little bit nearly across the board for rate stats due to a slightly diminished role, but has actually seen an increase in powerplay time at 64.4%, and only has six PPP to show for it so far. On pace for 60 points over an 82-game season, this hidden gem may have lost most of his lustre moving away from San Jose.
Robert Thomas / St. Louis Blues – Thomas will return to the Blues' lineup on Sunday after taking a personal leave of absence from the team. Previous to that, Thomas was out since mid-January with a leg injury. Thomas' struggles this year have been no secret. With the rumors of trades coming out of St. Louis, some of their big players may be on their way out, and that certainly won't help things along unless Thomas is one of the guys to go. Thomas has informed the team that he is ready to be traded, and the Blues' organization has also now said that he will be traded before the deadline. Greener grass for him before fantasy playoff time, possibly.
John Carlson / Washington Capitals – Carlson (lower body) has now missed three games in a row, but head coach Spencer Carbery says that he's not concerned about it turning into a long-term thing. Carlson has been practicing on his own. John has been turning back the clock this season, torching his last three seasons totals with 0.84 PTS/G. He's shooting 8.7% so far, but hasn't been shooting more than normal. His pairing with Slovakian Olympian Martin Fehervary has been working quite well for the pair, sporting a +17 so far throughout their roughly 510 minutes on ice together so far. Carlson and Chychrun have better fancy stats together in 250 minutes together, but have seen varying results coming in at just a minus-2 in that time.
Andrei Kuzmenko / Los Angeles Kings – Kuzmenko underwent knee surgery for a torn meniscus and is on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday. If I told you that Kuzmenko's first season in the NHL in Vancouver produced 73 points, would you believe me at this point? I'm staring at it now and I can hardly believe it myself. Falling in PTS/G every year, he now finds himself struggling to keep up a half point per game pace. With 14:55 TOI/G, he's just not a dynamic enough player to be serviceable in fantasy at even strength. On the power play, where he receives nearly 61% of ice time up until now, he's made up just over half of his worth, scoring 13 points with the man advantage. He most likely would have lost his time to Artemi Panarin anyway had he not gone down with surgery.
Quarantine
Roope Hintz / DAL, Ryan Strome / ANA
