Fantasy Take: Seattle Kraken Bolster Scoring by Adding McMann

The Seattle Kraken were reportedly linked to a few key names at the Trade Deadline, and they managed to get one of the top scoring wingers available as the acquired Bobby McMann from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a second-round and a fourth-round pick, per Nick Kypreos. McMann averaged 23 goals every 82 games across the last three seasons with Toronto, doing that while skating under 14 minutes a game with secondary power-play time.

Let's break it down.

What Seattle Gets

As mentioned, McMann had been able to score at a very good clip for the limited ice time and power-play time he skated. In fact, over the last three seasons, his 0.99 goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 is a top-50 rate among regular forwards, and in line with names like Wyatt Johnston, Jake Guentzel, and Alex DeBrincat. He had 20 goals in 74 games last season and needs one more this season to reach the 20-goal plateau again.

McMann is also a big, physical presence. He is listed at 6'2 and 217 lbs. but he certainly looks bigger than that when he’s on the ice. He has averaged 168 hits every 82 games over the last three years, or over two per game. Being able to average 23 goals and 168 hits every 82 games across three seasons while skating under 14 minutes a game is very, very good multi-cat production.

The question is what McMann can do in Seattle. The Kraken have a top line they seem to like with Jordan Eberle, Matty Beniers, and Jared McCann. It is possible McMann skates some with the top line, but he seems more likely to line up next to Chandler Stephenson and Eeli Tolvanen. They have been a consistent duo this year but have rotated that third forward frequently. Skating on the second or third line with secondary PP duties likely means 15 minutes per game, or more, for McMann. He skated 15:19 with Toronto this season, so it seems fairly status quo.

Going to Seattle seems like mostly a lateral move for McMann. They are a worse offensive team than the Leafs, but he could easily see his PPTOI per game double (it was 48 seconds a game with the Leafs and even the secondary PP guys in Seattle skate 1:30-1:45 per game). That additional PPTOI can help offset the decline in team offensive quality. Maybe not make up for it completely, but it helps.

This trade is good news for Toronto's secondary offensive options like Matias Maccelli, Easton Cowan, and Nicholas Robertson. Now that both McMann, Scott Laughton, and Nicolas Roy are gone, there's no reason why the coaching staff should healthy scratch any of them, and not play them in middle-6 roles consistently.

This trade is not good news for Berkly Catton. I am just spitballing here, but the new Kraken lineup could look something like this:

McCann – Beniers – Eberle

McMann – Stephenson – Tolvanen

Schwartz – Wright – Kakko

That leaves Catton out in the cold and on fourth line duties. He probably won't stay there for the rest of the season, but it's not looking great. Ditto for Ryan Winterton and Frederick Gaudreau.
