Ramblings: Updates on Stone, Sergachev, Larkin, Matthews, and Reinhart; Knies and Nylander Stuff Stat Sheet; Eklund Goal of the Year – March 13

The Calgary Flames have signed forward Tyson Gross, per Eric Francis. The 23-year-old college free agent can report to the team as soon as he's able, so we'll see what the timeline is like soon. His Dobber Prospects profile can be read here.

Mikhail Sergachev was back in the lineup for the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night after missing four games with a lower-body injury. He was back in his usual spot on the top power play unit and was paired with MacKenzie Weegar at even strength.

*

We got an update on Detroit forwards Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp, and the update is both not that bad and also very bad at the same time:

Detroit went into Thursday night's action three points back of Montreal and Tampa Bay in the Atlantic, and only three points ahead of Columbus from being knocked out of a playoff spot. Detroit's top two centres missing two weeks of action when there are only five weeks remaining in a playoff race this tight is not what Detroit fans wanted to see right now.

In their game on Thursday in Tampa Bay, the Red Wings' top PP unit consisted of Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, and J.T. Compher. Compher was also centering DeBrincat and Kane at even strength.

The Lightning won that game 4-1 as Darren Raddysh returned to the lineup for the Bolts. He was also back on the top PP unit and skated over 24 minutes in ice time.

Both Jake Guentzel and Gage Goncalves had a pair of goals on five shots for the Lightning. That leaves Guentzel one goal short of 30 on the campaign, which would be his fifth straight season with at least 30 goals.

Andrei Vasilevskiy was stellar for the Lightning, stopping 24 of 25 shots for his 30th win. That makes nine straight seasons with at least 30 wins for Vasilevskiy, including the COVID shortened season where he made just 42 starts.

*

Sam Reinhart was back in the lineup for Florida on Thursday night after missing a pair of games with what was deemed a soft-tissue injury. On the flipside, both Carter Verhaeghe and Anton Lundell were out of the lineup, so the injury news really didn't get a whole lot better for the Panthers.

Reinhart wasted no time in making an impact as he assisted a third-period Sam Bennett power play goal, and then scored the overtime winner as the Panthers took a 2-1 win at home to Columbus. That was just the seventh multi-point game of the season for Reinhart, who had 21 such games last year.

Sergei Bobrovsky was great in net for Florida, stopping 30 of 31 shots.

Mark Stone returned to action for the Vegas Golden Knights, resuming his typical top line duties. He had missed five games with an upper-body injury.

*

Auston Matthews was injured in Toronto's 6-4 home win over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night. He took a knee-on-knee hit from Radko Gudas, left the game, and did not return. We are awaiting further updates from the team but let's hope it's nothing too serious.

Matthew Knies had a goal and three assists in the win while Matias Maccelli and William Nylander each registered a goal and two assists. For Maccelli, he now has 11 points in his last 10 games going back to February 1st. I wrote a bit about Maccelli earlier this week and his stellar season thus far.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson took over top power-play duties for Morgan Rielly in this game and the Leafs went 3-for-8 with the man advantage. It is safe to say that OEL will have some run on the top PP unit for now.

Pavel Mintyukov scored a goal for the Ducks in the loss, registering five shots and three blocks. He now has 91 blocks in 60 games on the campaign and his two blocks shy of setting a career-high mark.

*

A late third-period goal from Jakob Chychrun lifted the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 win on the road in Buffalo. Charlie Lindgren was great in net for the Caps, stopping 29 of 30 shots in possibly his best start since the very first game of the season (a 35-save shutout).

Chychrun also had a block to go with his goal, and that gives him 90 blocks on the year. He had 87 blocks in 74 games last season so he's been a bit more productive on the peripheral front, which is a big bonus considering all the goals and shots he's managed.

*

San Jose took a 4-2 win in Boston on Thursday and the win was a big two points for the team but the clear talking point was this goal from William Eklund, which is not only a goal of the year candidate, but one of the best goals you'll ever see at the NHL level:

The deke to get a shot is one thing, but batting the puck out of mid-air as you're turning and falling is something else entirely. That is unbelievable.

Eklund had a nice assist on a Michael Misa goal in the first period, too, and the pair of points give Eklund 40 points for the third straight season.

Alex Nedeljkovic also had a big game for the Sharks, stopping 39 of 41 shots for his 12th win. It is the third time in 11 starts in calendar 2026 that he had to make at least 35 saves in a game.

All of Eklund, Misa, and Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist in the game. That has been a nice scoring line for the Sharks to support the Macklin Celebrini/Will Smith top-line duo.

San Jose also scored a power-play goal in this game, and if I'm not mistaken, that makes three goals at 5-on-4 in six games since Dmitry Orlov took over the top unit, or one fewer than the top PP unit had with John Klingberg running it in December, January, and February combined.

*

Jimmy Snuggerud scored two goals in the final five minutes of the third period to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 win in Carolina. That gives him 15 goals on the season, and 19 points in his last 14 games. That is quite the hot streak and he's shown excellent chemistry with Robert Thomas since the Olympic break. Snuggerud even skated over 20 minutes in the game, the third time he's reached that mark in the 14-game streak.

Speaking of the Olympics, Jordan Binnington was stellar in net for the Blues, stopping 31 of 32 shots faced for just his third win (in the NHL) in 2026.

*

A third-period goal from Mikael Backlund held up as the game-winner as the Calgary Flames took a 5-4 win in New Jersey. Both Luke Hughes and Jack Hughes had a goal and an assist in the loss, and Jack now has 11 points and 29 shots in 8 games since returning from his gold medal-winning performance at the Olympics.

Kevin Bahl scored for Calgary and totaled two shots, two blocks, and two hits as well. He skated 27:33 in this game and is has averaged over 24 minutes a game in the four games since the Trade Deadline (none of those games went past regulation, either). It is a lot of ice time to rack up peripherals.

*

The Dallas Stars put an absolute beatdown on the Edmonton Oilers 7-2. Jason Robertson had two goals and two assists, Wyatt Johnston had 1+2, Jamie Benn tallied twice, Matt Duchene and Sam Steel had one of each, and Miro Heiskanen managed a trio of helpers in the win.

Both Robertson and Johnston are now 1 of 6 players in the league with at least 35 goals and 35 assists.

Evan Bouchard scored for the Oilers, totaled six shots, and put up a block. He is now one goal shy of his first career 20-goal season.

Tristan Jarry was in net for all seven goals.

*

In yesterday's Ramblings, I wrote about the season of Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Emil Andrae. Thursday night, he scored for the Flyers as they earned a 3-2 shootout win in Minnesota. Owen Tippett also scored for the Flyers, totaling six shots, a block, and three hits. He needs two more assists for his third straight 20-20 season with his usual high rates of shots and blocks.

*

The New York Rangers filled the net yet again, this time putting up six goals on the Winnipeg Jets in a 6-3 win. Tye Kartye and Gabe Perreault each managed a goal and an assist while Adam Fox scored his fifth goal of the season. Fox now sits with 0.84 points per game, which is higher than his rate last year (0.82) despite the Rangers scoring 10% fewer goals per minute.

Alexis Lafreniere scored again and going back to the end of January, he has 9 goals and 13 points in his last 10 games. He had 10 goals in his first 55 games of the season.

Connor Hellebuyck was in net for five goals on 16 shots. His save percentage has fallen below .900 for the season (.899).

*

Spencer Knight returned from his illness absence, started Thursday night in Utah, stopped 29 of 31 shots, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Utah 3-2 in overtime. Knight now has a .909 save percentage on the season which is seventh in the league among goalies with at least 30 starts. Doing that on a below-average defensive team is a pretty good season from Knight.

Frank Nazar, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Connor Bedard each had a goal and an assist in the win. That makes a five-game point streak for Nazar, accumulating three goals and five assists in that span. He is another player I wrote about recently.

*

Marco Rossi had his best game in a Vancouver uniform with a goal and two assists as the Canucks beat Nashville 4-3 in a shootout. Rossi added four PIMs for a bit of multi-cat value. That makes six points in the last five games for Rossi so hopefully he's starting to find a bit of chemistry with his new team. He needs to be a top-6 centre for the franchise.

Filip Hronek had a goal, an assist, three blocks, and a hit in the win. That makes 20 points, 40 blocks, and 49 hits in 33 games for Hronek since the Quinn Hughes trade. Over an 82-game season, that works out to 50 points, 99 blocks, and 122 hits.

*

In Stone's return, Vegas put the wood to Pittsburgh by a 6-2 margin. The Penguins were due for a big loss given the injuries to their lineup, but had hung tough over their last few games. This was going to happen eventually, though.

Pavel Dorofeyev posted two goals and an assist while each of Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner posted a goal and an assist. Over the last three seasons, Dorofeyev's 1.53 goals per 60 minutes ranks 10th in the league, ahead of names like David Pastrnak (1.51) and Nathan MacKinnon (1.5).

Stone skated 17:52 and was back on the top PP unit, as expected.

Adin Hill stopped 24 of 26 shots in the win. It was his third straight start for Vegas, the first time any Vegas goalie has made three straight starts since Carter Hart in December.

*

Nathan MacKinnon posted a goal, three assists, and four shots as Colorado beat Seattle 5-1. Martin Necas had one of each while Nazem Kadri also scored. In three games with the Avs, Kadri has a goal, an assist, eight shots, three blocks, five hits, and as averaged over 21 minutes a game in TOI.

Scott Wedgewood stopped 28 of 29 shots for his 25th win of the season in his 35th start.

MacKinnon is now two points behind Connor McDavid for tops in the league in scoring and Colorado has two more games remaining than Edmonton.
