DFS Tuesday: Frozen Frenzy Featuring Elite Oilers Top Line, Boston on the Road, LaCombe’s Opportunity, and More

Good day, all! Is your favorite NHL team playing today? The answer to that would be yes, which is a fun concept but makes tonight's daily fantasy a little tricky. I can almost guarantee, unless there is a team tonight that fills the net, that the winning lineup in tournaments could be a very strange build. For this week's DFS Tuesday with all but six clubs included on the DraftKings featured slate, what else would we expect?

That said, this slate does offer us plenty of cheaper filler lines that we can mix and match with expensive stacks. I won't go into great depth (no pun intended) on some of these but some lines that make for good filler stacks are – in no order, the Pittsburgh third line, the Seattle third line, the St.Louis second line even though I wouldn't consider them a true filler but parts of this line are priced as such, and finally the Calgary top line. Don't laugh, Calgary and Anaheim went to OT in three of the four matchups last season.

Slate Preview

Tampa Bay Lightning

This play is more about attacking the Rangers than anything else, with Igor Shesterkin now sidelined for the season. As much as that really stinks, I'll look at Tampa Bay in this matchup against an unproven goaltender.

For me, this build would look something like Brandon Hagel, Nikita Kucherov, plus John Carlson and go from there. While the forwards don't have correlation at even strength, Hagel has gotten a point in every contest so far in the early going, and Nikita Kucherov is simply never a bad play on any night. The Rangers have taken a good amount of penalties as well to open the season, which is where Kucherov can do the most damage, like he did last season.

If I were to pick a line to stack, I'd lean the Anthony Cirelli line, but again for me this would be more of a mix and match build in single entry. In multiple if you were to stack the second line, you could also play any of the fillers that I mentioned or parts of Utah or Los Angeles if you wanted to punt on defensemen.

Edmonton Oilers

Yes, the Oilers are going to be a popular play because well, it's Edmonton. This is also an Oilers club that has played well against the Kings in the past three seasons. Still, I like this top line a fair bit tonight and thinking this could be my spend up build if I decide to play in a three or five max entry tournament tonight.

The Connor McDavid top line should skate together at all strengths, with Vasily Podkolzin and Leon Draisaitl – this trio has been fantastic to start the season with McDavid and Podkolzin getting on the scoresheet in every game so far this season. I'll go ahead and add one more Oiler to this stack that has also gotten on the sheet in every game so far with Evan Bouchard and make this Oiler stack a pricey 4-3-1 build.

Again, there's plenty of cheaper lines I can throw in with an Edmonton top stack, so much so if you wanted to anchor Edmonton one in multiple entry and pair them with a variety of cheaper stacks, I think plays here tonight. At the end of the day, this is a top three line in hockey in a good matchup going against the Kings defense.

Boston Bruins

With almost every club in play tonight, all the big dog lines will be popular plays. This is where I feel like Boston where get overlooked in a decent road matchup against San Jose.

It does worry me a little that Alex Nedeljkovic has been solid so far sitting second in goals saved above expected and Save % above expected, but if the Boston top line can get a goal plus a couple of assists, then you might be able to jump up in tournaments. I'm only considering the top line for the Bruins if the line construction includes Pavel Zacha at center with Morgan Geekie on the leftwing across from David Pastrnak, as that's I believe the best iteration of the top group.

If you wanted to drop down to the second line of Marat Khusnutdinov – Fraser Minten – JJ Peterka, I don't mind that play either as the second line for Boston is top five in xGoals for per 60 at even strength. There would not be the power play correlation that you would get with the top line, but it is worth pointing out that the second line can be rostered tonight as well.

Defense

For the expensive defensemen, I'll go right to the top for Evan Bouchard if I'm building with the Oilers or have the salary to do so. While I think Quinn Hughes at $6,700 is more of a play with a Wild stack than as a one-off, he does make for a good start tonight and will still see plenty of ice time even on a back-to-back. My last spend up would be Roman Josi, who is always in consideration for me priced at $6,200 tonight.

In the middle-tier pricing I love Jackson LaCombe at $5,700 and do think he gets priced higher throughout the season. He is in a favorable matchup tonight and will get the ice time at all strengths. I typically don't roster Penguins, but in a matchup against the Blackhawks, it's hard not to consider Erik Karlsson at $5K

There's going to be a lot of folks playing expensive builds tonight which means we need some solid cheaper defensemen to roster. Jared Spurgeon at $3,600 has been playing well to start the season, and I also like his teammate Jonas Brodin at $3,100 as well. Dylan Samberg may see a minutes bump if Josh Morrissey is out for Winnipeg tonight, and that could be terrific value at just $3,500. If you need even more salary relief, then I would look at Jamie Oleksiak sitting down at $2,800. He's always live for the block bonus and does contribute some offensively as well with three points on the season.

Goalies

I just know that my builds are going to be expensive which is difficult because some of the goaltenders that I like are the ones in the higher priced range. Ilya Sorokin at the top at $8,500 is in a great matchup versus the Canucks, and I'd think of the $8,500 is paying for the win.

Jake Oettinger has been excellent to start the season and while hosting the Avalanche is a tougher matchup, I do think he gets overlooked tonight because of that. I can see myself rostering him at $7,600 for just that reason. If there's ever going to be a time for the Flyers to get right it's going to be tonight on home ice against the Kraken, and unless the fans start to turn on this club early (this could absolutely happen in south Philly), Joseph Woll could be playable at $7,500.

My floor today is Juuse Saros priced down at $7,200. If I'm spending down in net, then I'm looking for goaltenders who will see good volume and Saros is in line for that tonight going up against the Golden Knights.

That's it for now — best of luck tonight!
