Lining Up: New-Look Kings Power Play; Gridin and Farabee Heating Up in Calgary; Streaming Cates and McDonald, and More

Happy Tuesday y'all! I hope you're having a good start to your seasons. I don't know how I have done it, but I am off to an 0-0-3 start. That is right, three ties. Is that impressive or embarrassing? Let me know what you think. Anyway, let's jump into it.

Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch reported that Denton Mateychuk practiced on the top power-play unit while Zack Werenski was quarterbacking the second group yesterday. Something to keep an eye on if Mateychuk does get that usage during the actual games, potentially hinting at a future-less Werenski? Or maybe the coaching staff just wants to mix things up as their current run has them at only an 11.5% conversion rate with the extra man thus far.

More power-play changes, this time with the Los Angeles Kings. The team played with Erik Gustafsson on the point for their top extra man unit on Monday night while Brandt Clarke was down with the second team.

Coming from Zach Dooley of Kings insider, "It's just giving it a different look, give it a lefty up top and see if that does anything," Laviolette said. "It's just again, it's the same thing. It's got to generate more."

The Kings have only scored one power-play goal in their last five games, so the coaching staff wants to switch up the look from the point. I can't see this change being in effect for very long, this just seems like a wake-up call.

And of course, what happens, the Kings win 6-3 last night and the wake-up call worked. The power-play scores early in the second period and Gustafsson registered the primary assist. Clarke also scored a goal at even strength so it's safe to say this deployment will probably last at least a week or two. L.A. plays on all the busy days this week so it may be tough to stream Gustafsson in fantasy, but the defenseman could be a sneaky play for DFS.

We have seven teams with multiple light scheduled games and I can't believe I'm suggesting this, but I am looking at the Calgary Flames. This team has been on an absolute heater lately and they have the Battle of Alberta on Wednesday and then a home contest against the Seattle Kraken on Friday. Matvei Gridin is only 4% owned in Yahoo leagues and has five points, two power-play goals, and nine shots in his last two games. Funny enough, both the Oilers and Kraken are tied for 25th on the penalty kill, so hopefully the Russian winger can keep that streak alive.

Another Flame I am looking at is Joel Farabee. At only 13% ownership on Yahoo, the former Flyer is on a five-game point streak, registering four points with the extra man during that time frame with a total of eight points. The former first rounder is only 26 years old, so he is one to stream this week and potentially keep on your roster if he has another good week.

If you're in deeper leagues, one skater I like as a streamer this week is Noah Cates. The center has been in between Matvei Michkov and Porter Martone recently and those two youngsters have looked like they have found their game. I'm banking on Cates getting a residual assist or two here on these lighter game nights.

If you're in a banger league and need a defenseman, I like the potential of Hunter McDonald from the Flyers. The defender is the definition of a broad street bully, with fights in back-to-back games and registering 13 hits in three outings. Rasmus Ristolainen is out for the week so McDonald will stay in the line up for the time being.

One final streamer I am looking at comes from the Seattle Kraken: 2024 first round pick Berkly Catton. In the midst of a four-game, five-point streak, the Canadian is gaining more and more power-play time as the season moves along. With no Jared McCann in the lineup, the young winger has stepped up and seized his opportunity to establish himself as an offensive threat for the Kraken.
